there are a lot of great songs that use love to illustrate a greater concept that isnt necessarily a message of "I Love You" but rather some deeper commentary or a different aspect of love beside the topic of the typical ballad... I can think of hundreds off the top of my head for the loose standard, but great songs that you can honestly say have romantic relationships as th emain them are less abundant... here are some great ones

Arcade Fire - Une Anna Sans Lumiere Headlights look like Diamonds,
Beatles - in my life
Bob Dylan - (he has a shit load) I want you, one of us must know (sooner or later), Tangled up in blue, shelter from the storm,
The Cure - most of Disintegration
John Lennon - Oh Yoko!
Metric - Calculation Theme
Modest Mouse - Sleep Walkin'
Murder by Death - intergalactic menopause, canyon inn room 16
Neutral Milk Hotel - Naomi
Okkervil River - (the yhave a bunch of great love songs) Black, get big, a stone, so come back i am waiting, song for our so called friend, seas to far to reach, a favor
Pink Floyd - Vera
Pixies - Letter to Memphis,
REM - at my most beautiful
Radiohead - Black Star, True Love Waits
Robot Ate Me - Apricot Tea
Rogue Wave - You, publish my love
Smashing Pumpkins - to Sheila, Perfect, set the ray to jerry, medellia of gray skies, etc etc etc
The Smiths - there is a light that never goes out
Talking Heads - this must be the place (naive melody)
Wolf Parade/Sunet Rubdown - I'll Believe in anything, you'll believe in anything,
Violent femmes - good feeling
Yeah yeah yeahs - maps, y control

others...

Most of these songs are pretty melancholic. How about some more upbeat ones? eg, The Boy by the Pumpkins.

If one question can infuriate you so much you need counselling. I didn't mention "rock songs" in particular, and whatever percentage are love songs doesn't even matter to the question.

And I don't even know who Godsmack are

Nice one, what a great line, so euphoric!
I really love some of the old live stuff, The River, I'm On Fire, Cover Me.

Been listening to alot of Downbound Train alot too.

Alot of Bruce's songs remind me of Radiohead in some ways, the way something that is quite sad can be amazingly uplifting

Shit, I'd say 75% of songs worth second listen are love songs . . . at least in one line. Everytime I hear a trite one on the radio that I still can't help but enjoy I think of the part in 1984 where Winston is listening to the woman sing some prefabricated piece of crap, but she's LOVING it. Everybody seems to connect so easily to love songs. Sure, we all love a "fuck off and die in a fire" song every now and then but. Yeah I dunno where I'm going with this. Music is about love.

Some of my favorite love songs are . . .

The Cure - Lovesong (hur)
Ivy - Back In Our Town
The Smashing Pumpkins - Believe
Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again
Annie Lennox - Why
Andrea Bocelli - Time To Say Goodbye
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U
Art of Fighting - Reasons Are All I Have Left
Fleetwood Mac - Songbird
Hedwig & The Angry Inch - The Origin of Love
New Order - Run Wild
New Order - Vicious Streak
James - Just Like Fred Astaire
Tori Amos - Northern Lad

etcetcetc.
