ITT, we name our favorite figure skaters!

I am fond of Canadian Kurt Browning, he just seems like such a happy guy, the sort who's always been meant for leaping and twirling around :smelly:

I also like Surya Bonaly, the French back-flipping bad-girl! She always got screwed over by the judges, but I found her more impressive and fun to watch than all the dainty little asian and russian things the judges always gave higher scores to.

Well, we get very cold winters and snow/ice storms here sometimes in KS. Though the last couple winters have been unseasonably warm and rainy...anyway, figure skating was my favorite televised sport when I was a kid :D

Whats the difference between ice skating and figure skating or are they two names for the same thing?

Figure skating is all fancy like, with turns flips etc.


Ice skating is just skating around in a circle and crashing into things

ice skating is just a general term for any kind of skating on ice. Figure skating is basically the broad term for competitions based on artistic and technical skill, and usually includes music and gay costumes :D

What I always found funny about the world of figure skating is that participants in Olympic skating and other worldwide skating competitions are considered "amateurs", and when skaters go "professional" it means they've pretty much retired from the competitive skating circuit and most of their skating will be in entertainment shows and mock-competitions. It's kind of the opposite of every other sport, where "professional" level is what everyone aspires to be.

I only watch figure skating because I get to laugh at their misfortune when they fall and destroy the MONTHS of training they've done leading up to the event.

I like watching speed skating waaaaay better.

My last ex girl liked figure skating so I got to watch it all the time. :boring:

I only really watch it when the winter Olympics come on, and I am always amazed at how the commentators (who seem to usually be ex-skaters) criticize bits of the routines when they all look pretty good to me. I guess it's kinda like gymnastics, diving, etc. in that small things make huge differences.

yeah they're all Asians but they can make me cry. Unlike Shizuka Arakawa - she won but eh I'm not crazy about her. I'm more about the artistic expression bit.

I have to admit that Slutskaya is fun and impressive, too, I do like her. And how beautiful is that Finnish chick...Kiira Korpi? I know I'm not usually big on blondes but not only is she beautiful, she can also move people with her skating.

And word on the Kurt Browning. He's my fave guy skater too :)
