Does anyone else on here think that david gray is one of the best singer songwriters right now and quite honestly ever? I just got life in slow motion and i think it's a great cd along with all his other ones....

My friend went to see him play recently, and I asked him sarcasticly to call me when DG plays "Goodbye My Lover."
He didnt think it was too funny.

I only know a few songs that I've heard on the radio, but he sounds okay to me. My friend is obsessed with him, and for the most part we have very similar tastes in music, so next time I see her I might ask to borrow one of his CD's or something.

I actually don't see why everyone hates James Blunt so much, i think a couple of his songs are quite enjoyable...
Of course, he is no Elliott Smith, but that is far from an insult... Motzart was no Elliott Smith... David Gray is probably my second favorite musician, next too Elliott. David has produced many brilliant tracks, and is one of the few artists where you can enjoy a whole album... David Gray also seems to have held true to his song writing style. I own all of his albums, and towards the current point of his career, he has not tryed to produce some song that will burst into pop-culture. Yet each album has somthing unique to offer... Say Hello Wave Goodbye is a masterpiece, its brilliant. One of my favorite songs of all time, and i think most people on this website would likley agree that it is atleast a good song, even those that are not David Gray fans. Again, its always hard to discuss Any musician being good on an Elliott Smith forum, because comparing anyone to Elliott Smith is going to make them sub-par. I will agree that Coldplay is not overly wonderful by any strech of the imagination. But, i will admit they have had a song or two that has captured my attention. Johnette Napolitano & Danny Lohner remade a song of Coldplays called The Scientist, and they did a brilliant job of it. Really quite wonderful. I strongly suggest people check that song out, its really moving, makes you want to cry. I believe it was featured on the Wicker Park soundtrack, even if you feel the film was far from somthing you enjoyed, or would enjoy, i believe the song is worth a listen. |

*waits for some obsessed fan to make a three page rant about how Elliott Smith was more talanted than Motzart.

No he definitely couldn't have made a song like Angeles, but I still think he's really good. I own most of his albums, but I've gotta say White Ladder is by miles the best album.

I think he's quite good. Some of his songs aren't the best, but most from the album are fairly excellent i'd say. A lot of people slate him for his voice and others for his lyrics ... but i'm fairly sure some just don't like him because he gets a lot of coverage on the radio blah blah blah. Which is sad. Quote:

At age 10 mozart was better at writing music than I, or anyone else on this board will ever be at anything our whole lives.

i don't think he's an extraordinary talent, maybe plays the bob dylan card a little too often, but writes decent enough songs - having said that - it's a shame that his best and best recognised choon is a cover, however prettily done.

These lyrics..... are shit.
I can't stand to fly I'm not that naive I'm just out to find The better part of me I'm more than a bird I'm more than a plane I'm more than some pretty face beside a train And it's not easy to be... me I wish that I could cry Fall upon my knees Find a way to lie 'bout a home I'll never see It may sound absurd But dont be naive Even heroes have the right to bleed I may be disturbed But wont you concede Even heroes have the right to dream And its not easy to be... me Up, up and away, away from me Well its alright You can all sleep sound tonight I'm not crazy ... or anything I can't stand to fly I'm not that naive Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees I'm only a man In a silly red sheet Digging for Kryptonite On this one way street Only a man in a funny red sheet Looking for special things Inside of me Inside of me..heee Inside of me..heee Inside of me..heee Inside of me I'm only a man In a funny red sheet I'm only a man looking for a dream I'm only a man In a funny red sheet mmm Its not easy ooo ooo ooo It's not easy... To be............. Me................. |

I just don't really get the point of tearing apart artists you don't like. Even if they're insanely bad.
When I was an undergrad in 2000 they ran a full-page article that was a review of Figure 8. The reviewer was some girl who obviously hated Elliott Smith. It just rambled on and on and on and on about how all he does is "depressing" and all the songs sound the same. This was a FULL PAGE in a full-size newspaper. So I just don't get the point. You hate an artist, why waste your time lamenting about how much you hate them?

I am surprised i was taken so literally when i said Motzart was no Elliott...
Anyway... Yes, Say Hello Wave Goodbye is a cover - but there is a catch... Its more the lyrics that are a cover not the song itself... Once i found out it was a cover, i searched out the origional version, by soft cell, and its like a disco/techno kinda song... Hardly impressive. Where as David Grays version of the song was quite beautiful. Timmy, you had a good post as did you Bird Breath Its like the Avril look... Girls used to wear ties and dress like Avril Lavigne Even before she became populair. Needless to say, once her look became populair, these girls had to start dressing in some other new look, just so they wouldn't fit in. They obsess about individuality, and insist on being "themselves", yet become hypocritical and suddenly dress differently than how they were comfortable dressing just because they want to be different. One of my friends insults the band Pearl Jam every chance he gets... I don't remember his exact quote, but he seemd to insult them by saying they are incapeable of writing a good song, like they lack song writing skills... I am not overly fond of Pearl Jam, but Yellow Leadbetter is, in my opinion, close to brilliance. (I would say Last Kiss too, but its a cover of a cover of a cover). Even my opinion aside, how many Millions of albums has Pearl Jam sold? how many Years have they been around? how many live shows have they played? Countrys they have toured? etc. etc. Surely they must have SOME talent... just because he dislikes them, they are talentless? So much negativity irritates me... people seem to forget the multiple perspectives... they leave out the words "to me" Ex... "That sounds bad" should be "That sounds bad, to me" "That song sounds terrible" should be "That song sounds terrible, to me" One thing i love about the film industry, even the people who watch all the indie films, the low budget films, the local films, Even they are always happy to admit which hollywood blockbusters are brilliant... A big film buff would likley be happy to say "Million Dollar Baby" was brilliant, even though it had academy awards thrown at it... In the music industry however, as soon as a band switches record labels they are called "sell-outs". If someone gets played once or twice on the radio, they will often lose many origional fans. (though they will likley get an increase in pop-culture fans) Really quite sad. Last edited by ice_cold_ian; 05-02-2006 at 01:22 AM. |
