I dunno. I kinda want to get this, but I don't know that I can justify spending the money.

On the one hand, I dug FFX, arguably more than FFVII, even (FFVI still kicks ass, though). And I'm curious about the new style of the combat system 'n shit. Plus, it'd give me something to do when I don't feel like doing other stuff.

On the other hand, even used, it's still a fair amount of money, considering I'm reasonably broke. And I don't play near as much as I used to. And even IF I'm going to get a game, there's also LoZ: Twilight of the Spirits (or whatever) to consider.

So I dunno. Anybody? How was it? Shite, or decent?

Basically, it's nothing like any of the previous games. I've only played the beginning so far though, so I can't really say anything. The battle system takes some getting used to. I've heard that it ultimately becomes pretty useless towards the end of the game; you can defeat enemies without touching a single button almost.

My gripe with the battle system is that it's neither completely turn-based nor completely in real-time; it's just somewhere in between. You hit a button and then you have to wait until your time meter fills up before the character executes the action. I'd rather have it be something more like Kingdom Hearts.

If you can get over that, the game itself is alright. I can't seem to get into it though. I guess I just don't care for the story or the characters very much.

Ok finally got the game lat week. sadly i have only been able to play for four hours total but it has left a very good impression on me. It is different but not to the point of not feeling like a final fantasy game. The battle system is pretty interesting and with the option to switch between active and wait battles can be fought pretty quickly or you can take your time like in older ff
games.

Making money seems to be a challenge and the liscence board is scary to look at but i can't wait to play more of this game this weekend !

I have this game now and Im not really all that impressed with it. Girlfriend and buddy seem to enjoy it but I think it just blows. Something about it just sucks, ive been enjoying GTA:San Andreas and Gran Turismo 4 much more.

Ok, starting rethink my original opinion on this game. Its not too bad, Im already level 31 and using a samurai sword which combos every so often. My characters are Ultimo!

Well i'm only level 12 right now. i only have limited time to play once or twice a week because i'm a new daddy.

But i love the combat in this game. I set up gambits for everybody even the party leader and i interupt when i want to change something. I've been plowing through guys pretty fast. i suspect that will change when i get further into the game.

The only gripe i have is that if you have a character with long range weapons you really don't see much of them when you are fighting as they stand far away from the target.

Right now Im lvl 41. I have a few gripes with the game but Im still thoroughly enjoying it. 1st gripe- Characters dont change appearance when you change armor. In this day and age they should already know that we(the gamers) love customization. 2nd gripe- the game feels rushed at times. 3rd gripe- There is no world map like FF7, FF3 and such. Overall its sweet though.

Battle System is just awful...wtf.

You can change the Battle System, right?

I saved the game when I saw the first Save Crystal and turned it off.

Yeah the battle system in that game is diffrent, but its very similar to FFXI. Give it some time it might grow on you.

I don't know, man. It reminds me of the battle system in Tales of Symphonia but those were much better.

The game's pretty good. I'm about 5 hours into it now. Sucks you can't pick up Gil when defeating enemies in normal battles.

This game was alright. It was a 6/10 at best. I still haven't finished it yet, and i probably never will (considering the fact that i just sold my PS2 and the memory card for it as well). The game is well over 100 hours long (i think i was at 110), yet the story is mediocre. The hunts just get boring after a while, and you can't even buy any cool spells until the very end of the game! The Espers are lame too, for the most part, because they're so weak and most enemies kill them in 2-3 hits, which, combined with the amount of MP you have to expend on summoning them, makes it pointless to summon them at all. The only good Esper(s) really are Zalera, probably some others, i never bothered getting more than 8.

:\ It's just kind of lame, in my opinion. I was waiting nearly three years for this game to finally hit the shelves and when it finally does, i get this....

It's definitely not 5, 7, or 8 (the best ones in my book). Versus XIII will kick ass though. :D

Suede

eh..I had a "ring" equipped to Accessories that reduces your Magick to 0..how lame.

I'm not liking the License feature.

K. So I finally got around to getting this. Been playing a good part of the day -- I just had my arse handed to me on a platter by Judge Ghis while trying to escape the Leviathan after rescuing Ashe.

So far, I'm kind of liking it.

The story is intriguing. So far it's just kind of building, so I'll have to see where it goes, precisely, but it's held my attention/curiosity thus far. I'm intrigued by the connections to other FF games, too -- that it takes place in Ivalice (and other things, like the Draclau Laboratory somebody mentioned at some point) refer back to FFT, but Magicite was an FF6 thing. Hm.

The combat is... well, I'm still getting used to it. The nuances of it have a pretty steep learning curve, given the freedom you have to juggle around your characters and what not, right in the heat of things. But I like that it's different from previous FFs while still retaining some of the flavour of the ATB system.

The license thing is kind of weird, but it's a logical progression from the sphere grid in FFX, really. Plus it adds kind of an interesting dimension, and it actually allows for a nicely balanced dilemma -- you can have either a bunch of well-rounded, but slow-developing characters, or ones that get access to good equipment/spells quicker, but are more highly specialized.

Further reports as events warrant.

I still havent got it yet, which surprises everybody really. I am far too busy to have my life taken away from me yet, but I will get it one of these days. Maybe when I move to Prague.

I just started playing this recently. While I don't think it's all that bad, I really dislike how you can't explore the world like you could in the previous FF games. There's certain parts where all you do is walk up a narrow path and fight the same line up of "fiends," every two seconds. Really annoying.

Narcissistic Nihilist

I hear it is just like all FF games. You can't explore the whole world until you get on the airship towards the end.

Robert
06-19-2007, 09:52 AM
Well, I'm maybe about 25 hours in on FF12, and it doesn't have an overworld map.

You can however take airships to almost any place you've ever been, and teleport to any teleport stone you've touched before.

That is pretty standard FFing to me.

You are still way off a fifth into the game at the very least. You wont have an overworld map for a LOOOOONG time yet.

Damn. Whoever said this was a long game seriously wasn't kidding. I like that though. Short games have their place, but sometimes they seem over too quickly -- like I can whiz through FF7 so fast now...

I'm about 30-odd hours in m'self -- currently in the Highwastes, on my way to infiltrate the Draclau Laboratory to destroy the Dusk Shard. But I'm taking a moment to get some better equipment and take care of some Level III hunts.

The money management in this game is goddamn tough. I mean, you can get a decent haul by selling loot, but you have to buy EVERYTHING, and it's hard to prioritize.

Still enjoying it though. Whoever said they didn't like the story -- admittedly, I've not seen the whole thing yet, but it's keeping my interest. If anything, it's a bit more subtle than some other ones in some respects. Like the superhuman strength that was controlling Judge Bergan -- that seems like a pretty big thing, but they're introducing it slowly. And I'm still not sure what Larsa's gonna do, or what crawled up Vayne's ass, or where Basch's brother's loyalties lie, etc.

And I like the way the map is set out -- in that it's like FF10 in how you move from area to are, but it's less linear. In that one, you kinda had to follow the route north, there wasn't really anywhere else you COULD go. In this one, you're going all over the place, and you technically CAN go anywhere you want (though it may result in a serious ass-kicking).

No really, it doesn't have an overworld map.

Yeah, there is a map, but you don't walk from town to town like say, Final Fantasy 7.

Yeah, a lot of games are like that. Makes sense.

What struck me about this game is that I won. I usually don't win FF. Usually I get up to the last battle, and lose. I think it was a little too easy. Not that I'm complaining about winning. I think I won FF8, actually, but that's it.

Nar -- Hiroshi Mingawa and Hiroshi Sakimoto.

Which makes sense, since they worked on FFT, and this is set in the same world.
