i saw this longass film a few weeks ago, saw it because of how niknik raves about lars von trier, and i was amazed by it. i loved the sparse sets and the engaging characters, but i have heard a lot of hateful comments about it as well. i was wondering, what does everyone else think of dogville?

It worked for a majority of the first two acts, the third was way too rushed and just ridiculous. Trier has made better, but at least this wasn't as Americanized. His dogme films were most impressive, from what I have seen.

THe first time i saw this i got so incredibly depressed during it that i thought i would never watch it again.

however, now, i can't stop thinking about it. and i first saw it two years ago.

people say it's about america, but that's only because of the well known fact that trier has never set foot in this country nor has any desire to. this film is about humanity on a whole more than just america.

it's one of the best parables about the desttuctive nature of humans ever made.

i think i'm stretching a bit far when i say this, but i also think it's a fairly accurate description as to how the world would end given there is a god.

james caan is god, grace is a christ-like figure (also, as her name suggests, god's grace). when she first comes to the town folks are wary, too used to their old ways. then they find jobs for her to do and enjoy her company.

Also, grace could be seen (and this is where i'm stretching) as technology of a sort... such as plumbing, mail, internet, television, things we don't truly need as humans.

Soon the townsfolk become dependent on grace's services and become greedy and angry (granted this is also burning america...) until they punish her, abuse her, rape her.

god returns for grace, and grace and god have that almost ethereal discussion about, you know, dogs and such.

the town is destroyed. Tom, the symbol of faith in humanity, even christianity, is also killed, being so mistaken about what message he was trying to convey through grace.

really, if there is a god, then this movie does a better job of describing how christianity should be better than the bible.

and as long and depressing as it is... i just can't stop watching it.

oh and grace's line about how she 'takes care' of vera chilled my blood the first time i watched it.

so, uh, i guess i really like Dogville.
