Again, I think this thread will do well on the chick board, although I think my testicles are ascending back into ovaries. Anyway...
It's pretty obvious our culture is just naive about healthy eating. The majority of foods are made up of sugars & trans fats. Sugar isn't necessarly bad, but refined sugar throws off the caloric balance of natural sugars like fructose. The worst problem is quite simply, that poorly done "research" tells the public bad information about nutrition, and people go overboard with radical diet changes.
Think of all the "fat free", "low carb" marketing. A lot of those fat free foods back in the 90's were loaded with sugar to make up for the lack of fat. Not only that, but people would binge on those snacks, thinking they were healthy.
I'm sure that's all common sense here. I'm thinking about making some major changes in my diet. I'm pretty knowledgable about nutrition & all, but coming up with meal ideas is tough. I'm actually pretty good at cooking, it's just taking the time to cook which I have a problem with. So I'm looking for quick meals that are health, basically.
One thing I think I'm going to start relying on is Amy's organic foods. I tried their vegetarian chili, expecting for it to be bland, and I was floored. It was as good or better than most meat chilis. Their food is often higher in fat & calories than most "health" food, but the more important thing is the source of those fat & calories. I think that's one of the biggest problems most people have - understanding that you should be consuming fat & calories.
So share your meal ideas, health tips, etc... NOW BITCHES!!!!
Errr... sorry, I think that was the result of my male defense mechnisms kicking in. I can't get seen talking about more "girlie" stuff for too long. It's the crushing horror of being born with a penis.

Oh, and it's also worth discussing nutritional supplements.
Multi-vitamin - The purpose of this should be obvious. I need to get a new bottle, but I'm not sure what to choose (price & quality-wise). Any suggestions?
Calcium - This one is extremely important for women because women have trouble absorbing calcium. Men can benifit too because neurons require calcium to fire.
Omega 3 fatty acids - Also vital in brain nutrition. The brain requires it, although off-hand, I forget what for.
Caffiene - I live on it, even though it's not the best thing for you. Oh well.
If I think of any more, I'll add them.

Oh, and on calcium, don't take high doses because the ability of the body to absorb calcium decreases with higher doses. In fact, the body can generally only absorb 500 mg at a time, so take multiple doses of 500 mg tablets, if you can find them. Lots of stores sell higher doses.

Ugh. Dieting just seems so silly to me. I don't understand why people fall for shit like Adkins and "lowfat" foods. Know what you're eating, and watch your portions. Easy as that.
As for vitamins- if you're going to take a multivitamin, go with a generic brand, like Equate. You get a lot for not a lot. But it's best to get your vitamins and minerals from food, not from a bottle.
I like Amy's foods, but I usually can't afford anything. :(

I know quite a bit about nutrition and am debating being a nutritionist if I find out I don't like communications. I hate how everyone's afraid of fat. Fat is good, as long as you don't have a lot of saturated fat. Almond butter = good for you. Same with carbs, it's just complex carbs are better for you, having more vitamins/minerals/lower GI index.
I do eat very healthfully and do eat some 'diet' foods, but I don't eat only them anymore.
Quick healthy meals I eat a lot:
Cereal and soymilk
Veggie burger patty with a whole wheat english muffin as a bun with cheese and lots of lettuce
Almond butter and banana sandwhiches
Huge salads with whatever I feel like having in it --tofu, beans, cheese, crumbled veggie burger, nuts, sliced apple (not all at once, haha)
Dried fruit (whenever I say I like it people are like 'omg it has sugar!!1' who cares, sugar is good, I just watch the portions)
And I just take Centrum vitamins, and and Iron pill when I can remember. I drink a lot of Milo, which is like ovaltine, because it's fortified with vitamins.

I take vitamins but most of the time now I only take them when Jason gives them to me because I hate swallowing so many pills.
I take
-two daily women's mutivitamins with folic acid so I'll be all healthy when we have kids.
-two calciums, I'm slightly lactose intolerant and i only eat cheese in small amounts unless I am having a treat, ice cream is rare for me, milk NEVER. This has helped with my bad knees quite a bit and I hurt a lot less than I did before taking calcium.
-two ginger pills to help with my extreme nausea and motion sickness. I don't want to throw up all the time anymore.
-an extra iron pill because I've known for quite a while that I was a little low on the red blood cell count and then one of my doctors had to go and confirm it.

I eat cereal for breakfast, veggies for lunch, and then healthy snacks when I'm hungry, and then whatever crap I make for dinner. Usually hot dogs, hamburger helper, corned beef, baked chicken, meatloaf, pasta, homemade pizza. But I just serve vegetables with that junk. I have about two pop's (soda) a week. I have dessert about 4 times a month.
I just eat small portions also--it took a year to really trim back faithfully, and break the habit of stuffing my face like a pig. That's paying off, I've lost 4 lbs just doing that. I like using manners again!
I eat whatever I want.

I usually eat:
- Salads with lettuce of course, carrot, green pepper, broccoli, egg, and regular dressing. Which is fine, cause I don't use a lot.
- Veggie burgers with tons of lettuce, onion, and ketchup
- Quesadillas with pepperjack cheese, onion, and green pepper
- Scrambled eggs (I eat about 4-5 eggs a week)
- Oatmeal with cinnamon sugar
- Plain pasta with olive oil, oregano, and parmesan cheese
- Plain bagel and granola cereal
- Beans and rice with tomato, green pepper, and onion
- 3-4 kiwis a week
- Bananas!
That's about it. But yesterday when I went to the store I bought some ground beef cause I was craving meat and I'm going to make chili tonight.

I pretty much require myself to make my meals consist of a protein, vegetable and starch. For instance...rice with sauteed vegetables (in olive oil - GOOD fat) and a lean piece of grilled pork or beef. I essentially chop up the meat and throw all the vegetables/rice/meat together and eat it as a medley. It's quite delicious and gives me energy for hours and hours :)

My favorite food of all time is a baked sweet potato mashed up with almond butter, orange juice, and a bit of brown sugar. It sounds wacky, but it is so good

Dieting is another reason for health problems. The starvation to low blood sugar to binging leads people to just put on weight.
Anyway, these are all good ideas. Thanks.
