What makes you appreciate his music? Or what is that you can't stand in it?

Please be serious and cooperative, I'm really interested in knowing about different experiences and ideas. Answering "I love him because he's GOOD!" or "I hate him because he SUCKS!" won't be considered a valuable answer.

I just want to have some serious civil discussion about Bright Eyes.

Personally for me the first thing I noticed was the melodies, no kidding, they sounded familiar and comforting and yet wrapped up in this odd indie-ish arrangment and sung in this off-key emo-ish voice. The voice was another thing that grabbed me first, I liked the fact you can't help but LISTEN. I don't think anyone can deny it. Maybe after you listen you want to stick knives in your ears, but you can't help but HEAR. It won't make any good background music.
Then the arrangement (note: first album was Lifted for me), folky melodies, weird yet powerful voice and all them horns and cymbals and pedal steels. it was both familiar and quirky.

Last but obviously not least, the lyrics. That was the last thing I appreciated because I didn't have them until a few weeks after listening to Lifted. And they were good in the same way as the music was, this mix of quirkiness and old-fashioned romantic poetry. Using symbols and story-telling to convey personal feelings and struggles. Like dream journals come to life. Irony.Self-deprecation. Some kind of "lying in the gutter, looking at the stars" philosophy, not much (even though I can't say none especially in older songs)of those fake post-teenaged pessimism antics. When something is overdone or overboard is because the song, the story, requires it. Like small plays, always sincere and always faked. Knowing that what matters, the ultimate goal is some kind of imperfect beauty that yet is less imperfect than how the world was before the song was written and played .The goal is not perfection, the goal is trying to reach for it.

Oh my god, i am not able to express my feelings and opinion in that way i intend to.
I guess even this sentence is full of failures.
Donīt mind. Iīll try.

I adore everything concerning his music :
-the texts, they are so true, and i can identify with them.
Many experiences and feelings he describes are equal to mine, very strange. I think every thoughtfull, sad teen or grown-up (maybe youīd consider it as "emo", you know) experience equal things.

-the music itself. I am no musician and i donīt know much about arrangements or something, but his mixtures of the whole instruments sound quite interesting and itīs definately not sad in most cases. I mean, he uses sad texts and "happy" music. Thatīs weird and maybe shows how confused (?) he is, or how he wants to make us confused.

-the voice. Man, his voice. For me itīs perfect. At his scream-orgies i nearly feel to cry. And it sounds so convincing, and sad.

Yeah, i guess the same reasons as you.
