Don Quixote, and translations

i need to read don quixote, but there a shit load of translations and i am wondering if any of you have a preference as to which one is the best?

There is a translation done by Burton Raffel which does Cervantes justice. If you cannot speak español, this is probably the closest that you are going to get.

Las traducciones no son una mierda. Son totalmente necesarias y en general las traducciones publicadas son muy buenas.

Para este libro en concreto recomiendo la traducción de Rutherford, hecha en los últimos diez años y disponible en Penguin.

It just isn't true to say that translations are shit. Translators of literary texts have achieved a mastery of the two languages that takes ages to acquire and is beyond most of us anyway. If you wait till your Spanish is good enough to read El Quijote, you'll be starting it in about 2025. So why not read the thing in English.
