View Full Version : Best mass produced beef jerky?

As I'm going to Boston next month I shall be stocking up on jerky! I don't like Jack Links, so no need to suggest that! Oberto used to be my favourite, but I went off it slightly after eating about 4 big packs in about 4 days. I really love Pennimans (sp?), though I rarely saw it in USAland. Is it fairly easy to find and how much is it?! The jalapeno flavo(u)r is the nicest jerky I've ever had. Any suggestions for finding this wonderful stuff in MA or NH area?! Cheers.

p.s. please suggest other brands for me to sample, danke.
p.p.s. don't chastise me for making a post not strictly to do with recipe offers or cooking. :(

Do any of them not have MSG in them?

The Tourist

hopefully they all do. Since I rarely get jerky it's not really a worry of mine. Also, for anyone who misunderstood, the mass produced bit was referring to mass production and not having been produced in mass. I hope no one made that terrible mistake, simply awful. egads.

you're a jerky.

guhaw. i tried jerky once, and thought it tasted like plastic so declined any further offerings. pork scratchings are where it's at for your dried meaty goods! find out if american "pork rinds" compare or are just the same thing, eliot. Unless you already know?

Eliot. They sell Pemmican's at Wal-Mart.

At least they do here in Kentucky. I say they do in Mass. too.

I LUV pork Scratchings. They can't be too healthy to eat all the time, but they are really more-ish once you start on them!

I had a bite of beef jerky once and it was one of the worst things that I have ever placed in my mouth.

paul, agreed about the scratchings. my mum has been getting these wicked ones from the butchers lately, they're a pound for a big old bag, and some of them are the size of mars bars I swear. I used to be scared if the "wet" ones as I called them, you know with lots of the soft bit, but now I've converted and embrace it all!

Probably the reason I've put weight on and split the ass of my trousers yesterday! lol, better get my mum to get the needle and thread out.

I like pork scratchings but only in small doses. I'm not a fan of the 'wet ones', but if I accidentally bite into one I do eat it. You'd look like a bit of a twat spitting it out in a pub, or summink.
To the non-believers... the jerky you get over here is a bit poo really. If you can get your hands on some pemmicans then I think you'd change your minds.

I agree with jerky in principle, meaty and salty goods, but my experience is similar to grania's. i distinctly remember not even bothering gulping it down just spitting it out.

The Tourist
01-31-2007, 11:12 AM
yeah, sometimes you can get really fatty, tough jerky. I tend to spit that out too. But when it's right it's really tasty. That's why Jack Links is arse, it's way too slimey for me.

I like beef jerky but some of it is awful. I haven't had it in aaaages tho. There was one brand I used to get in Sydney, it had Chinese writing all over it. It wasn't too chewy and very flavourful.

I haven't tried any American jerky brands. I've had Slim Jims and they're

The Tourist
01-31-2007, 06:19 PM
I wouldn't mind slim jims if they didn't do that vile popping thing when you bite into them. Still, I find myself persevering with them all the same cos I have them so seldom the rankness of the pop is reduced in my mind.

south african biltong is waaaay better than jerky.
i got this really organic, fresh peri peri stuff from a south african shop in putney and by god! it was the best shit I'd tasted, almost ever!

and yeah, paul. what're you on about? peperami are still around. twas not so long ago that they brought about the peperami noodle thingy and the black stuff et al.

yeah, i saw them in sainsburys today. normal, spicy and lethal.

The Tourist
01-31-2007, 08:01 PM
they're not lethal, they're just tastums.
Some biltong is really good, some is poo. I'd say I prefer jerky over biltong, but good biltong could probably beat up jerky. Shame it's rarely ever that good.

Yeah I used to eat them when I visited the US but now I live here I don't eat them. Same goes for a lot of fast food.

Lot of anti-jerky jive in here... I love the shit, but honestly if it weren't for my aunt from Oklahoma sending us a bag of her homemade stuff, I never would get a taste for it. Of course, nothing beats homemade, so I go for any jerky whatsoever. I'm so cheap, any kind will do.

There's an add for "Beef Jerky Australia" at the tope of blamo in this thread! Look!

I just realised there's a whole world of beef jerky and people who eat it I know nothing about...although I used to have a South African friend in primary school and I remember trying some dried meat stuff with her once that wasn't bad...maybe Biltong???!! Hmmm

Were Grove Matrix the djs who used things like drills and such to add to their amazing sets? I don't recall Duncan shagging it up in the basement. :(

T'other day there were 4 ads for various beef jerkys at the top of the page. I guess relevant ads are placed from keywords in the thread title?

Also the ads are customized for your IP geography I would imagine. And they cycle too I bet.

This thread may be well past it's prime, but it's inspired me to get some jerky, so I think I need to reply.

I like jerky, but tend to forget it exists. Slim Jims are tasty, but not exactly high quality. I've noticed that there are a few basic types of jerky found in gas stations etc...

"Slim Jim Rip-offs" - A long stick with a skin that snaps. Usually just a mix of beef & pork that's heavily soaked in vinegar & held together by corn syrup. Some brands are better than others.

"Chewing tobacco-leather" - This is what it sounds like. I like this style, but I can't stand it when it's so dried out that it's impossible to chew.

"Chewing tobacco-soft" - Like the above, but soft enough to be able to bit into & chew. This tends to be the best stuff, although the softer nuggets (below) are also really tasty.

"Beef tips" - I've only tried these once when a friend got them, but they were really good. They're like soft nuggets. While they look like dog food (the wet kind), they taste great.

Actually, the last time I've even had beef jerky was probably a year ago or so. I bought this terrible, terrible pickled "firecracker", or some such nonsense. It was basically soft meat by-products put together in a mush of awfulness. Terrible, just terrible.

There was a general beef jerky one...now it's beef recipes! And they're not actually popup ads, they're just links? Anyway, I'm not savvy enuff to edit them out.
People sure do lurve their beef!

wot you sayin'? My thread ain't dead mouldy, cunt.
I do enjoy the beef nugget things. They're the only Jack Links product I like cos they actually have a decent, non-shite texture... and taste!
I'll have to investigate this 'chewing tobacco jerky' business. I'll have to chew some in a Bostonian bar, what with their crappy no smoking laws.

Jerky is some sort of meat - usually beef - cut really thin and dried with red pepper flakes and other spices. I haven't had real meat jerky in over 15 years, but I remember it tasting really chewy and then just like roast... it really depends on the spices added, and anyway, it's more of a texture thing than anything else, I think. What I mean is, it's fun to chew. We're like dogs that way, I guess.

I really like these two non-meat versions:

Vegan Dream
Stonewall's Jerquee

The latter tends to taste like what I'd imagine dog food to taste like, but it's really good with some sort of peach-blend juice. One of these days when I get a food drier, I'm going to attempt to make my own mashed-nut version of jerky. Probably peanut with chili sauce.

I've become addicted to Primal Strips, which are meatless so I don't reckon a wide range of people here would be too into them. They're really delicious though, and having been a meat eater for 19 or 20 years of my life, I certainly can't tell the difference.

I do make some pretty bomb teriyaki tofu jerky, though.

If it's made of seitan then it normally tastes like what non-vegetarian jerky tastes like. My favorite flavor is mesquite with lime... Mmm, mm.

I went to a vegetarian place for lunch yesterday and had a sort of faux chicken panini. It was ok. I think they slathered it with this overly-sweet sauce to make it taste better and less dry.
The faux meats I've had in vegetarian Buddhist-catering restaurants in Taiwan taste a lot better imo.
