View Full Version : I've decided...

...that I don't really like movies any longer. Or rather - it's not that I don't like them, it's that I've ceased to be interested in them, aesthetically. And I kind of regret all the time I've spent being interested in them.

My Netflix queue now consists primarily of the various discs making up the first and second seasons of Alias.

But you still want to see Memoirs of a Geisha, right?

Yes. I'll be seeing it after watching Oprah and before going to the cheesecake store.

Ted, today Oprah had the cast of Crash on... They were trying to convince the audience that black people are a bit more than lazy looters. To no avail, I'm afraid.

I want to see Memoirs of a Geisha because I loved the book, but I know I'll be disappointed.

Ted and Henriette, do you two live far away from each other?

Henriette

Ted lives in Boston and I live in Brooklyn, so ~ 4 hours or so.

Why?

She's a girl so she's unreasonably interested in other people's relationships.

I know what Ted means. I can feel myself getting back into movies, but I haven't watched one I haven't seen in quite some time. Just a little break, I guess.

Im thinking of giving up my Unlimited pass at the cinema. Hardly use it anymore. And if I do then I will be able to afford a contract mobile phone again, and will get one with a 2 megapizel camera, and mp3 player, thus knobbing 3 birds with one connie, innit.

memoirs of a geisha is lovely but it stinks of the usa and doesn't have the true whimsicalness/appreciation of what's going on that it should have.

i want to describe it better but i'm tipsy so cumbersome descriptions will have to do.

it's too clumsy, especially for a film where the focus is elegance and poise, effectively.

but it's still beautiful to watch so i will recommend it.

I heard it's REALLY disappointing. And Zhang is Chinese, not freaking Japanese. Oh well.

Yeah everyone is up in arms about this but . . . it makes a difference. And there are soooooooo many damn Japanese actors, please tell me why there was no one in the entire country who was not up to the task. I heard some excuse about 'talent' . . . yeah, you weren't looking hard enough. CHINESE =/ JAPANESE, people will be able to tell the difference and it will piss them off!

Eh, it's not as if Americans would recognize the difference. They're all the same anyway. I mean, they all use chopsticks, right? So it's pretty much the same culture.

I actually read the book after someone suggested it to me. It was pretty good, although I fear what the movie is going to be like. I'll probably rent it at some point.

As far as movies go, I am also rather tired of them. The major problem is just that the majority of movies are simply lifted from other movies which established an idea. It's like watching the same damn movie, just with minor changes. I only really get interested in a movie if it has some unique quality or signifigance.

But yeah, I don't think there's been a real sort of classic out for quite a while now.

Ah yes, but The Shaggy Dog has promise to reinvent the way movies are made!

By which I mean, that perhaps it will be so bad, and do so horribly that movie studios will finally abanndon remakes of old crap. It's a sad thing when my hopes for society are summed up in "perhaps things will get so bad that people will realize how shitty it all is and finally grow taste".

Haha, actually in all seriousness I didn't think that many people would care at first. I knew I would now but I've seen / heard enough negative press comments about it that I guess they really should not have just picked Zhang. She's probably better known than any Japanese actress but then they mightaswell cast Lucy Liu... or Tia Carrere D:

I'm sure they do this all the time with movies involving other ethnicities. It's no big deal as long as no one can tell. But the Japanese are pretty distinctive.

Tia Carrere, hahahaha. That would've been so awful D:
