I would have posted this in the existing thread, but the original poster Griffin Ritze aka grizzle, asked me to make a new thread and share this (so hopefully he can respond here). However I want to also bring something to the mods' attention.

Yesterday he tried to make this thread with the intention of giving us some great information about this song and the context in which it was performed. But thanks to Blamonet's completely idiotic post restrictions because he was new, somehow his post got deleted yet the thread still remained, with circuitrider87 as the first post talking about how excited she was.

When I saw the thread I noticed it still listed grizzle as having started the thread but his post was gone (it doesn't even show that now). Thank God for partial caching because I was able to do a google search for the thread and saw some of the info he was trying to share with us. I immediately sent him a PM asking what happened, he told me his posting issues mentioned above and then he reiterated basically what he was trying to say:

Recently his brother came into possession of a newly surfaced bootleg (I believe this is from a radio session) of Elliott performing at WMUC 88.1 studios in MD. Grizzle is working on mastering this session in full, but discovered something interesting - before the session formally began, Elliott asked if he could warm up with "a song," and then he launches into this:

He plays about 2 minutes of it, then he abandons it. I guess it's called "Misery Let Me Down," unfortunately I didn't get any other information from him regarding when this performance was from but the ID2 tags show 1997. He can respond himself now with further detail. The above is from Griffin's master of the full session, which he is working on and will share when he is done.

Anyway full credit goes to grizzle/Griffin for the song and the mastering, he just asked me to make this thread because again, Blamonet isn't friendly to new users trying to make a thread and share unheard/unleaked things apparently. Mods, can we unlock grizzle's account and then change this going forward perhaps? Who knows how much we've missed out on because of these ridiculous restrictions on new users?

EDIT: I was going to leave it at this, but apparently WMUC aired 2:45 AM from this same session a few weeks ago. They mentioned that they had "just discovered" this recording after thinking it had been lost for years. Now I'm not sure if this is also mastered by grizzle or not but I found this on my own. And I have to say this session sounds like it's absolutely brilliant. Anyway here you go (and it looks like I'll be able to have a new intro for Sweet Addy Radio next year ):

Can I like warm up...hell yes! It's a really nice tune, I like it a lot! 2:45 AM sounds almost exactly like on Either/Or. Great quality on both as well.

...but yeah, kind of agree with V about the quality control thing, he was great at picking out the cream of the crop.

regarding Elliott's quality control:

I think this song on its own is really good. Seems like "Misery" was not just an isolated idea in one song. However, much like how I felt about "The Real Estate," I think the issue is not that the song is "not good enough" but rather that a song like this just doesn't fit on any of his albums.

As more of these songs surface, I really feel like "Grand Mal" (the original 4th album title when Elliott was working on it in 1997) was supposed to be a "stripped down pop" affair. A bit more upbeat compared to the lo-fi efforts of Roman Candle, S/T, and even Either/Or to some respects, but not anywhere near what XO ended up being. I think it could have included a lot of the stuff on New Moon like "First Timer" as well as a lot of the Jackpot stuff like Miss Misery. Lot of "pretty" tunes and many "acousticy" numbers.

Of course, then he got signed to Dreamworks and I'm guessing he probably decided to amplify this idea to the max, and so XO was born.

Yeah, his unreleased work (including a lot of what's on New Moon) falls into the same kind of category as this song. A bit folksy and not quite hitting the same emotional core as most of the music that made it onto the albums. Stuff I still love, but yeah, there wasn't a place for it given the trajectory he was taking with his albums.

Not that it's all that musically similar, but the thing this song reminded me of was the song Blake Sennett wrote about Elliott...

I think that restriction on new members starting threads has to do with the fact that blamonet was getting bombarded by advertising bots some months ago. It was, what, something like 20,000 new threads created in a month? The only effective way to combat that is with some kind of automatic preventative measure.

Not saying the way it's set up is perfect, because I have no idea what the details are. But certainly keeping tens of thousands of spam attacks off the board is necessary, even if it creates some complications for new members with something genuine to share.

In any case, glad it got sorted out this time. I'm really enjoying this song, and the sound quality is great!

Yeah, I agree. Elliott seemed to not release his folk sounding songs.

I like the song a lot, the parts with the high notes remind me of the Satyricon live instrumental.

It feels so good to contribute in assembling and preserving Elliott's legacy. He's a constant inspiration to me.

There is an existing unedited version of the WMUC performance floating around, which my brother Dane discovered and passed along to me. I can't explain the how surprised I was to hear this tune after Elliott fumbled through an early morning take of Division Day.

I haven't touched 2:45am, or the other songs in this session yet. There is a lot of dead space between songs that was fun for me to listen to (WMUC engineers discussing studio odds and ends, Elliott politely asking them to leave the room because he was nervous.)

I mastered "Misery Let Me Down" to fit well alongside New Moon dynamics-wise since the fidelity of these recordings best matches that collection over his studio albums. I'll do the same with the remaining takes from the session and upload an unedited version with all of the studio banter as well as an edited version with just the songs.

I'm not a big fan of it but it's still nice to hear.

The song sounds pretty much like Leslie Gore's "Its My Party"....the verse melody of that song was obviously in his subconscious when he came up with this one. I suspect he noticed the pattern's derivative vibe and decided not to work further on it. But this is definitely one of the most derivative ES songs to surface.

It's still so rare to have high fidelity unreleased ES performances, I can't help but be grateful!
