Pat Robertson: Sharon’s stroke is God’s wrath
Televangelist suggests illness is divine punishment for ‘dividing God’s land’
Jan. 5, 2006 7:48 p.m. ET

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson suggested Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s stroke was divine punishment for “dividing God’s land.”

“God considers this land to be his,” Robertson said on his TV program “The 700 Club.” “You read the Bible and he says ‘This is my land,’ and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says, ‘No, this is mine.”’

Sharon, who ordered Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza last year, suffered a severe stroke on Wednesday.

In Robertson’s broadcast from his Christian Broadcasting Network in Virginia Beach, the evangelist said he had personally prayed about a year ago with Sharon, whom he called “a very tender-hearted man and a good friend.” He said he was sad to see Sharon in this condition.

He also said, however, that in the Bible, the prophet Joel “makes it very clear that God has enmity against those who ‘divide my land.”’

Sharon “was dividing God’s land, and I would say woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the EU (European Union), the United Nations, or the United States of America,” Robertson said.

Invokes 1995 Rabin slaying

In discussing what he said was God’s insistence that Israel not be divided, Robertson also referred to the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who had sought to achieve peace by giving land to the Palestinians. “It was a terrible thing that happened, but nevertheless he was dead,” he said.

The Anti-Defamation League issued a statement urging Christian leaders to distance themselves from the remarks. Robertson made similar comments as the Gaza withdrawal occurred, it said.

“It is outrageous and shocking, but not surprising, that Pat Robertson once again has suggested that God will punish Israel’s leaders for any decision to give up land to the Palestinians,” said Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the group, which fights anti-Semitism. “His remarks are un-Christian and a perversion of religion. Unlike Robertson, we don’t see God as cruel and vengeful.”

Pro and con

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said a religious leader “should not be making callous political points while a man is struggling for his life.”

“Pat Robertson has a political agenda for the entire world, and he seems to think God is ready to take out any world leader who stands in the way of that agenda,” Lynn said in a statement.

Robertson spokeswoman Angell Watts said of critics who challenged his remarks, “What they’re basically saying is, ‘How dare Pat Robertson quote the Bible?”’

“This is what the word of God says,” Watts said. “This is nothing new to the Christian community.”

In August, Robertson suggested on “The 700 Club” that American agents should assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who has long been at odds with U.S. foreign policy. Robertson later apologized for his remarks, saying he “spoke in frustration.”

Pat Robertson, like Muslims, serves the purpose of illustrating the insanity of fundamentalist religion.

Israel: Woe unto Pat Robertson for criticizing Sharon
Nation cuts ties with Christian broadcaster
Thursday, January 12, 2006

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Pat Robertson's mouth has cost him his piece of the Holy Land.

Israel on Wednesday said it would go ahead with plans to build an evangelical Christian heritage center in northern Israel -- but without Robertson, after the Christian Coalition founder said Israeli leader Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine retribution for "dividing God's land."

"From our perspective, such a statement made for a person that is lying in a hospital bed is outrageous," Deputy Tourism Minister Rami Levy told CNN.

Robertson had led a group of evangelicals planning the $50 million center, a joint venture with the state of Israel. The facility is to be built along the Sea of Galilee, where Christians believe Jesus walked on water.

The ministry said its decision to cut ties with Robertson was directly related to his comments. However, Israel will still continue with the project, Levy said.

"Same joint venture, just the players are going to be changed," he said. (Watch how Israel's decision curbs Robertson's plans -- 1:16)

Robertson had no immediate comment.

"We do not respond to media reports on our relationship with other governments, and we have not talked to the Israelis on this topic," his spokeswoman, Angell Watts, said Wednesday.

The Rev. Ted Haggard, president of the 30 million-member National Association of Evangelicals, said the controversy "is a blow to evangelical-Israeli relations -- and the situation is unfortunate." He said for the project to move forward, evangelical leaders "must exercise sensitivity and grace towards the people and leadership of the nation of Israel."

Israel donated the land on the Sea of Galilee for the project as part of a cooperative joint venture. Israel says millions of evangelical Christians visit the nation each year, and the project could draw even more tourists.

Robertson, who opposed Sharon's dismantling of Israeli settlements in Gaza, told viewers of his longtime show, "The 700 Club," that Sharon's stroke was God getting back at him for withdrawing Israeli settlers from Gaza.

"Woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the EU, the United Nations or the United States of America," Robertson said on the Jan. 5 program, a day after Sharon suffered a massive stroke.

"God says, 'This land belongs to me, and you'd better leave it alone.'"

Robertson said Sharon was "a very likable person, and I am sad to see him in this condition." But he linked Sharon's stroke to the 1995 assassination of Israeli leader Yitzak Rabin, who signed the Oslo peace accords that granted limited self-rule to the Palestinians.

"It was a terrible thing that happened, but nevertheless, now he's dead," Robertson said of Rabin.

Sharon, 77, is making some slight improvements from the cerebral hemorrhage he suffered last week as a result of his stroke. (Full story)

Robertson founded the Christian Coalition and sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1988. He last stirred controversy in August, when he called for the killing of Venezuela's president, Hugo Chavez.

The same month, the Anti-Defamation League criticized Robertson for warning that God would "bring judgment" against Israel for its withdrawal from Gaza, which it had occupied since the 1967 Mideast war.

Robertson claims to have used the power of prayer to steer hurricanes away from his companies' Virginia Beach, Virginia, headquarters. He took credit for steering the course in 1985 of Hurricane Gloria, which caused millions of dollars of destruction in many states along the U.S. east coast.

Many of Robertson's views mirror those of the evangelical activist Jerry Falwell, who has made frequent appearances on The 700 Club. He agreed with Falwell that the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were caused by "pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays, lesbians, the ACLU and the People for the American Way." After public outcry regarding the dialogue, which took place only days after the attacks, Robertson stated that he had not understood what Falwell was saying during the interview, which was conducted via television monitor.

On the June 8, 1998 edition of his show, Robertson denounced Orlando and Disney World for allowing a privately sponsored "Gay Days" weekend. Robertson stated that the acceptance of homosexuality could result in hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, terrorist bombs and "possibly a meteor."

Tip of the iceberg me thinks.

He's more of a manipulator than a crazy man I think. All Christian Fundamentalists (I presume thats what he is never heard of the bloke before now to be honest) use the Bible to further their own fucked up opinions. They always have the backing of other nut-jobs though so if he fucks off, someone will take his place.

the reason I agree with the joke is not the same as the original thought though...

I figure it could be a stress related thing because it seems the Gov and most of Amer. society isn't too fond of Homosexuality. To say the least. And the so called god that THEY believe in supposedly hates gays, so a mix of the two i guess.

and now i've confused the issue.

I'm just wondering though, not that mine makes any sense, but what does "Nak Nak" exactly mean, what kind of name is that? Just random or what?

Nak Nak's my nickname. I have no idea why it's Nak Nak!

I never post in this forum, but I've had the urge to for a long time.

On to what I was going to say.

Pat Robertson obviously could *not* be a true Christian. He's a Jew hater...and In my Bible it says that God loves the Jews.

Not to get all preachy on everybody here.

But it's dumbasses like him that turn people away from the faith. Him and that Falwell nutjob.

My name is rare enough to not warrant a nickname. I have a few nicknamed friends though including Panda (Andrew), Pat (Matt), Menace (Lee) and Lenny (Tom). Tom's called Lenny because he's a lumbering beast of a man who resembles to us the character from Of Mice And Men. Lee looks like Dennis The Menace. Panda allegedly came from the Andy Pandy and Pat is just random I think.

there I've bored you enough for today. Ta Ta!
