View Full Version : Can someone explain to me why Halo is so revered?

I think it's a fantastic game with an awesome multi-player mode, but it's really not anything that hasn't been done before. Online multiplayer? Hey, great... but I've played FPS multiplayers for 10 years, and I've seen better designs than what Halo has to offer.

Then there is the single player mode (or co-op). Master Chief? It's one letter away from sounding like a head cook at Applebee's. The only name which can beat it in the "we didn't even try department" is Doom's "Space Marine". While the presentation is great, the plot & characters are fairly dry. Not to mention a lack of interesting enemies. I’ve only played the original Halo’s Campaign mode, so perhaps it’s improved.

So Halo fans, what am I missing out on? I admit I haven’t played the game thoroughly, but from what I’ve seen, it’s fairly well done FPS, but nothing spectacular. I don’t see what the level of hype is about. PROVE ME WRONG!

I’m not trying to knock the game, I just haven’t seen anything that other FPS haven’t done yet.

Well the 1st one the campain co-op was great and the second's campain was better but had a gay cut short ending. The multiplayer is really where its at. I dont know its wierd but I have been playing that game halo 2 (still do since it came out Novemeber 9th 2004. It's pretty damn good if its appeal has lasted all this time to me usually I get bored even with the best games after a month or 2 or even 3 or 4 depending on how good it is. But Xbox live's multiplayer is kinda lame with Matchmaking I like to play on Xbconnect and its free. www.xbconnect.com

Wow, I'll have to mention that to my friend. I think he still pays for X-box live.

I can certainly see Halo's lasting appeal, at least with the multiplayer, but plenty of FPS are the same way.

Apparently, Gamespy agrees with me (http://archive.gamespy.com/articles/september03/25overrated/index17.shtml). They rated it #10 on the most overrated games.

I don't think its over rated if its the most played game on xbox live since the day it came out.(Like I said I still play it) But I won't lie a lot of other FPS are really good to and don't get enough credit exp: Far cry, Battlefield 2, Star Wars Battlefront II, etc

I definitely think it's up there as among the best of the X-box, it's just the level of praise that I don't get. A lot of magazine/websites give it a 9.8-10, and rant about how it's revolutionary, if not an all together perfect game. It's great & all, but not that level of greatness.

One thing I don't understand, and this is just an observation, not anything bad... how do people in Halo multiplayer end up being superhuman? There is a 65% of me getting destroyed, and I'm pretty damn good at FPSs. I just took on 6 bots, all on the same team, in James Bond: Nightfire, and won 35-0. I just don't understand how it's possible!

I've never played it.

Last FPS I bought was "Black" for Playstation. Not bad, but I thought the weapons range was a little limited. Can't fault the graphics.

Playing CPUs and actual people are diffrent CPU will always act a certain way and never get smarter but people think of new things to do that is why you might tend to lose.

I think I largely get snaped. Usually I can't tell where the shots are even coming from, which would most likely be from long-range sniper rifles. Perhaps it's just because I don't play Halo enough to become an expert at it. When I used to play Jedi Knight & Jedi Knight II in multiplayer, I'd usually be near the top, if not the top. I guess I just don't like to lose.

FPS can be among my favorite genres, at least when they're done right. However, I say, "BRING BACK THE ADVENTURE GAMES!!!!!!!111111". I can't wait for the new Sam n' Max series.

Unless it scares the hell out of me, like Doom 3 months ago (yeah, I took a while getting to play it), FPS bore me.

well, I myself have played the bloody shit out of the game and still have fun with it on a pretty regular basis.... and by the way guys the storyline would make a hell of a lot more sense if you read the books. its not that you have to if you want to understand, it just helps

We play it together about 5 times a week. It's beautiful, the action is great, and the cut scenes are interesting, the dialogue is hilarious! (Do I owe you money?) It doesn't have a lot of bad angles or problems like some games.

I still get caught up in it, even though we've played both games a hundred times. We do some levels over and over to perfect them.

I think it's rubbish, one of the better console shooters but it has nothing on most PC shooters.

PC Shooters are dead! Dead I tells ya! It is the end of days for them! They have gone the way of the Dodo!

Seriously though when was the last time a great widely talked about PC shooter came out?

Oh, but any FPS will be better on a top spec pc - mouse+keyboard control and higher resolution gfx.

So getting all that would it be cheaper than having a game console?
