View Full Version : Q-Tips

I was having a conversation at work last night with one of the hostesses about personal hygeine and we both agreed that cleaning ones ears with q-tips is essential to remove all that filthy earwax (so much bacteria!! yuck!).

She then said something to the effect of "but there are a lot of other things you can do with q-tips hygenically." but wouldn't elaborate upon that.

So...girls...what other uses do you ladies have for q-tips as far as hygeine and appearance goes? What the hell else would you use them for???

er.. D: i dunno what she was talking about really.
but i use them to apply/remove makeup every day.. it's great for eye makeup removal because they're so small! there's one other thing i have used them for but i'd rather not share it w/ blamo. haw.

ear buds...as we call them this side of the pond...I use them to clean my ears. But once the nurse told me that this was bad as it just pushes more wax into the ear than what you clean out...so you end up with loads of compacted wax in your ear hole.

I've only ever used them in my ears.

They're horrible and useless.

The ear cleans out the wax, so yeah, Q-tips really aren't necessary. The problem though, is that there are times when I feel something in my ears and I have to complusively remove it. It's just so satisfying after a shower.

Q-tips are useful for cleaning certain things, but it seems like their intended purpose is actually counter-productive. IT'S ALL A GIANT CONSPIRACY BY JOHNSON & JOHNSON.

sometimes, when i stick a q-tip too deep into the ear hole, i have a coughing fit.

ugh, i know about q tips pushing the wax in or whatever, but i could never go without cleaning the inside of my ears. I can always feel the wax in them when i don't and it's gross.

My uncle goes to the ear doctor like once a year tho to get the wax taken out of his ears and it sounds sooooo cool. He says it's like hearing underwater before the wax is taken out, and once it is it's a brand new day.

ear syringeing, I've oft wanted that. I only use them once in a while, just when I feel like my ears are a bit slimier than usual, hukhuk.
I used to shove things up my nose to induce sneezing fits.. it felt so right at the time. :O

I use q-tips when I'm fixing my make-up and I also use them to clean the top of the dish soap bottle.

The Tourist

dish soap bottle? not soap dish, or soap bottle? a dish for a soap bottle?
if so, then i just rinse it under the tap and rub off soap smeg with a finger. hmm.

Yes, it's the soap bottle that contains the soap for washing the dishes in the kitchen. I am particular about it's cleanliness and I have to stick the q-tip in all the little spaces where the soap likes to collect. This is different from the pump soap dispenser in the bathroom which does not have the same problem. It's just one of many things I have to keep a certain way.

Q-Tips compacting wax---true dat. Once, I felt like there was something in my ear and it drove me nuts so I had to constantly fiddle with my ear, pulling at my lobe sometimes and pulling my earhole open more, to see if whatever was there would come out. After about two weeks I was sitting & fiddling, and I touched something in my ear! D: I was sort of able to move it around, so I kept messing with it until after about 10 minutes I jabbed my fingernail into it and it came out...a giant wax ball, as big as pony bead!

It was so gross. But I felt better afterward. Now I'm exxxxxxtra careful not to push the Qtip into my ear and only clean around the outside lil nooks & crannies.

TMI? Too bad, I didn't start the topic. :-*

yeah, just eyemakeup! but you gotta use the no-name brand ones. right now i'm using the q-tip brand and they are so much worse for eyemake up cause they have more cotton and get all..yknow, unravely and get i get cotton threads in my eyeballs.

and for ear wax you can put a drop of mineral oil in yer ear and thats supposed to dissolve the wax and its better than q-tips. never tried it though. i've been using q-tips everyday for my whole life and i should be deaf if it just pushes shit back by now.

I use them to clean my bellybutton pericing, but that's about it.

I like the real cotton ones for makeup; I just give 'em a twirl in a drop of water first anyway, so then the cotton leaves me alone. The synthetic ones aren't absorbent (for things like cleaning piercings, nail polish smudges, etc) so I don't use those...

Ever used non-cotton drugstore-brand (like Walgreens) "absorbent puffs"? D: Horrible horrible horrible, like pieces of fiberglas insulation. And their "genuine" cotton balls have bits of weeds & shit in 'em. No joke.

milpool

shit yo! even if i twirl them in vaseline i STILL get cotton threads in my balls.

speakin of balls, i'm gonna close mine for the night. zz

yeah uh, i'm not sure what this chick could be talking about pete!

like everyone else, i use them for cleaning out my ears (i don't believe that they make it worse, if i miss a cleaning my earphones come out all gunky and disgusting), make up, cleaning piercings or cuts, etc. nothing like...unmentionable.

i'm thinking of things i wish i wasn't.

HA if you really want your ears cleaned, go to the doctor. i've had it done before. they stick all sorts of wires in there. the doc pulled out this huge (about the same size as a quarter) thing of ear wax. but yeah, what other people have said... q-tips aren't good for you.

when i put on eyeliner, i use q-tips to clean it up. like, after i smudge it, i use the q-tips to get off the excess so it looks nice and neat. also, when i put on mascara and i get some on my eyelid, i use a q-tip to get it off. :D

blackeyedAngel

i've always heard that q-tips are bad because they can damage your ear, and they push the earwax even further back. i was always told not to put anything smaller than a football or an elbow in your ear, but i still use q-tips to clean them out...i just don't go very deep. someone was telling me recently how they went to the doctor to get their earwax drained or something, which sounds totally gross, but they said it feels amazing.

I had my ears syringed about two years ago when i went for a health check up...it was fantastic...you hear (and feel) all tos water whooshing around and these big chunks of wax come out...and then it feels like you have a new set of ears afterwards.

yeah i had this problem where i was listening to my music on full blast and still didnt find it loud enough so finally i went to the doc and they were like yeah youve been using the q-tips too hard for a looong time, and he did the water thing and it feels soooo wierd and good like the ocean is inside your head and as it gets cleaned out more and more you can hear more and more. everything gets so clear like you could hear a pin dropping, its amazing. i had no idea how much sound i was missing out on. i reccomend anyone who uses q-tips a lot get it done.

so yeah, q-tips not so great, im told to use the oil instead but i havent tried that yet as it seems a bit messy and gross so i just go light with the q-tips now...

Hm. Maybe I should get that done (when I'm back on insurance). Cause over the past couple months either my computer is quieter when I listen to music with headphones on or my ears have gone to shit.

okay i've gotta ask what is using Q-tips "too much"... I use them about ... every five days. and I don't jam the thing in there; i'm paranoid about compacting the wax so I try to make more of light scooping motion as opposed to a jam-it-in-there-and-twirl motion. and i don't go very deep. so what the fuck is the problem, am I going to die. Thanks :D

Well I feel a little weird because I never clean my ears and they just don't get that waxy or anything...whilst everyone else seems to be compulsively ear cleaning!

I only really use cotton buds dipped in nail polish remover to remove traces of wayward nail polish from around the edge when I'm painting my nails. It's the best...trying to use bigger pads can't get in the cracks and leaves cotton threads stuck in the polish.

if there is a problem you will know, your ears will just start to bug you more and it feels like theyre never clean because its been pushed back inside your ear so much and builds up where you cant get at it so you dig more which makes it a lot worse.. i think what youre doing is fine, i wouldnt worry.

My ears bug me all the time...I must need a wire/water routing. I'm scared! D:

lisa
10-25-2006, 12:58 AM
dont be scared, it involved no wire thing, it was like a plastic tube thing that squirted water into your ear with pressure, it doesnt hurt at all it tickles and feels funny and sounds neat.

oh i know, when i go to the beach or something and i get water stuck in there and you cant hear, thats the worst, but it wasnt like that at all, it was in and out, like rinsing your mouth when you brush your teeth i guess, leaves you with that good clean feeling.
