Me and my friend are planning to start a covers band to do snob weddings and corporate events and stuff, we're planning to be a bit "knowing" and "cool" and stuff, we'll be really annoying but hopefully quite good. We don't want to struggle with the logistics of a band (or have to pay them) so we were going to get this session bloke to do all the backing tracks for us, but my friend's boyfriend is a dj and he wants to do sort of remixes for us instead.
What sort of problems might that create, I'm thinking about PRS and stuff?

Thank you! We've got lots of ideas, we want to have quite a strong image (I suggested Strawberry Switchblade as inspiration but I think that got nixed) and we're just compiling a setlist so we can start practicing. We want to do Love Is A Stranger which is a bit ambitious but my friend is a quite awesome singer so we might get away with it. Any suggestions about any aspect of this venture would be appreciated, since we'll hopefully be doing it more for FLM than art we want to know what people would pay for. I'm the tallest. A bit random but it's not often I get to say that.

I think you should go for great songs that people don't realise they know, ie no Wonderwall  but when they hear them are instantly reminded of how great they are.
Also, it could be fun to mess with the arrangements, to give the song a slightly different feel.
How many in the band? What instruments? What musical approach? ie acoustic/electric and loud?

I think you should cover either "Pictures of You" or "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure.
And how about a little Bruce? "I'm On Fire" perhaps?
I guess it depends on the venue… maybe "Thirty-Three" by The Pumpkins would be a great one to play at a wedding.
 You knows I'm right.

I think you ask what they want you to play at a wedding....

I think it'll probably be a bit bleepy and stuff, as D pointed out people will have to be able to dance to it (which terrifies me rather). There's me and D, we have vaguely similar voices with similar range but she's a million times better than me, and we're either going to have some session bloke she knows do everything onto a backing track for us or her boyf will be doing all muso stuff on a laptop, failing that she'll recruit somone to do that for us. We only want one other person, I'd like a band but like she pointed out that's extra people to split money with and we don't want to be messing about with a van.
Luke is right, at weddings you do what they tell you mainly, but once everybody's pissed you can mess about a bit. I'd love to do some Bruce but I think Katie Melua has beaten us to the Cure.
