Euan wants to know "how girls do it".
I've just always been able to. You?

After not wearing them for about 20 years, I walk surprisingly well.

Yes, I can walk in heels.
For about 10 feet. Then one of my ankles twists and I go down.

I'm very flattered. This means a lot to me. I do admire the art of walking in heels. You are all crazy.

I can but my feet hurt like hell afterward :(
I think anyone, men or women, could walk in heels if they tried. However, just like any other physical activity in which the body is used in an unnatural way, it takes repetition to stretch the muscles and will always be bad for the back and knees. Since I have problems with both of those parts even without wearing heels it can be quite painful for me, I usually end up removing them halfway throughout the night and walk around barefoot like a skank :( I love how they look but save them for special occasions. Of course, my heels collection is signifigantly larger than my "everyday shoe" collection. My boyfriend tried on heels once for the first and walked like a pro, then again they were pumps so he didn't have to worry about ankle stabilization or keeping his foot in the arch straps. As for height I can't really go above 3" without causing serious functionality problems! Too bad all the hot ones are 3.5 and above

I'm more interested in another question about heels...
ladies - can you walk up and down stairs in heels??? I don't see how this is possible.

walking up stairs is easy in heels. your foot is already in the right position!
walking DOWN stairs is really hard though. especially if you're drunk. which is pretty much the only time i wear heels.. there's a lot of railing-holding going on. :ladybug:

I can walk in heels.
Now walking in really tall high heels and looking good doing it is a different story. I don't have the girliest walk anyways, I walk kind of hyper like my body is trying to catch up with me so I walk even sillier in high heels. too bad too, since I'm short heels could come in handy but eh...I usually don't wear tall heels. My favorite shoes are like one with a thick small sqare heel, or one with a wedge...they give me a little bit of height but aren't as hard to balance on as tall thin heels.

i used to be able to walk alright in heels but gradually my feet have become warped due to years of abusing them and so now when i try to wear heels, something happens to my toes where they get kinda numb and feel as if they're gonna honestly snap off, not even kidding. It's a gross feeling.

I can but I take much shorter strides than I normally would. I don't think I look as graceful either. Plus, my feet hurt like a bitch about 5 minutes of straight standing, so I tend to wear them only if I'm going to be sitting down a lot.

i love them but they hurt my feet after a while. they're more for sitting down in than walking around in.

I still love shoes, even just looking at shoes, but my love of heels is fading a LOT. I am slightly bitter that my ability to run around doing whatever I liked for however long I liked in stilettos when I was 16 has already deserted me by the tender age of 22...most of my higher heels just HURT - that horrible burning feeling (thickened skin on balls of feet from all the heel wearing) then numbness in the morning. Now I either have to make sure to bring back-up flat shoes, be sitting down constantly or actually the easiest thing has just been not to wear them anymore. In Melbourne too, we have the preserved bluestone gutters/curbs and alleyways - like cobblestones. So every stone is uneven and trying to cross these stretches of pavement is rather hellish. Also the classic Big Girl's Blouse sketch of getting caught in the tram tracks comes to mind :D
I am now cultivating a cute flat shoe/flat boot collection and my rule is now only slight heels are allowed. This has the added benefit of being more in line with my political beliefs

Ah, me too, they're just fun to wear! I'm particularly good at pouring wine over heels accidentally. I got props at that posh wedding for being stable on my four inch heels despite being sloshed, when all the other girls had sat down or taken their shoes off hours before, then I did take my shoes off and got called a midget. Hmmf.

Heels are pretty much an abomination to feet. I used to wear higher heels in high school on special occasions, but ever since my toe went numb for about a year because of them I've nixed anything more than a kitten heel. I also refuse to buy shoes if they hurt, period. Even if they're cute. If they've comfortable I can walk normally without worrying. I still kinda hate heels though because of uneven sidewalks, unexpected holes, etc.

I assume you have to be careful with shoes though Kendra? My friend managed to get out of wearing the ugliest court shoes ever as part of a work uniform cos of her diabetes, I guess it has some plus points! She wore cute age-appropriate flats instead of hideous matronly pointy blocky heel things.

Well, it's like anything with diabetes...if you keep good control you can wear whatever you want. I got the nerve damage when I had only been diagnosed for 1 year, so it was really a non factor. In short, I got nerve damage cos I was standing in heels for 7 fucking hours! At my grandmother's wake, no less. But yeah in general I'm trying to be really nice to my feet, in case I get into trouble many years down the road. Then I'll be sitting in a rocking chair and look like that woman from Chocolat and moan about my corns while stuffing my face with chocolate cake.

am i always that friggin' red?!no, you're not! sometimes you're green and sometimes you're purple. at other times you are tanned and very rarely are you pale.

I am VERY commonly pale. my summer tan is now almost entirely gone and I'm back to a pristine snow-like complexion (which I love)

I hear the secret to going downstairs in heels is to not let the heel hit the step and go down on just your toes. Going up is easy, I guess.
I don't wear heels because I'm pretty top heavy, and I haven't been able to see my toes past my bosom since 1995.

I tend to walk like that on stairs in general. Maybe that's why I have bad knees.

True, but Being 6'2 In 2 inch heels is so extreme! And whenever I wear heels EVERYONE points out how I don't need them. Just like whenever I wear shorts people gasp at my whiteness and make me self-conscious, so I don't wear shorts anymore. :(

If you had a really tall boyfriend no one would be telling you not to wear heels :)

my friend has the same problem and shes developed almost a hunch because she leans down so much when standing around people cause she feels so akward about it. and she loves heals so she wont date guys who arent at least a few inches taller, like 6 2" or up so she can still wear them.
im 5 1" so i wish i could be all girly and wear heels all the time but when i do on those very rare special occasions i end up hating myself for it cause my feet hurt soooo much after like 2 mins of walking and i can only take tiny steps so i feel like a fool, and im clumsy in general so i think i probably look pretty stupid in them. and sometimes they make my feet cramp up  definitely not for standing events... im very happy flats are suddenly so popular cause they look cute and fancy enough to make an outfit work but they dont hurt or cause foot deformities etc like heels do
ewww i remember seeing a special like 20/20 or something talking about women who actually got foot surgery to make their feet the shape of the heel cause they wear heels every day. so disgusting and not safe by any means...
