You mean a synth? To make crazy noises that don't actually exist as opposed to piano/string sounds?

It depends on your budget, but you can pick up a Roland Juno series (I can specifically recommend the 106, but they're all supposed to be pretty good) pretty cheaply, they're very easy to use and many actual artists use them so you won't need to get a new better one if you decide you like it.

awesome, this may be a moronic question but i'd still be able to get a good ol' fashion keyboard sound out of it, right? maybe an organ if i'm lucky?

the casio ck-700 is nice....100 tones, 100 rhythms...we sell them for 99.99 at my store. anything cheaper is going to sound like crap. if you really want to get into something nice, a casio priva is a lower end digital...weighted keys and all. I have the Korg SP-300, which is amazing, but it lists at 1300 or so.

It depends really, I've managed to get pretty good organ sounds out of one of my synths (not the Juno, though I haven't tried), but you have to be prepared to do a fair bit of playing around with it if you're after very specific instrument sounds (organ sounds are quite easy to get though), and most intruments sounds would require several different synth voices working together, and if you're looking for a synth to do that with you'd be looking at spending a fair bit more. I'd advise a look on www.vintagesynth.com to get a good idea of what different synths you'd be able to get with the ammount you'd be willing to spend, or ask in its forums to see what they suggest.

I had a quick look at the ck 700 that the guy above suggested and you'd be able to get organ sounds out of that, but it's just a plain ol' keyboard really so you wouldn't be able to make your own sounds.

man, for organ sounds, nothing beats the Korg BX-3...it's the digital version of the Hammond B3 organ. They have everything...volume pedal, leslie speed pedal, etc. costs a pretty penny though....lists at $4500. Sale price generally around $3375

sorry but what exactly does this mean? take instrument sound A and mix it with instrument sound B to get the sound you want? if that's it it shouldnt really be a problem, im just really looking for an organ sound and a piano sound, horn sounds would be nice, but not something that will make or break a purchase, any other sounds are really just icing on a cake

thanks by the way

also do you guys mean the casio ct-700?

If that's all you're after, the CTK-700 would do you fine.

what does it do that the other doesn't that you'd use? by all means get it, but the difference is about $100 which I know I'd rather not spend if I could help it.

My friend got a most amazing workstation recently, with a D-beam and stuff! It cost a bomb though.
