I've been a fan of the Velvets and Lou reed for years now, but I've never got round to listening to any of Nico's albums. Where should I start? Any good sites to click on?
Elliott's cover of Chelsea girls obviously perked my interest.

elliott held 'the marble index' in high regard but i find it hard work to listen to.

i think there's an island 'introduction to...' cd out for nico (in the same vein as the nick drake, tim hardin, john martyn etc ones) that might be your best bet

I would say start with Chelsea Girls and then if you're into that, check out The Marble Index

elliott guest dj'ed for a friend on a radio program called the hijack (i think) in the uk -- he played the song nibelungen from the marble index (as well as ride into the sun by the velvets and don't you worry 'bout a thing by stevie wonder). he mentioned he was really into nico's solo work at that time.

also, this excerpt from an intv w/amazon from figure 8 era:

Amazon: Are there any artists throughout history that you'd love to collaborate with?

Smith: Oh, man! Throughout history? Well, Nico. I've been really into Nico lately. But it's really fun to try and emulate a band by yourself because you get to play so many different things, or try to anyway. And, you know, think like a drummer or try to. And think like a bass player and think like a piano player and all that stuff. So that part is one of my favourite things about recording, so I don't usually… My imagination doesn't usually think about collaborating much with people. Although sometimes there's people that play on some songs.

Amazon: You still seem to be somewhat of an anachronism. Are you aware of your peers' music?

Smith: Some of it. I listen to as much of it as I can. But I'm the kind of person who listens to one record for months and months until I really can't at all anymore for a while. So for the last, I don't know, several months, it's been Nico. Before that it was Quasi. And anyone who's not playing one of, like, two types of songs at any given moment is going to be anachronistic. There's only at any time, like, 10 or 20 songs that are easy access to people who don't really care about music that much, I think.

it's *not* a cover -- elliott just chose and played a bunch of other people's recordings, like a radio dj would-- sorry for the confusion!

so, it may not be of as much interest to you, but in any case i got the file here a looong time ago. maybe you could do a search for 'elliott hijack' or ask around. i have the audio file somewhere, but my mac imploded last year so everything is a bit of a jumble. i'll let you know if i manage to dig it up. i found it interesting to hear the songs he chose, and he talked about each a little bit.

I think by played the songs he means put on a record of nico playing it. Not he played the song himself on guitar or whatever.

And Chelsea Girls and the Marble Index is definitely the way to go. I actually got the Marble Index first after reading in an article LA Weekly or something about Elliott saving pop music or something and it talks about him driving with headphones on listening to it and then a car accident happens around him and he didn't notice at first because he was driving with the headphones on (which is illegal), and is supposed to display his love for listening to music through headphones, which I completely identify with. Also, I really like it as it was produced by John Cale from the Underground and is toted as the first rock album with no structure, which I kinda believe was Elliott's original idea with From a basement on the Hill although he didn't get to finish it that way.
