families always remember the past. if they don't like the present, that's too damn bad. you have to live for yourself, not for them. Unless, of course, they're paying all your bills, in which case, you're fucked.

You have to prove yourself for them to see the new you. You can't do things that they may connect with your past, like visiting old friends or places.
But if you've fucked up repeatedly, it will be harder and take years for them to trust that the changes are true. Even after 5 years, they may still think you'll mess up. You have to find peace with yourself.

You all made some good points. Family want forget,but what if they do,and your the one stuck there trying to let go.Even through you know its the past but its still hunting you.You change but your still afraid you might slip.

Don't slip up. You have to decide what you want and do it, no matter how tough it is. You won't mess up if you want it bad enough.
Of course I have no idea what your talking about. If it's drugs and alcohol, I don't believe you can quit those for anyone but yourself.

It's the story of my life. Luckily with the help of lots o' therapy I've realized I probably will never make my family happy. So what do I say? Fuck 'em! Ever since I met my husband, in their eyes I could be leading a very different life if we never had met. What it came down to was do I want to make them happy and find a man who is well-educated and in a nice salary bracket and not a pothead who may or may not make me happy, or be blissfully happy with my man who isn't that well educated and doesn't make a whole lotta money and is a happy pothead. Needless to say, I married him and even though it didn't surprise my family one bit, they would still rather me find someone else. They are an awful critical and judgemental bunch. But I've made it through 26 years of dealing with their bullshit and I feel I'm a better person because of it. So what it comes down to is, do you really want to live your life to please your family or do you want to make yourself happy?
