Feeling Brackish

I just bought Solaris by Stanislaw Lem. I've never read it, but I saw the Andrei Tarkovsky film based on it and thought it was interesting. So anyway, I finally get the book, and the cover has George Clooney on it kissing the main female character. Now I've never seen the new version of Solaris. I've heard it's terrible, and I really don't give a shit about George Clooney and I don't want him on my book cover! I really hate when the publishing companies do that when a movie based on a book is about to come out. I understand the marketing reasons behind it, but I still hate it. Another book that comes to mind is Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? By Philip K. Dick. The version I have says, Blade Runner really big at the top with Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? in parentheses beneath it in small print. It also has a picture of Harrison Ford on the cover. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Blade Runner, but it is so different than the book that it's hard to even compare them. Not to mention the fact that the term, "Blade Runner" is never even used in the book and has no business being on the cover.

I hate that too. I also hate seeing the movie of a book I enjoyed because then my imagined character dies and the movie star's face replaces it.

So true! I like to check out movies of books I've read but accepting the new interpretations of the characters can kindof be a drag.
