Grand Mal: Studio Rarities (Expanded) is a compilation of Elliott Smith studio recordings that do not appear on Elliott’s full-length albums.

All of these tracks are already available from other sources in earlier generations. The intention for this mix was to craft the tracks into albums for a better listening experience, which includes modifying sound quality, adjusting volume, and eliminating dead air between tracks.

Marabalos spending countless hours remastering many of the tracks on this compilation. He did an incredible job, and he helped out in many ways beyond that, so please give him a round of applause. My thanks goes out to him and everyone who helped out along the way.

Some of these songs may be available commercially, in which case I encourage you to purchase them. Visit www.somesongs.net to get an idea of what songs appear on what releases.

Let's keep Elliott's legacy alive, keep buying and listening to his music, and do everything we can to make new fans out of friends, family, associates, strangers and enemies.

Yeah, the track order was an interesting challenge. I tried to include just about everything, so I had to figure out how to make it all work. I made the choice with the unreleased songs, for instance, to prioritize Buried Back Below, making it the best album I could, and then focused on In the Lost and Found with what remained, and lastly Some Kind of Holiday.

I certainly could have tried to make those three discs more balanced in my own estimation, and maybe some people would have preferred that method, but instead went with essentially trying to make Buried Back Below the crown jewel of the collection, and Some Kind of Holiday more of a catch-all for completists (though it still has a lot to love).

And of course, there's a million little choices that people might have done differently. Prioritizing one version of a song over its "alt" version, randomly including a live track, etc. In the end, when in doubt about how a choice might be received, I just went with what made this something I could listen to endlessly and happily.

Oh, and Marabalos made it a lot easier to arrange this, by the way, in how he remastered these so that I rarely had to consider the fidelity of tracks in how I would arrange them, which was much more of an issue for me when I was working on the previous version of Grand Mal.

This is really marvelous. Like many, I had a lot of this floating around on different computers and CD,s, but some tracks were buried or forgotten. And I did not have the will to sort through the 895 mbs from a while back to see what I did not have. What a labor of love. The sound is superb...I had already decided on Place Pigalle that he was "enduring" that song rather than "adoring", but now no doubt. A long term thanks....I started with Trash Treasury, and Keen Guy, Liquid Sunshine, Niiru and others guided me to a knowledge and appreciation of the music I would not have had otherwise. (Whatever happened to 6th and Powell!?)...thanks for a gift I will never be able to repay....the best I could have short of Interscope opening the vaults.
