I think they're right in saying that this is the best England squad for a very long time, but I still don't think we can win it - we just don't have the mentality for it. We've got enough winners in the team - players like Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard and Terry will fight and fight for their clubs, but when it comes to internationals they don't seem to be able to produce when it really matters.
I really hope they prove me wrong though...

England I think could go as far as the semi's with luck at the knockout draw's. It would be a major, very unlikely upset to not get through the group stages.
What is it with fucking N. Irish, Scottish and Welsh people hating England, in this, the 21st Century. Your fucking great great great great etc grandads couldnt put up a decent fight all those centuries ago, so fucking get over it. ha. I crack myself up.

Well, Brazil will win it. Anything else would be a huge upset. They outclass all other teams if you look att pure class in the squad. They could probably field two different teams that would both be contenders for the World Cup.
I'm sure Germany will go far too, despite not having a very good team on paper. Germany ALWAYS go far, and with the home field advantage, they will be a very dangerous team. Spain, France, Argentina, Holland and Italy are other dangerous teams of course.
I don't think England will be one of the teams fighting for the title. Now with Rooney probably being out, I don't think they have enough world-class forwards in the squad. The midfield is impressive on paper of course. But they do seem to lack a strong defensive midfielder. The four midfielders that will start the matches, are all pretty eager to go forward. That could be a problem.
I'm hoping that my team Sweden will do well too of course. And I'm pretty sure we will at least go through from the group stage. But as usual before a big tournament, we get no respect...:grump:

I filled in a wallchart sometime last year with my predictions, and I was really confident about them all, but now I can't find it and I can't remember who was going to win! Yikes.
The England thing I find difficult, on one hand I hate all the people who don't usually care about football going on about it (and referring to the team as "we", gosh that annoys me) and I always get pissed off about how rubbish Scotland are, but on the other hand I've lived here since I was 2 and I feel a bit tight for wishing England wouldn't win, but I still don't want them to. The hype in the English media over the England football is over the top. It's is expected that they are going to want England to win, but alot of the newspapers (and tv shows) go on about us winning it way too much. So the hype eventually gets in the way of just enjoying it. But to anyone with any ounce of sense, it's obvious that we won't win it. We do have a strong team, but it lacks any sort of spark.
Quarter/semi Finals.
The thing is they put such a huge importance on one or two players, who invariably get injured not long before the thing starts, so everyone has a good excuse should they lose.

I bought 120 cans of Red Stripe today in preparation!
I put a £15 bet on Portugal winning it a couple of weeks ago. I doubt they will, but the odds were fantastic, and their strikeforce is amazing at the moment. Pauleta's gonna score a few I reckon.
I think England have a 25% chance of winning the thing, but I STILL cannot understand why:
It is a common view that Gary Neville is better than Jamie Carragher.
Why the fuck Carrick isn't in the first 11. His passing is superior to most of the other England players.
Lennon thought it good to stop when confronted by Jamaican defenders, and pass back down the pitch. ffs, these are the games you should be taking people on!!!!
Let's face it. Owen isn't sharp, chances are he wont last many of the games anyway. Crouch can be fantastic for a couple of mins per game, but overall he's average, and history shows teams with ridiculously tall strikers win nothing. Gerrard is consistently played in positions he has little experience in, and him and Lampard don't mix well.
It's a shame, on paper, England have the best midfield in the world, they just can't mix like the Brazilians.
So yeah, Portugal, England, Brazil, and watch out for Ukraine.
I STILL cannot understand why:
It is a common view that Gary Neville is better than Jamie Carragher.
I'm not sure it is a common view, but the simple fact is that Gary Neville is an excellent right back and he doesn't let England down. If you can name a genuinely poor game by the Neviller for England I'd be very surprised. Carragher is a great defender, but he's better as a centre back. Neville is an out-and-out full-back, and he's the best we have for that position. On top of which, he and Beckham work very well together on the right.
Why the fuck Carrick isn't in the first 11. His passing is superior to most of the other England players.
I'm pretty sure Carrick would have been in the starting 11 for the Paraguay game had it not been for two factors:
1) He was poor against Belarus. Like really very poor. Gave the ball away far too often, unlike Carragher who did a much better job in the deep midfield position against Hungary.
2) Crouch has been excellent. We might have gone 4-5-1, but with Crouch performing so well Sven's going for 2 up front. Carrick is not superior to either Lampard and Gerrard, so he doesn't make the team.
I like Carrick a lot, and prior to the tournament I would have picked him over Lampard, as I'm not convinced by Gerrard and Lampard as a pairing. He'll probably still feature at some point, but he'll probably play a bigger part in the next 2 or 3 tournaments.
Lennon thought it good to stop when confronted by Jamaican defenders, and pass back down the pitch. ffs, these are the games you should be taking people on!!!!Yep, that baffled me too.

It was certianly entertaining as far as first days go, and if we see any goal half as good as Lahm's or Frings', then we are in for a treat. Definately not a day for defenders.

No, it was shocking. Lahm's strike was unreal. I know it's a cliche to talk about the new world cup ball, but this one seems pretty slippery and unpredictable.
Nak Nak
06-09-2006, 09:08 PM
yeah Frings' goal was good but I remember watching it and thinking "he didn't strike it that cleanly", and on the replay you can see that the keeper almost gets to it but it swerves at the last moment (despite Lawro's idiotic "the keeper had no chance, NO chance. I would LOVE it, etc.."). to me, it seems as though that strike should have ended up closer to the centre than the left of the net. :\
if we're talking about the ball, Lahm's was a bit different because he had possession and he was cutting in from the left. so he was shooting across the goal - looking for inswing - and at a degree of pace, whereas Frings hit it first time and it swung away.
I get what you mean - he just hammers it and somehow it spins away. I don't think it was intentional.
Lahm's strike was definitely placed.

I think the results so far are proving, just like last time, that the standard of international football is so poor these days that there is very little between teams. How do you think a poor team like England have a chance? On the plus side, this makes for an open, entertaining tournament, but on the other side, the quality has been atrocious. There are no great teams out there. Argentina are the best, but even they have major flaws.
Its great for tiny countries like Trinbago, but that is the only good for football that that the WC does.
Look at the major international countries:
Argentina - Supremely talented and can cut teams apart at will. Unfortunately, that will seems to have a will of its own (Sorry for all the wills, Will) and they dont seem to know how to control it. Far too complacent at times.
Brazil - Almost as talented. Far too busy trying to be the Harlem bloody Globetrotters to realise that teamwork is not about making the fanciest pass you can. Naive defence.
Italy - Injury-ridden, paranoid and far too much of a confidence team. Solid as fuck, but will struggle to score unless everything goes their way.
Germany - Young, vibrant attack, solid in midfield, but a defence in name only and a very dodgy keeper between the sticks. Always going to be vunerable.
Czech Republic - The perennial dark horses. Sometimes they just get it SOOO right and they are the most amazing team to watch, but like Argentina cant hold it together all the time. Too much reliance on Nedved, who at 34, has proved this season he is far too injury-prone and unreliable.
Holland - Weak team by their high standards, still got a lot there, but are so self-destructive, I dont know how they could pull it out all the way through.
Spain - One of these days, they are going to destroy everybody, but they never seem to care. The only country to really understand that international football is a load of tosh. Barely take any fans with them and Madrid fans refuse to support a team with Barca players and vice versa. I'm gonna tip them because they will do it one year and surely even they cant fuck up against a dull Ukraine, entertaining but naive Saudis, and a declining Tunisia. Dont hold your breath though.
If you are interested, Will, I fancy you lot to do rather well, then fuck up against Croatia and just miss out, but anything is possible.
I think it's amusing you haven't included England in the major international countries. They really did play pretty crap this morning. Ashley Cole is a joke.
I'd like to see Australia at least score some decent goals. I'm not holding my breath for them making the second round but it'd be nice.

Why would I include England? They have only twice got past the last 8 EVER! Certianly not one of the top contenders. Oh England were as dismal as ever. They were just very fortunate that they came up against an equally shit side. Still they never looked like scoring. They needed someone else to do it for them. You certainly wont be getting the winners from Group B, which competes with Group D for the weakest group there.
I think you will get your wish. You might even just get through and play Italy or the Czechs.

I think the ref got it right for Japans goal. Sure the player went into Schwarzer, but that was only cos he got pushed by Craig Moore so it wasnt a foul. Either way, Schwarzer should have had it and made a right cock up. There was no reason to disallow it.

Oh give us a break. Only our second final appearance and all. Just because you're pessimisitic about England's chances doesn't mean everyone else can't have a bit of enthusiasm.
Whatever you want to say about the game being fairly even, we clearly dominated the second half. We did have 6 times as many shots on goal etc.
Over-enthusiasm is no excuse for distorting facts. Japan put as much into the game, had a blatant penalty turned down, and were very unlucky to lose. To say you deserved to win, is quite clearly and blatantly, wrong. You got very lucky. End of story.

Not including the fact there was a clearance off the line both against the tiniest nation ever to be in a world cup and again tonight. Sweden also hit the bar twice.
It must be comforting for Englands fans to know that they can fortunately hold on to a draw when being pissed on by Sweden, a country with the population of London.

No one said I did own the boards, but thanks for your moronic leap of logic and reasoning anyway. I find it rather a bizzare concept that a human could actually live on a messageboard in cyberspace. Hmmmm, physics isnt your strong suit either. Ah yes, the bookies. Those wonderful people who make odds on many , many factors. Only one of which being the likelihood of winning. Odds compilers factor in many other concerns, such as likelihood of attraction, and indeed, England is a nation of retards and so many people, like always will back England, this forces the price to be unnaturally short.
Having worked within the betting industry for over 4 years, this is right up my street. So basically, the only people who had them as second favourites were ENGLISH bookmakers who had a vested interest in keeping their most people bet at a low price. Unlucky knobsack, you have been blown out of the water YET again.
So you cant do maths, know fuck all about football etc etc and now you have no concept of physics, odds compling and probability either.
Well a lot of that is maths, so we shouldnt be surprised that you screwed up so royally.
Yup, a clearance off the line, a pen, and two hits on the woodwork. Does this make you were lucky? yes. Does this mean you should have lost? yes. Does this mean you got absolutely pissed on while the rest of the world laughs at you and your pathetic country? yes. Does this make you a typical englishscum, a complete and utter embarrassment? yes.
Ok, Im glad you find the fact you are so shit you have to ride on the coat-tails of fortune because thats all you have, so comforting. I find just it amusing. :D

That's less than relevant. With you being the one that moans about how much you hate everything.
Have you read this by the way? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/5101184.stm
So some England hooligans fight with the other country's hooligans ... but I don't think they attack kids. Anyway as you may notice it points out how it's racist to target someone because they're English ... just like it's racist if I targetted someone because they were Scottish, Irish, Black Asian or White. See? So not only are you a loser who's entire life will consist of arguing with people on message boards and then dying, you're a racist loser as well. It's kind of like those people who vote BNP in elections ... you just immediately know they're clueless and should be ignored.
Wrong, its entirely relevant. It shows that reading your posts makes me feel better about myself. I'm saying we have finally found you a purpose in life! It's me being kind.
So what about the article? Some England hooligans will attack kids. If it wasn't for the fact I knew you didn't have a brain, I could be disgusted at you defending them. So some idiots were really stupid and wore England tops in Scotland. So what?
Newflash, dickwad: I didnt touch them, so I am not responsible ergo I am not the racist. Your logic has failed you again. SO, not only are you a loser who's entire life will consist of starting arguments on message boards, but you're always wrong too. Its kind of like those ignorant England fans who are so arrogant they cant see they are being laughed at...you just immediately know they're clueless and should ridiculed.
Lets suspend reality for a moment and say should I be ignored? Time for a lesson, Ignoring someone does not equate to responding to their posts. But then, you are an idiot.

Ronaldo is still a quality player. He's just blatantly unfit and probably doesn't care a whole lot anymore. He'll soon be the World Cup's all time top goalscorer and will has already overtaken Pele meaning he's pretty much a Brazillian legend. A change of club would do him good - everyone knows fitness isn't the most important thing to coaches and fans of Real Madrid. Send him to the Premiership, that'd get him into shape.

Well, he still has his finishing + some of his skills - but the speed, agility and touch of a much older player. I don't know what he looked like towards the end of the Spanish season, but he is definitely overweight.
Should he play instead of Adriano? Well, he scored two - but Adriano scored one in a more meaningful game. On the negative side, Adriano himself looks a little sluggish + heavy + generally unimpressive.

Well i think i'm right, therefore you can't watch La Liga very often. Seriously though, the Premiership is so much faster than the Spanish or the Italian league. You get more time on the ball, and those leagues are home to some of the most technically gifted players in the world who don't need to do an amazing amount of running, who will beat defenders with skill more often than pace. Beckham was known in England for his freekicks, but for Real he gets most recognition for his phenomenal workrate.

I never said it wasn't technical, skillful etc, or even that it wasn't the best league in the world (though i don't agree). But the Premiership is known for being faster and yeah i'd say more physical. Doesn't have to mean it's better, just a lot different. Foreign imports have changed this somewhat, but the English game is still based around strength and pace.

I sort of took you wrongly, by physical I thought you meant athleticism in general. It is true that there are fewer thugs in la liga and not so many Blackeye Rovers or Bolton Bashers style teams (though there are some) but the pace of La Liga can easily match that of the prem. It's a fairly common misconception that the pace of the game is much slower over there, probably because a possession based style is popular. That doesn't mean that the players are any less fit or work less. Try playing against a good possession team and it'll tire you out more than an english style team that loses the ball in midfield easily. Beckham's work rate is phenomenal, yes, phenomenally poor.
Real have plenty of hard workers on their team, just like the prem has many fat players, haha. Would you say that English teams had better fitness than La Liga teams in euopean competition this year? Chelsea were able to bully Barca physically? Or even Arsenal? Middlesborough - Seville? Fitness is probably at equally superhuman standards for both leagues.
An example that completely encapsulates my argument:
La Liga has Ronaldo
the Prem has Viduka

Well only about Ballack, because he is a mercenary (although I remember when he got booked last world cup and would miss the final then went on to score the winner and take his team through, rather than crying like a pathetic baby like a certain Englishman did in the same situation), but Germany were excellent today. Just as well England got lucky and held on against Sweden, becasue Germany would have destroyed them today. Its been odd with the crowd, because the biggest football fans in Germany dont really support the national side, but I was delighted to see them through, even with that dirty diving cunt Larsson getting the penalty, and I was praying for him to miss! :)
I dunno about losing to Argentina, Germany have been one of the top 3 teams in the tournament and its a shame that the top 4 teams will (are due to) play each other in the quarter finals. The semi-finals look to be a mis-match as whoever wins between Germany v Argentina and (the provisional) Spain v Brazil will almost certainly be the finallists.

What a game. Marquez was phenomenal. Terrible refereeing. Heinze should've been off. I suppose that the game would have suffered if he'd been sent off, but it was the wrong decision. Messi's goal should've stood, Mexico should have had a penalty. In fact, the mistakes kind of even themselves out, since Torrado should've been sent off too.

That's not what happened. The ref decided Torrado made a foul while he hadn't done anything wrong. Another Mexican protested against this and that's why the other Mexican got carded.
So the only mistake the ref made was saying Torrado made a foul. He did not card the wrong person.

I put on the SuicideGirls website (pity I cant link, only available to members) that England would win 1-0 via an own goal. I was pretty much spot on. Keeper error, own goal, not much difference.
I also said Germany would destroy Sweden, that Argentina v Mexico would be very close and that Holland would just about get the better of Portugal. So my predictions have been excellent so far.
But yeah, dismal, boring, lifeless. In what has been quite an exciting party of a world cup, England have been the vomit that misses the toilet bowl. Still, they have luck on their side, and thats quite a strength. Just a shame its the only positive they have.
