I definitely approve of this. I am all about the ridiculous amounts of hard drive, for some reason. Not that I have that much now, but I haven't upgraded that in like three years, and 260-odd gigs was kind of crazy then. :)

True, you can never have enough space.
I was doing a lot of video editing in Florida, so i needed as much as possible.

I remember over 7-9 years ago, having a laptop with only 3-5GB of hard drive space and thinking that it was more than enough.

Mine was for video editing too!

Here's how old I am... when I was clearing out my cupboard to move here, I found the hard drive from my second ever computer, an Olivetti 25Mhz... it was 40 Mb big. The watch I was wearing at the time had a 64Mb drive on it...

Pulsewidth

Yikes. That's hard to imagine in relation to today's standards, especially having a watch with more memory than your computer.

The 1st time i ever used a computer was in 95. I can't remember much about it, except for Netscape navigator and the dos game "Quarantine," as well as Santa "Doom".

Did you do video editing for personal or professional use (just curious)?

Those are really good. I especially enjoyed the Frankenstein one (simple, but nice.)

My dad and I owned a videography business for a short time, so I did work geared more towards weddings and events (with some fancy animations here and there.)

Nice. I've mostly done live action stuff too, to be honest. I'm still learning the old animating. I just gave up on live action stuff for a while because actors can be a pain in the arse to work with sometimes...

Your dell is hell of sweet, Will, how much was it? I've been thinking about getting one of the mid-range Acers for work/travel.

My next upgrade will be a fanless heatsink for my cpu and maybe some sound proofing foam. It's a quiet machine already, but when I game it can go a bit "vrrroooooo!"

I forgot to mention I have a 19" belinea widescreen (1400x900 yeah!) and a thermaltake case, it looks kinda cheesy but I like it.

I have a stupid number of external USB drives.

Maxtor 120Gb USB2 - bought in 2003.
generic USB2 case with a 200Gb HDD (forget the brand, one of the main ones but possibly a Hitachi) - bought in 2004. I dropped it in Heathrow airport once from about 3/4 feet and since then it doesn't spin up reliably everytime tho. It's ok tho for data I don't care too much about.
Maxtor 250Gb USB2 + FireWire HDD - bought in 2005. I gave my 120Gb to Kendra.
40Gb 2.5" external USB2 (no power supply needed). My old laptop registry got corrupted in 2006 and the only easy way to restore the data was put in a new HDD into the laptop and just connect the old one as an external HDD (so I bought an external 2.5" case with a HDD, and switched the hard drives). Once I got the data off I had a new 2.5" external HDD.
Maxtor 320?Gb or something - Actually this is a work drive but it's kinda available for my own personal use. USB2 + FireWire.

Your dell is hell of sweet, Will, how much was it?

About US$1600. Hopefully cheaper now.

It's a Dell XPS M1210, a fairly well known high-end gaming laptop (google it - tons of reviews etc). Biggest complaint: LCD screen quality is LAME in terms of colour accuracy and viewing angle. Apparently Dell use three different models to build it and it's a bit of a roulette to which one you get... I got the worst one. I use an external 'monitor' (32" widescreen LCD TV) for games at home when I'm feeling grand so it's ok then. Other complaints: It's a DELL - shoddy install CD and default installation and useless "MediaDirect" button on it. Also don't like where the Home / End / Ins / Del keys are, and the audio ports are all at the front which doesn't work for me.

You rich bastard :D

12.1 is way too small a screen for me, if I were to use it for AutoCAD etc. 15.4 + a 20" lcd is what I normally use. I bet 12.1 is great for carrying around though.

I only own 1 external drive...a 1gb flash stick.

I only just noticed this!

Anyway, here it is; The Beast.

http://www.deedtheinky.com/temp/thebeast.jpg

Seen here running Windows XP SP2, and the latest versions of AVG and Open Office simultaneously. And it has an iPod Nano plugged into it, effectively doubling it's hard drive. :O

Ze specs....
Amd K6 "w/multimedia extensions?" 300 Mhz
64 Mb RAM
6 GB HDD (10Gb w/iPod)
And is currently maxed out at 800x600 resolution, 24 bit colour. :yar:

This thing will not die. Or more precisely, I will not let it die because I can't afford to replace it. But over the years it has been subjected to many experiments, such as...

- The "What would happen if I took a laptop apart to it's constituent parts and then put it back together?" test. (Answer: The sound card won't work and the right CTRL key goes missing forever.)

- The "How many times can an already old computer go through the x-ray machine at the airport and survive?" test. (So far: 12.)

- The "How long can a computer survive on the internet without any protection at all before it is consumed with spyware and viruses?" test. (2 days.)

- The "What happens if you plug it in to a UK plug that far exceeds the recommended voltage?" test. (Some sparks and that worrying 'bzzzt' sound that electicity makes sometimes, but otherwise nothing. It even used to work when I plugged a british phone jack into the modem, although I think said modem has long since perished.)

Also as well as being designed for Windows 98 (and despite tech support's insistence to the contrary) it can also comfortably run Windows 2000 and XP, although it does take about five minutes to boot up properly.

What it can't seem to do is run Linux for some reason. I have tried Ubuntu, The low-spec version of Ubuntu (Xubuntu or something) as well as Red Hat, SUSE, Slackware, Mandrake and Damn Small Linux at various times, and never got past the installer on any of them. So the ultimate goal of getting it to dual-boot XP and Linux remains tantalisingly out of reach.

My old Thinkpad was 300MHz. Very similar specs. Running Win98SE, ended up having my brother put Linux on it, now my dad owns it (tho I doubt he knows how to use it).

The thing was TINY tho, 10.4" screen. I loved it's portability. And it had USB and a network cable (via a PCMCIA dongle :( ) so it could do most things still. I loved it, my first lappy and most of the keys are faded.

PS my old Compaq has been thru at least 25 airport x-ray machines. maybe more, i used to fly 4x a week for work.

I have a very standard Packard Bell Notebook almost identical to Euan's but 1.77Ghz processor I think £500 smackeroos. It looked nicer than the cheaper stuff about and I'm happy with it. Thought about getting a new graphic/video card but theres not much point as I already get fucking wrist ache trying to play games it can handle (eg HALO1, Doom3) even with a USB Mouse, Joystick and a beanbag (I have no table in my room), so fuck that I'll just save up for a Playstation 3, it will take a monster PC to beat that come a year or two when the developers start pushing it to the X TREEMS.

G'luck with it! I really hate Dell now that I've had my XPS m1210 for more than 1 year.

The M1330 had several defects when I first received it, so they built and sent me a new one. So far, everything has been fine. However, since each part is fitted so close, the thing loves to give off a lot of heat. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the purchase.

What problems did you have with the M1210? Judging by reviews, the only problem mentioned was a hissing sound when the power supply is plugged in.

Problems with my M1210:
- I hate the location of the audio ports.
- The battery broke shortly after 1 yr warranty. It lasts about 5 mins now. So I have to keep it plugged in pretty much all the time.
- Sometimes it starts up but you can't use either the mousepad or keyboard. So all you can do is power off and try again.
- I hate Windows XP Media Center edition.
- Gets overheated and gradually slows down to the point of freezing during playing a game e.g. PES 6. Usually once it starts slowing down I have to stop playing and let it cool down before I can resume.
- I generally dislike the power management options.

Ok, so here are the specs for the laptop I use at work:

Dell Precision M4300
C2D T7500 @ 2.2ghz
2gb of RAM
160GB HD
Nvidia Quadro FX 360M (I think it has 256mb dedicated)

It's ugly as hell and has a terrible, grainy screen.
Fortunately I've been able to hook it up to a Dell 22" monitor, which is ok.

My work workstation is crappy but I just use it for email, Office and to log on to various servers to do actual work. The main dev servers are a quadcore PIII Xeon 1.4 GHz with 4Gb RAM. I also have another Windows 2003 server as my own "lab" machine but it's kinda crappy (512 Mb RAM).

The production servers are dual Xeon 3.6 GHz with 6Gb RAM and 1.5 Tb HDDs for the web servers and quad Xeon 3.6 GHz, 8Gb RAM, 1.7 Tb HDDs (RAID 5) for the database servers.
I also have a separate unmonitored internet connection on a separate machine (off the network) at work, for testing purposes. :)
