Do you have an opinion on kill shelters vs. no-kill shelters?

Ermm....obviously it would be nice if all animals could live but it's a cost element at the end of th day. If people were more responsible and neuteured/spayed their pets, there wouldnt be so much of a problem. But because they don;t theres always going to be strays and excess animals, and sadly a lot of them will be put down. A consolation is that it is relatively pain-free, and people who work at animal shelters are always really nice to teh animals. In my experience anyway......

I hate people that buy pets for chritsmas or buy pets just because theyre babies then kill them. Fucking wankers.

I think it's probably crueller to keep animals in cages than to have them put down, and a lot of the dogs in shelters have got really serious behaviour problems so they're not likely to be successfully rehomed.

I agree. I really thought some people would not want to hurt the poor doggies and kitties and fight for their right to live. :(

I think the animals should be kept alive unless they are sick or really old... because someone may still adopt them and give them a nice home. :)

abolutely. all of my pets have come from shelters and we've had several who exhibited serious behavior problems and sadly had to be returned for that very reason. if you keep a large dog locked in a cage all day every day for too long, that dog will freak out for life. there are great matches though... my chocolate lab came from the pound, and he's great. he was a little sick when we got him, but 200.00 later he was totally fine. he's trained and gentle with both of my small children.

Pets should be registered when they're purchased, and not just when they're older. That is, there should be some mechanism where the owners of abandoned pets can be traced. Maybe expensive, but it would be eventually off-set by reduced costs of animal shelters. The mandatory de-sexing of pets not intended for breeding could be another option.

Damn, someone finally agress with me. But i am little lighthearted on the sick part, but i understand your viewpoint. Invisible + Rep Given. Also i think we need to go out and go to people's homes every now and then, and say hey do you want this pet.

Say NO TO MURDER ON GOD'S ANIMALS Y'ALL.

animals should be spayed/neutered so that we don't have AS big a problem...

i, too, agree wholeheartedly with ems...but i also know that i am being somewhat idealistic :(

Well put, Fras!!

Although I strongly, strongly support no-kill shelters, I understand the need for kill shelters. In a perfect world, people would spay/neuter the right amount of pets and if there were virtually no abused/unwanted animals, and the whole kill/no-kill issue would be resolved.

I support no-kill shelters though just because I think it's unfair that an animals has to die because of human stupidity. It's not fair at all, and I wish more people would just be smart about it.

*sigh* I love animals way too much sometimes.

A few years ago I got all wacky trying to save animals. And figured that would be my thing I did to "make a difference".

But it's so ugly. It's nearly impossible to get a stray pet into any rescue group. No vets will take them, and it's irresponsible to give them away to strangers for free. I'm not placing an ad and having strangers come to my home either.

Some groups will let you show them at Petsmart on weekends, but keeping a dog at my house, risking my pets health and dealing with that stress was too much to deal with. And there's the money issue if that animal gets sick. And a husband not to happy about it.

So, after weeks of not finding an animal a home, I had to cut my losses. I ended up taking at least 6 dogs and 1 cat to the city shelter.

That's not good. Even knowing at least it wasn't out in horrible weather or wasn't going to be abused or die a terrible strung-out death isn't much compensation for knowing it only has a 30% chance of living.

Our no-kill shelter is always full and never takes anything. I hate that puppies grow up there and can spend 3 or 4 years waiting and then they dissapear off their web site, mysteriously.

The last dog I rescued was a rottweiler with a chain around it's neck. I drove him to my vet and had them cut the chain off. Then I called all the rescue groups, got turned down, and breeders to get info. I wanted to keep him, but I wasn't sure he wouldn't eat my dogs or child so, I drove him back where I found him and let him out of my car. He was huge!

After trying to save animals for 3 years, I gave up. Even returning a dog to the owner pissed me off because most would act like they didn't give a damm. 1 out of 5 would be happy.

---
So then, I would rescue betta fish from pet stores and wal-mart that were sitting in dirty water. I got up to 18 of them! And it took an hour and a half every week to clean all the individual containers. I had most of them for 3 years. I only have 1 now. Thank goodness!
----
Then I realized I was acting crazy! And now I don't rescue anything. :)

I understand you're frusteration, but that's a HORRIBLE thing to say!

Jesus, if you just rescue ONE life than it's better than saving none! Have you really become so jaded that it's not worth it to even TRY?!

I just about have. I did rescue a puppy a year ago and kept her. And I rescue hurt baby rabbits, and hawks and birds-my vet takes them for free.
I wouldn't pass up any puppies or kittens I guess, but I no longer stop and pick up every stray dog I see.

I didn't feel like I was saving their life, if they ended up at the pound, I felt I killed them and should have left them where they were.

Plus, I am risking my own 3 dogs' health by bringing in stray dogs, even though they have all their shots.

And my husband is not nice when I drag something in. He usually makes me feel an inch tall, like a little kid that's been bad or incredibly so angry I want to kill him. The only big fights we ever have, has been about animals.

So with all the problems it causes, I'm not sure it is worth it. And when they probably die at the pound, it isn't.

Our pound kills over 13,000 animals a year. 70% will die there.
-------------
So all you stupid people breeding your pets without a care in the world, you are the problem. For every free puppy you give away (or sale) you are creating a long line of unwanted dogs that create more unwanted dogs.
You are causing suffering by not giving a shit and assuming everyone that takes your free puppy or kitten will feed it and take care of it. Not so!

If your dog or cat gets pregnant on "accident" you are a stupid fuck! And don't tell me spaying is too expensive--fuck that.

Educate yourselves by going to the pound or hanging out with rescue groups if you think "one litter" doesn't matter.
