View Full Version : Anyone else who can only raise a smirk to Monty Python?

I mean, I definitely find it funny, but it's not entirely my bag. Maybe I would've liked it more back in the day when it was brand new, but I dunno, I'm more into either oddball comedy or psuedo-offensive comedy.
P.S. I got an Al Murray DVD for Christmas, fucking brilliant. Classic Lines:
[after finding an american in the audience]
"Ahh, The US of A. It was a good idea but its got a bit out of hand now"
[on the subject of terrorism]
"We've gotta thank America, if it wasnt for them funding the IRA for 20 years we'd've never known how to deal with bombers"

Yes. Monty Python elicits a once-in-a-while chortle, but little more. Life must have been really boring in the seventies.

Yeah, I'm not disrespecting it in anyway, but just don;t personally see the hype, and there is a LOT of hype about them, inc. people in our demographic just as much as any other.

You know what Monty Python gag always cracks me up? In Holy Grail, where the two guards are standing by the castle and that bloke starts running at them with a sword from about a mile away and they are still surprised when he shows up and starts killing them. That joke is better than Citizen Kane.

I can;t bring myself to watch Citizen Kane. I know it was supposed to "write the rule book" on modern cinema, but, I dunno, teh story doesnt really grab me and it looks justly dated.

It didn't even make me smirk.

I think Holy Grail is the funny, but the others I didn't find that great. Amusing.
But I could watch Fawlty Towers all fucking day and laugh for hours. Has anyone noticed that John Cleese has been doing stupid adverts for TBS?

It has a very British sense of humour. Most likely you need to be off your head to get it all.

I've not seen it either. Not that I have anything against it, I just haven't got round to watching it yet. I just like to say that things are better than Citizen Kane.

YOU MAD MAN!!! :D
Well I wouldnt say I dislike it (but I dont like it either), and I do think that the comedy is very intelligent and wrote a lot of rules itself, but sometimes instead of Oxbridge wit, I want to see 4 little cartoon Colorado-ites swearing to get my kicks.

Well I always found the show pretty boring, except for the rare skit here and there. I figured it was just because I wasn't british enough. The movies on the otherhand were pretty damn cool.

I never really watched Fawlty Towers. The Goose-Step in front of the Germans is classic though. I'm thinking of busting that a few times when I go to Germany in the summer for das World Cup.
I wont Sieg Heil and salute though, dont fancy being banged up.

i think monty python is pretty fucking funny but it's the kind of humor where usually the most i can do is smile or occasionally go, "ha ha!" And that's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just different. And so hot.

Yeah, I thought some parts were funny, but it never made me burst into hysterics like everyone else who was watching it with me (except Craig, who never goes into hysterics).

not to mention the fact that every time the camera goes back to him, he's still a mile away.
I love that movie. it's too nonsensical to not make me crack up every time. I think I broke my record for how many times I can watch a movie in one day with that one.
I especially like seeing the camalot scene done in lego on the DVD.
great, now I want to go watch it.....
