Not thinking of obvious choices (obvious would be something like Sunday Morning by Velvet Underground, though I have to say that Perfect Day by Uncle Lou, while probably even more obvious, would be pretty sweet).

Here's my pick: If You Could Read My Mind, by Gordon Lightfoot. Sad song, delicate fingerpicking (+awful, swelling strings which I could really do without). It used to be on the radio all the time when I was a kid. Johnny Cash did a pretty badass version, but Elliott might have made something much different out of it.

yeah i think in the book it says that that was one of the songs that he couldn't stand to listen to without crying or something.

the other one was roy orbison's "running scared"... which would have been nice if he covered too.
