View Full Version : Zelda!
So I've sort of grown out of video games in a general sense, but a Zelda game on any console makes me giddy. I only recently got the Oracle games for the Colour Gameboy but they're as ace as I could have expected, to the extent that I got a gameboy player for my GameCube especially to play them on the telly. So yeah, Zelda: discuss.
Has anyone got the new one yet? On Wii or GCN?
What did people think of The Wind Waker?
Favourite Zelda game?

I stopped playing zelda since a link to the past. I always thought that 3D zeldas were too complicated and never bothered to get into them. But i must say, twilight princess is looking pretty good....must resist.
They're not that complicated once you get into them, give in to temptation, you know you want to!
Any road up, you should definitely get the Oracle games. I hear Minnish Cap is good too.
I need more friends into Zelda so I can play the Four Swords games sometime, has anyone here played them?

Haven't gotten the new one yet. Thought Wind Waker was fucking great and thought that everybody who complained about the graphics was a petty fool. Favorite: A Link to the Past.

I've only played Ocarina of time. Shame there isn't a reliable gamecube emulator for the PC. No way would I get a console to play the only good game on it. That is, apart from Resi 4 and that amazing Bloody Roar game.

It was a wonderful game and played and felt just like a 3D Zelda game, none of the games before Ocarina could be said to have realistic graphics anyway. The only complaint I'd level at it would be how small a number of temples it had, I remember realising I was in the last one and being a bit disappointed. But yeah, despite the graphics it didn't feel childish or anything, it was very enjoyable.

the Minish Cap was quite good as well. I liked how you could go small etc.

I have Twilight Princess for Wii, and it's amazing. I've played over 15 hours already, and I'm not even halfway through the game. It's supposed to game anywhere between 40 to 80 hours to complete. Super duper!
Ocarina of Time was epic. I don't think another game will come along that is just like that. There's a reason IGN gave it a 10/10, Famitsu gave it a 40/40, and it's widely regarded as the best game ever. And I agree.
Wind Waker was good, but too short for me. It only had about 5, maybe 6 dungeons, and they were pretty boring. I hated the visuals at first, but after I picked it up, it made sense. The cel-shading style really allowed you to see emotion in all the character's faces, and it may seem small, but the water looked awesome in that game. It wasn't realistic, but the Zelda series isn't supposed to be realistic. It's fantasy. It's got elves, and rock people, and fishes that talk. It's fantasy, and the graphics of pretty much every game (LttP, OoT, WW, TP for example) reflect that.
Get Twilight Princess. It's sick.

I totally remember the first time I played Ocarina Of Time. I had bought the game on the release date, and I had a fever that night. I played it anyway though, and only got to the part where you enter the Deku Tree for the first time, but it was just absolutely mindblowing. I fucking love that game. Undoubtedly the best game for the N64. Majora's Mask wasn't too shabby either.
I can't wait for Twlight Princess.

I'm considering buying the GCN version in the mean time, but I don't know if that'd ruin it. I wasn't this excited even for Ocarina, because I'd only played Link's Awakening, and being quite young I wasn't as in awe of it being a great transition 3D as I maybe should have been.
Majora's Mask was great, I don't think I made it very far the first time I tried playing it because I felt a bit annoyed that all my good work got undone when you went back in time again, but I dug it out earlier this year and loved it. It was darker than Ocarina of time, though no where near as epic, and like Wind Waker, it had few dungeons.
I want a Wii so I can play the first two too.

I love Ocarina of Time! But I got trapped in that damn underwater tower thing for a l-o-n-g time. I finally gave up because I forgot what I was looking for. I did get out once and beat my twin, but when I play that game (once a year?) I'm still in the water tower. ??? I really want to start over and not quit.
I have a 25 page walk-thru guide too....for emergencies.
Windwaker was fine, but I watched my husband play it so I already knew what was ahead, he got bored of driving the boat and quit.
I can't wait to play the new one.

Ocarina of Time is hands down, the best video game ever created. The style of gameplay, which is standard now, wasn't around until Ocarina of Time came out. Add onto that the depth of the world they created, the upgrades, the graphics, boss fights, dungeon design... you get the point.
From what I've heard, the new one is actually better than OoT, though it's not as big a step forward it as OoT was from Link to the Past so it won't seem quite as good if you've already played Ocarina, but still.... yeah.
I'm just getting the gamecube version of the game. i can't afford to buy an new conslole for a loong time.
I did the same thing as you Fab i bought the gameboy player for my Gamecube and i love it. I've been playing Zelda the minish cap, Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission, and some castlevania stuff.
I even got one of these guys for mine:
http://www.nintendospin.com/images/975/ss01.jpg
I'm really tempted to get the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess, because it'll probably be a whole extra year before I get a Wii, but don't want to spoil the excitement of controlling it with the wiimote with "yeah, but I've already beaten the game", though generally I find Zelda to have a lot of replay appeal, with all the hidden bits and extra stuff. I imagine there are very very few people who get everything.

Is there any real differences between the gamecube version and the wii version? Other than graphics and the controller obviously...
The graphics are supposed to be exactly the same. Apparently the whole game in the Wii is mirrored from the GC version, because they had to make Link right handed for control issues, which led to issues with which way doors opened and stuff, so they just flipped the whole thing. Also, the GC version doesn't support 16:9 TVs.
So no, no real difference. Though I would imagine playing one then the other would be weird.

Which is the best Zelda ever?
Ocarina of time was mind-blowing and ground-breaking. But aside from being a great game in itself, it was especially amazing in the context of where it came from: basically, it was a 3-D version of the original 2-D versions, and I don't think new-comers who never played the original Zelda could have possibly gotten as much giddy pleasure out of it as those who had. It all begins with The Legend of Zelda on the NES. Thus it is possible to argue that The Legend of Zelda was the best Zelda ever.
Personally, I prefered Majora's Mask to Ocarina, in at least the feel and atmosphere, it's a bit like Zelda's Empire Strikes Back. The only thing I'd complain about would be the comparitively small ammount of dungeons. It's hard to be entirely objective though, when as you said, the jump to 3D in Ocarina was awe-inspiring, and nothing in the series will ever be quite as different to what came before it as that. It was one of the few complaints about TP, in that whilst the wiimote was preferable as a controller, it just wasn't as revolutionary as 2D to 3D.

Majora's Mask: that's an interesting selection for a favourite Zelda. Though I've never had the pleasure of playing it, from what I've heard it's kind of a curiosity among the series, and I kind of remember hearing that the whole three-day cycle thing was the result of the Nintendo's urgency to bring out a new Zelda as quickly as possible and a smaller team of developers. I like your description of "Zelda's Empire Strikes Back", so now I'm curious.

Agreed. I'd have to say, to someone who has never played any of the Zelda series, TP would appear to be the best game out of all of them. The graphics + controls are a pretty big step up, but the transition from 2-D to 3-D just left an impression on me that I don't think can ever be topped. It wasn't just the 3-D side of things, but that the gameplay was so open ended that it was like nothing else before it. If you were stuck on a dungeon, you could explore the rest of the game. Not that other games didn't have that, but with Ocarina, the side quests were just as much fun as the main quest.
Is it me, or are all Zelda games the type of games which you can't get into right off the bat? Over time, it always happens though.
I didn't understand Majora's Mask three-day cycle crap..Can someone explain it again? It put me off playing the whole game.Well it was like Ocarina in that it went from day to night and back again, but at the end of the third day, the moon crashed in, so as you get towards the end of the third day you play the song of time and end up at the start of the first day with meetings and such reset, but still in possession of items and all that. It put me off playing it at first, I kept going back to the first day after I'd done anything because I was worried I'd somehow forget and lose everything, but it's fine once you're into it. Unlike Ocarina, however, specific events happen only on certain days, and they're linked, so if you foil some robbery on the first day, the shop will have a certain item on the last day (because it didn't get stolen).
You really should get it, just hit up eBay or something, it'll be cheap as anything.

Whats with TTP on the GC, every time you pick up rupees, it tells you "you have collected rupees (5, 10, 20, 50, 100)". I know this already! It's like you have collected something new for the first time!

sorry i'm late to the thread...somehow i missed it. anyway, the zelda games are my favourite games of all time (with the possible exception of shining force...but i won't get into that).
to answer the original questions 1) yes, i got it for gamecube for christmas last year.......MY GOD! it's awesome. i honestly think i might like it better than ocarina of time...but i can't be sure. 2) I LOVED wind waker. ashamedly, i was turned off by the graphics for about two minutes. then i adjusted and loved the game. 3) my favourite zelda? hot damn. ummmm....pass? i love them all (with the possible exception of zelda 2...it was kinda fun, but not really) but then again i still have a ways to go before i play them all. i still haven't played the oracle games (as soon as i have the money, i'm buying them...i have a gba), link's awakening (same thing), majora's mask (i just bought the collector's disc for gcn and i'll be playing it soon), and four swords (i have no friends that like zelda). i've reserved a copy of phantom hourglass when it comes out. i guess i'm obsessed.........yeah, i am. oh well.

good god! i just beat majora's mask and that game is AWESOME! seriously. i think it contends with ocarina. holy shit. a little short and not enough dungeons, but damn it was great. i found it a little strange that you get 6 bottles though. every other game that get bottles has 4 (unless you count the potions in the first one...which you technically get two at a time), and you can't keep what you have in these for that long because you lose stuff when you go back to dawn of the first day. just a little strange i thought.
