Jeff Ament, Matt Cameron, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Eddie Vedder.

Okay, so I'm not embarassed. I dig Pearl Jam; they got me through the (very) tough years of adolescence, and for that, I'll love them forever... and I'm even looking forward to the next album, their first on their own label.

I don't care that you don't care.

You are very brave.

You just earned significant respect points with this.

I'm definitely on board with the BeeGees. Brilliant during their first couple years, then brilliant later doing what was hugely misclassified as 'disco'. More like Visionary R&B. Somebody in that group is a Brain (I suspect Barry Gibb). Collaborative Genius.

I like a few Seals and Croft tracks, although S&C irritate me enormously. Chagrin, I'd forgotten your sting.

The Carpenters sported some very interesting arrangements. My face is now bright red, damn you.

I love all sorts of 1960s embarrassments, but I'll stick to 1970s.

ABBA. Sucker am I for arrangements, and some of theirs are crackerjack.

The hated Eagles. Very irritating group...but they did two tracks that I love:
"Life in the Fast Lane". Has some of the usual excess, but carries a marvelous pun-filled lyric.
"Lyin' Eyes". Because it's well-done and because it's a sort of satire of the country ballad.

Also, I'm not a big fan of Steely Dan, but they did "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", one of the creepiest tracks I know. Marvelous.

Confession is not good for the soul. Not mine, anyway. Feiny, you will pay for this.

If I just plain like a musician, there's not much embarassment there...but there is embarassment when you just like a track or two from someone that is mostly embarassing. My examples are:
1. "Beat It"-MJ
When is the last time you drove around town with the windows down and this song blasting from your speakers? It's awesome.
2. "Take it Easy"-Eagles
Everyone hates the Eagles. I like this song though. I don't know why.
3. "Sweet Caroline"-Neil Diamond
This song makes me happy. That's all I can say.
4. "Take Me Home (Country Roads)"-John Denver
He actually has a few jammin tunes, but the other ones are so, so bad that it's humiliating to all involved.
5. Late 80s early 90s hip hop in general.
It's so bad it's good. Come on. Rump Shaker? Hip Hop Hooray? Anyone?

Diamond did some nice stuff early on.

And I, too, like the Denver song. Particularly fine bridge. Denver had more talent than generally made it to tape. Sigh.

Oh yeah, I also like GNR. My first concert ever... sorta. I saw Kenny G when I was in 4th grade. And you know who opened? Michael Fucking Bolton.

Not that I don't despise both of the latter, but the fact that I've seen them live is pretty embarassing.

Just try and top that.

they also dont need to be on Levi Records.

I think that Fallen by Evanescence is a great album. I'm not really too shy about saying that though. I like alot of harder music and Nu-metal but havent listened in a while. I think LD-50 by Mudvayne is one of the best albums out. Certainly the musicians around here could appreciate their numbered style jams on that album. And I still like a bunch of random 80's music, some good some bad. I say don't be embarassed, just know it sucks beautifully.;)

I saw the Ninja Turtles too, man! That would be, I guess, my second concert if we're counting that.

GNR was third, I guess. The first two I only admit with anonymity or to a therapist. Well, then again, the Ninja Turtles were pretty cool. And Office Space has made association to Michael Bolton somewhat funnier; "I celebrate his entire catalog." And my name is Michael B. after all. And Kenny G gives me a good excuse to repeat Norm McDonald quotes.

Norm:

"In other news, Kenny G released a christmas album this week. Happy birthday Jesus! Hope you like crap."

"Kenny G set a record this week when he held a note for 45 minutes. He told fans not to watch because it would be boring. Of course, just as boring would be listening to Kenny G play different notes for 45 minutes."

And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to ponder suicide.

cat
12-30-2005, 02:38 PM
I think everyone has their good moments. Kenny G's moment is infinitesmally tiny tiny. It's the moment just after he breathes in and just before he breathes out.

I'm not sure there's any "artist" out there that totally sucks 100% of the time..

Everyone needs sleep I guess. Though just knowing that Kid Rock is out there somewhere makes me very angry... does that count as sucking?

Hey, Paula.

Yeah?

I gotta tell you something. I'm really excited about it. For the first time today, I woke up, I came to the store, and I feel confident to say to you that if you don't take this Michael McDonald DVD that you've been playing for two years straight, off... I'm going to kill everyone in the store and put a bullet in my brain.

David, what do you suggest we play?

I don't care. Anything. I would rather watch Beautician and the Beast. I would rather listen to Fran Drescher for eight hours than have to listen to Michael McDonald. Nothing against him, but if I hear Yah Mo B There one more time, I'm gonna yah mo burn this place to the ground.

Save the shame for the deserving truly stupid things you do, not for boppin along with the BeeGees.

Get rid of #1 and you've got 4 I could listen to all day, no shame about it.

I'm not embarassed to say I like any of the people I like, but according to most people I should be, so here's 5 at random that I love that make others cringe.....

1. Def Leppard - I grew up on these guys and I still love 'em. Big hair, spandex, one armed drummers, entirely too much reverb, man this was great stuff. Musically they were head and shoulders above the other hair bands, their riffs were tighter and the solos more melodic and the song structures were genius and their backing vocals and harmonies were amazing.

2. George Michael - Laugh if you want, but this guy is an amazing songwriter. Start with Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 and go from there and you'll realize that the whole teen idol thing wasn't what he wanted at all. He seems to have this split personality, half of him wants to write deep dark introspective ballads and the other half wants to make some of the best dance music on the planet.

3. Jars of Clay - They had their one hit and then everyone wrote them off as happy Jesus music crap. Musically they are amazing, and they're constantly evolving their sound and trying new things. Lyrically they've always been pretty strong too, but I can undertand why non-Christians would be put off. I can also see why people wouldn't like Dan's voice, sometimes it gets on my nerves too, but it grows on you if you let it, and the music is too strong to let a few sour notes ruin it for me.

4. Hilary Duff - This is the kicker, this is the one I've lost friends over. Everybody needs some crappy disposable pop in their diet, and hers is my flavor of choice. Most of her songs are well written, and her band is pretty tight. I especially love the way her guitarist layers his tracks, I sense a bit of a Brian May influence in his playing. I also really like how she doesn't try to do the whole diva vocal acrobatics crap. She knows she only has an average voice and she doesn't try to compete with the divas, she just sounds like a normal teen girl. The lyrics are usually pretty bad, but what else do you expect from teen pop? Either ignore the stupid words, or remember what it was like to be a stupid junior high kid with a crush, and lighten up and enjoy some decent sugary pop while you still can.

5. Yes - I'm hoping things are starting to change with bands like The Mars Volta, but for a long time it seemed like the indie music world was very anti-technique. Anyone who played solos was a wanker, anyone with adventurous song structures and arrangements was just being pretentious, etc. "Prog" became a bad word in so many circles and I've gotten a lot of crap over it. But you know what? I don't care. Up until the departure of Steve Howe, Yes made some of the most amazing music in the history of the world. Even crazier, they managed to sell a lot of records doing it. They had a nine minute song in the top 40 for crying out loud. I don't care what anyone says, Yes be good stuffs.

5 Bands/Musicians I Should Probably Be Embarrassed About Liking:

1) The Donnas
2) Franz Ferdinand
3) Tom Jones
4) Janet Jackson
5) U2 ("Achtung Baby" and everything that came before it; their newer stuff sucks compared to the old if you ask me)

I think U2 are way overrated as far as their new stuff goes and Bono is way too full of himself for my taste. But "Boy" and "War" are still excellent albums.

Tom Jones... Blame my dad. We have similar taste in music. Naturally, my mom can't stand Tom Jones.

The Donnas and Franz Ferdinand get labeled as posers and sellouts, but I like their music and I would buy tickets to their concerts. :D

I think everyone likes at least one Janet Jackson song.

1. Sarah Brightman
Explanation: I had my musical phase and totally freakin LOVED (and still love) Phantom of the Opera. And Sarah Brightman is still amazing, no matter how embarrassed i am to admit it...
2. BRIGHT EYES
All other emo out there i can't stand, but i always thought of Conor Oberst as "special emo" (aka speemo) since he has some talent. There. I said it. I love Bright Eyes, despite the fact that Conor Oberst is a total asshole.
3. Gwen Stefani
I grew up on No Doubt, and thinking Gwen Stefani was the greatest person in the whole freakin world. As far as i'm concerned, she still is up there.
4. Fiona Apple
Probably just because she's so cliche drama queen chic to plenty of folks in my generation it's kind of embarrassing to admit i think she's a genius.
5. I LIKE RAP.
No specific artists, but the good underground stuff...the stuff on Emerson college's radio station on weeknights. Can ANYONE tell me that this is not an amazing line?!

Heh, thanks. But in all seriousness... on one song on her first album I counted 7 distinct guitar parts, and even though there aren't many of them, when there are guitar solos they're usually double- or triple-tracked. I know Brian May wasn't the only one to do that sort of thing, but he's who always comes to mind when I hear stuff like that, so...

I'm bored and this is fun... I love guilty pleasure threads. I thought up a bunch more at work.....

Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls is one of the best pop songs ever. Their covers never cease to bring a smile to my face. And talk about some innovative packaging... But then again maybe I just have a thing for gay duos, I like the Indigo Girls a lot too...

Hanson - Their first album got on my nerves, but the second one had some great bluesy funky Motown-ish pop on it, and the third one sounds like Cheap Trick with a different singer.

Billy Joel - Yes, my dad loves him, and I'm sure yours does too. But regardless, he's one of the best songwriters of his time.

Hawthorne Heights - I have no idea how this band got popular with TRL and teen girls, it makes no sense. But they're loud and screamy and sometimes I'm really in the mood for that. Three guitarists and three vocalists makes for a very interesting mix at times, and some of their stuff is really catchy too.

Alabama - Another one I grew up on, they were the only country music I would listen to for years and years. They could get a little cheesy at times but when they were on they were amazing.

I can probably think of more if you give me enough time. I think most people would be embarassed to own my CD collection.

Also Catatonia, Kingmaker, Carter USM and Sugababes :-o

By the way, I didn't make it over to Cambridge in the end - a PM will be heading your way as soon as I get five minutes... ;)

technically, though, I have mentioned Coldplay and RHCP before on here, so hmmmm. I was a fan of Shannon Noll at one time (he was a runner-up on Australian Idol). Now THAT, is embarrasing:bag:

you're embarrassed about like RHCP? i don't get that one, thats a great band really.

there's probably plenty that i SHOULD be embarrassed of, but i am thankfully oblivious to what is considered cool and uncool anymore... i mostly stopped listening to the really embarassing stuff (ace of base anyone?) when i was 13.

I always got the impression a lot of people here hated them and I've seen a few people slag them off so I thought they'd fall under this category for me anyway, not that I should care about other people's opinion on what music I like, but I know, the RHCP rock, and I'm glad to see that there are other people here who like them:)

I'm only a little embarrassed to say I like Coldplay.

And though I don't like Silverchair (well, I probably did when I was twelve), I was impressed with how massively epic one of their recent records was when a friend played it (see, I don't even know which record it was). The production's absolutely insane and Johns sings perfectly.

Diorama? If that's the Silverchair album you mean, you're right, it is awesome. Apparently they're bringing out a new album this year/next year.

Well the alternative station we get around here played coin operated boy basically on repeat for like a month. Lets just say that song can get to you pretty fast. I actually liked the song the first time I heard it, I thought it was different, but now I guess I have distaste for them. Drive 105 you jerks. I wouldn't have gotten into them anyway but oh well

Lido Shuffle-Boz Scaggs ( this one i loved as a kid, and colud never fighure out what he was on about) Boz is alright, he gets a bad rap but he had some skills..

Say you love me- Fleetwood Mac ( this song is actually really funny if you're a bit drunk and stoned and you think of this bands inner turmoils and just how much Cocaine was floating around in that studio while they were recoding this album)

Jimmy Buffett- i can say i actually like one or two of his songs but really only one or two...and i aint saying which ones:yar:

Nothing shameful album Adam and the Ants. I listened that song so much as a kid that I can still hum the chorus in my head having not heard it in at least ten years.

(and I like "Africa" too, but that one probably is embarrassing)

Well... I must admit, i was like a 'gangsta' in highschool... I used to wear like "ruffryders" sliver jeans, and like silky black/blue/orange Wu Tang Clan shirts... and like... wowzers! I have had jobs and such since i was about 12 years old... so I have always had money, and invested a remarkable amount of money into Rap cd's... Like i am talking close to 200 Rap CD's... I have traded many in at used places, but i still have well over 100, nearly none get listened too.

besides that, probably Michelle Branch, i am sorry but i am like head over heals in love with that girl.... oh Michelle....

Shannon Noll:-o. Well...I haven't listened to him in ages...probably about 4000 of his stilted performances of "what about me?" ago :-p

The weird thing about Shannon Noll is that he's made more mileage out of that 'What About Me' song than Moving Pictures ever did...yet the original is 1000X better - Noll can't even sing it in the right key yet he continues to use it like some sort of insane teenybop torch song.

Hanson.
I was actually just listening to them the other night. My ex girlfriend was obsessed with them, she had every album, single, poster, book, you name it. She swore she was going to marry Taylor. Not a good thing to tell your boyfriend huh? So anyways after a while they started to grow on me. I still don't like the first album much aside from a couple songs, but the second and third albums were both really good. They did some fanclub only live EP before their third album that was all acoustic, I need to try to find a copy, I was surprised at how good it was.

Slippery When Wet - Bon Jovi
Dude, old Bon Jovi was awesome. Everything up through the best of album from like 94 or something was good. Then they took a little break and came back with that It's My Life song and 30 others that sound exactly like it. I hate to disappoint good ol' Jon, but I will not have a nice day until he remembers how to write a good song.

My only guilty pleasure is Guns and Roses. I rock out to GNR, especially their long, 'psychological' songs like Civil War, Estranged, and November Rain. When I was starting high school GNR were the 'bad guys.' You weren't supposed to like both GNR and Nirvana. Also, Axl Rose is kind of creepy.
