Well it depends on what you want. The best games are Gears Of War Ghost Recon, Oblivion, Rainbow six, and Battlefield 2. Now if you don't mind having your family or kids for that matter play a bit of a gorey game then go with Gears of War all the way. All the other games are killing stuff and people but to a less degree. Sports games like madden are always nice as well. However if you want a more friendly system with still some good games go get a wii.

I would suggest Fifa 7 or Pro Evo 6 if you think you will like that sort of thing. I'm not a big football game fan myself but my friends rave about them.
say monsieur chaos: have you played dead rising? is it any good?

I just bought my 360 and I got Gears of War, Rainbow Six: Vegas, and Perfect Dark. GoW is by far the best game. It's really, really good... and I've played a lot of FPS games. R6 is good, but I'm not sure I'd like it that much if I wasn't already a fan of the old R6 games. It also has a lot of gameplay mechanics in common with GoW, so if you get those two games together, you might be annoyed by their similiarities (the cover mechanic, blindfiring, reviving your downed teammates who pretty much can't die.) Also, characters in R6 drop the f-bomb as much as they would in any Tom Clancy novel (a lot). It's just as kid-un-friendly as GoW.
I've heard Viva Pinata is really good. I've been wanting to try it, but the Xbox Live demo is just a fuckin promo video. I think it would be a good change of pace from my shooter games.

BAD NEWS! Our 360 started freezing up and two days later, a black screen came up and said to contact Microsoft or log onto a website for info. So we did, we had to take off the hard disk drive and put it back on, but then it kept freezing up. So my husband called Microsoft and they are sending us a box, then we send our 360 in their box, someplace to be repaired, then they send it back!
Cool that they are fixing it! Plus he found out online that many are having this problem. The red ring around the power button lights up on 3 sides too.

Your husband seems like he may have an above average IQ, why is he playing a 360 and not a PC?
