ooooooooooh, i think i know what you're thinkin...
Wiki says that Conor helped w/ the making of Criteria's album En Garde.
it also says...
The CD contains a hidden track in zero time (go to track 1 and then rewind) and features a song by Team Rigge, the lyrics are response to The Show is the Rainbow's song, "Up a Creek without a Saddle," which disses Conor Oberst.
that song (as well as 3 other Team Rigge songs) can be found in the Team Rigge Thread (http://www.blamonet.com/vb/showthread.php?t=138351)

Here's a treat for you guys.
Easily the rarest Simon Joyner song. Not too sure why this track was left off of the Beautiful Losers compilation album. This song is called "Song to the Killers" and was on a Ba Da Boom zine compilation. It's actually a collaboration with Azuza Plane, but I really think of it more as a Joyner song. Enjoy, it's up there as one of my favored Joyner songs, it's sparse but cuts into me like all his best stuff.
http://www.mediafire.com/?e71gbjyt29w
Jon - That's easily one of the best Joyner songs i've heard, it's up there with Joy Division, in my opinion. And i decided to join!

Smashmouth - Some Of You Will Be Hermits
http://www.mediafire.com/?tmg9mn1m0o4
this doesn't have track titles. if anyone has this info, please let me know
Dilly Dally is up next.
Well this is ironic. I actually have a copy of the real smashmouth cassette. I have a somewhat irritating financial situation right now and thus I'm selling a lot of my saddle creek collectibles... I'm going to be selling this cassette, probably on ebay, but since you guys already have the music and are into it, I'd be totally willing to sell it to any of you over some random guy on ebay.
Let me know; I can send you pictures as proof that I'm not scamming you or anything. I can also give you the tracklist when I get back from work tonight.

This is what i'd do.
download the program audacity. it's open source and free. you will need the lame.enc.dll file, that's really easy to find too.
get a regular audio cable. boths ends are male headphone jack size and you can get them for less then 5 bucks.
use a cassette player with a headphone jack, connect the cable to the headphone jack and the line in jack in the back of your computer.
record in audacity, test out the volume and stuff before letting the whole album record. once you get it perfect I suggest you record the whole thing, or at least each side as one long wav file. then you can break up the songs, export and mp3 (make you sure you check in the preferences and raise the bit rate, it's automatically set to 128, and if we want a good quality we really should go for 320).
if you've got any other questions, let me know.
OK thanks a bunch for the detailed instructions. I'm pretty busy right now with work and such, but converting this cassette is extremely important to me so I will work on this as soon as possible and I'll post any questions I have along the way. Thanks!
Its funny, I have water and special treatment also (as well as the two conor comp cassettes) and they all are reasonably well put together with good construction of the actual tape, yet soundtrack is the most homely and pathetic looking cassette I've ever seen. Its plane white with the word "oberst" on one side and "soundtrack" on the other, both written messily with a marker of some kind, presumably written by conor.
oberstthegod
06-28-2008, 09:38 AM
well if it's an edition of 50 I am sure he put them together himself. I don't think soundtrack was a sing eunuch's release right?
also if you want to send me the raw files of each side i will do the work of spliting it up and cleaning it up a bit, i don't mind.
also i have the you and what army comp. what other comp are you talking about?
as for cassettes, i have water, special treatment, soundtrack, you and what army, and as yet no title... that latter of which has the bright eyes cover of "metal firecracker." Also, soundtrack was one sing eunuch's... and I take back what I said before, if you have you and what army than soundtrack looks very similar to that.
by the way just a little bit of info i found out on my adventurous hunting down of these cassettes (i still have sine sierra and the color gray left but regardless) I found out that water was made in two varieties, one was printed on a yellow paper and one was printed on a blue paper. I have the blue one, and I have two friends that have the yellow one, so I want to say the blue i more rare, but I have no idea... but I do know water was an edition of 300.
and yes, i will very likely send you the raw files for soundtrack, because as is I am already confused and if you could do the final touch-ups that would wonderful.

yeah i think the as yet no title tape can still be ordered from unread, and it has other awesome musicians like Chauchat, and a really early recording of a David Dondero song under a different band name!
my you and what army tape looks very professional. the paper is sturdy and better than most indie/diy cassette. But many of these labels dub the tapes themselves and if they run out of the original inserts copy them, so that might be the case for what you have.
yeah just record into audacity and make sure the levels are good, it's not too quiet but not staticy and overpowered and too loud. then click save project as into a seperate folder (it will be a data folder and an aup file and maybe another file too) zip that folder with all the files inside and megaload it or something (it will be large).
oh and thank you for the smashmouth track titles, that's been bugging me before a while. you don't happen to have the "we'd rather be flying" album (track list only) as well?
yeah that must be the case because i actually got multiple as yet no title cassettes for really cheap.
my you and what army cassette is a step above soundtrack, but not by too much. Its a white cassette with this blue tape stuck to it rather poorly and it is hand written on the tape messily "you + what army?"
yep and regarding all of your instructions for this cassette, i have the necessary parts of your messages printed out and taped to the door of my room so hopefully this will work out :) ...I am really terrified though that i might, in some freak accident, break the cassette, which thereafter suicide would be the only option.
and sorry, i actually don't have the tracklist we'd rather be flying :(

I tried ripping my as yet no title cassette in audacity but I couldn't get it right. it was either too quiet w/ tons of tape hiss, or too loud causing terrible vibrations.
Killian
06-30-2008, 12:11 PM
i've been meaning to do this one. i use my four track to transfer cassettes and it's a little easier. I recommend everyone buy this tape, it's so cheap and has a rare bright eyes song. but I'll consider posting this when I do convert it to mp3.

It was released on Paper Garden Records, which is slowly by slowly going out of business, i don't think its available on vinyl, but its an awesome record.
And when i saw them live a few months ago they played mostly all new songs. in fact i wonder if the new record is out, i know they have a 7inch out, which was sold out at the show, but its available on itunes i believe. i haven't heard it.

YAY Guess what I have for you all? I finally have my Soundtrack cassette ripped and ready to be enjoyed :) I haven't even listened to it intently yet because I wanted to share it with you all first. In my mind its basically the mysteriously unrevealed bright eyes album because the songs on soundtrack were all recorded during the same time as the collection.
and by the way... the quality is like a gazillion times better than the version that we all have. Plus whoever upped those songs screwed up the song names rather brutally in some cases. But without further adieu!
Conor Oberst: The Soundtrack To My Movie (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=57QA711U)
also by the way, it was my friend who named everything on his laptop as I read it to him off the cassette and apparently he's retarded and spelled "conor" with two damn n's. argh... and "shoegaze" is kind of an inside joke between the two of us... easy to fix however...

i don't know about it being ted, sounds nothing like the polecat stuff, plus ted was full into Lullaby by this point....sort of reminds me of some of the TK Slowdown and Comm. Venus vocals.
does the person you actually have the tape have any idea? anything mentioned in the insert?
OK the insert is about the most impossible to read thing ever. The text is basically identical in color to the picture behind it and its in tiny text as well. To the best of my ability some helpful quotes form the insert are:
*a whole bunch I'm skipping* "Thanks especially to Clint who played drums on "flying J" and "show me how..." and to Ted who sang on that as well as ???? [its something like Koua? or Jona? or Koon? good GOD I have no idea] Fremission (?) who sang on "Animal Prints" and lent me his mixing board and to Code Vermillion who played bass guitar on "Floodlights" and VIC who played lead guitar on "Oh, Tired Eyes" and thanks to dear Todd who played harmonica (???) on that song (??), sang on "the halcyon days" and along with my father helped mix." *a whole bunch more I'm skipping*
holy crap that took me like 20 minutes and used a lot of process of elimination with words... which unfortunately is not too helpful when deciphering an odd first name. So basically I have no idea about who's on animal prints. At least we know its not Tim, Todd or Ted. The only thing I can read for sure is that the last name ends in "mission" although I'm pretty sure its "Fremission" and the first name looks like 4 letters but the 3rd letter could potentially be two letters I suppose, making it a 5 letter word. The first letter looks like a "K" except it is completely undecipherable whether or not the part of the K that points to 1:00 (upper right) even exists. I dunno, does the last name ring a bell to anyone?
and when does todd sing on halcyon days?

I just downloaded the improved version of Soundtrack (which is amazing, thanks so much again!), and I just wanted to clarify something: When it loads in my itunes, the song comes up "Flying 3," are we sure it's really not "Flying J?"
Thanks guys

I've never seen bright eyes. But I do remember hearing Letting of the Happiness the first day it came out and have been a fan ever since. I hardly ever go to shows though maybe like 3 a year.
holy crap, that's so intense! He was basically non-existant outside of omaha at that time. I remember when my sister got fevers when it came out and I just rather conspicuously overheared the music and got obsessed with the calender hung itself as a wee-baby 11 year old which started the ball rolling... haha, I remember writing my college application essay on how conor oberst has single-handedly sculpted who i am today without even knowing who i am. :) But regardless, that is very impressive my friend; do you live in omaha? If your answer is no, its all the more impressive.

Conor Oberst "Willow Wood"
http://www.mediafire.com/?nvimxxyb3xv
okay so i found this song on soulseek. i didn't recognize the title even though it says it's from water. it's definitely not on the version i have so i double checked the tracklisting on wikipedia, and it isn't listed anywhere? all i can find about it on google is just... not helpful. plus he sounds older than on water, i'd place this song somewhere between soundtrack and a collection of songs, i'd say 1996-ish. mystery song, how did i not know about you? where have you come from and where are you going? i feel like i would have remembered it had i heard it before because it's significantly more bearable than most of the early stuff.

That is adorable that you wrote your application essay about Conor (hope that didn't sound condescending - it isn't meant to be!). I think I wrote all of mine about volunteer work or something - yours sounds much more interesting.
I found out about Bright Eyes in 1998 - I was on all sorts of music e-mail lists and befriended a few people from there who introduced me. Those tapes and CD's they sent me got me through a lot of late-night essay writing (I was in my first year at college then). I was amazed that someone my age was doing such interesting stuff.
To make this bootleg related - thanks for Soundtrack! Awesome. So amazing to actually be able to HEAR it.

I have seen him do similar as well. But my London friends said (as did some of the press) that this was NOT a normal 'hey, let's destroy stuff!' I can't remember exactly what went down (like I said, technical glitches a-go-go), but he was an ANGRY bunny. I had been planning on going to that show, but we ended up going to Amsterdam for a few weeks and saw them there - where Conor and Co. were actually very focussed and mellow. My friends found it to be in the realm of normalcy, so I think the press may have played it up a bit (big surprise...I think the press was still bitter after what he said about John Peel at Glastonbury a few years earlier).
