Hi everyone...I only just came back, and have just started writing this thread so I haven't looked around to see if anyone I know is still here. This place brings back alot of memories...like when I had the most posts out of anyone and was the first to get to 15,000 posts. Jesus Christ, what did I do that for?! :D™
Anyway, I'm living in Switzerland with my girlfriend now for any that care or remember that I was living in Canada, and I'm working on music, and teaching guitar to keep up the income.
I have just got a new recording program (one that cost me Seven Pounds at that!) and my recording possibilities have opened up immensely. So I've been working on a few songs. I've mixed and finished the first one, called Atli Part One, which is part one of a three part song...I think I'll work on part two tonight. And the other is called Yeoman, and it's inspired by Hunter S. Thompson's "The Rum Diary" which I found to be a wonderful book, and surprisingly elegant coming from the savage style he usually works in.
Yeoman is in no way finished, but I'm proud of the parts that I've worked on...which comes just after the two minute mark until the end.
So if you'd pleease listen to these two songs, which are up on my Myspace account, The Woodlandish Ghoul (http://www.myspace.com/thewoodlandishghoul) would you also please comment back here telling me what you think, because honestly I need all the constructive criticism I can get.
Thanks all, and a warm hello to everyone I knew here!

I remember you...it wasn't long ago that you disappeared. You draw good. I'll check out the songs soonish. And you can check out the ones on the link in my sig!
I remember you, Ed! I really like your music, one thing though is it's maybe slightly too effect heavy, mainly the first one. I get that the effects are necessary to how it works, but they kind of swamp it a bit.

J/K, of course I remember you, Ed (see I remembered your name!).
Listening to your material, the first song reminds me of 80'sish Pink Floyd. Could use the different instruments to stand apart from each other, because they tend to blend together a bit too much. Probably could use a pre-amp (or a better one) to get more clarity. What program are you using now? I always recommend Pro Tools systems by Digidesign, although they are abit expensive (not for what you get though).
Song #2 was written very well, could use bass of course, but I'm guessing you knew that. Good syncronization when all the instruments are playing, but again, it could use more clarity. Your levels for the different instruments are also a bit off. The most important thing is to not have one of the instruments overwhelm the others (unless of course, you're going for that). I don't know what program your using, but I'm sure you can just adjust them until they sound balance. You could also do some simple panning tricks, IE pan the electric in the middle on one AUX track, and hard left on another AUX track, then do the same but for the right on other instruments. Since the acoustic plays alone sometimes, you want to make sure that it is in the middle, or panned hard left on one track, and hard right on another for a stereo effect.
Sounds like your developing song writing. Being able to record is a GOD SEND in that area, especially digitally which makes it easy to edit and mix around. Good luck!

Gotcha, I'll see what I can do about toning down the effects a bit.
Thanks.

Well it was quite a while ago in my mind anyway.
Thanks, completely forgot I posted my drawings up here.
And I will check out your songs tomorrow...it's a bit late tonight for that. But I hear you Rock™ quite a bit from some unknown source. ;)

Thanks for the tips. I only just started using this program. It's called MAGIX Audio Studio Generation 6. I know I know, it's probably shit, but coming from what I was using, it's great for me. And it was only seven pounds! I don't have much access to any other instruments, so right now I'm working with just an acoustic and an electric, with a limited number of effects.I'd love to get into a full band setting and bring some of the stuff to life with drums and bass, but that'll have to wait for now.
Thanks for the tips on Yeoman...I know it definately needs better equalizing...I think I'll have to bring the electric guitars down alot once some vocals go on there. And I've been trying to use panning to some advantage...but I'm still figuring out what sounds best in what position of the sound field. Anyway, many thanks to everyone for the comments, it's great to get some tips and pointers. I hope I don't have to rerecord Atli to bring down the overwhelmingness of the effects! We'll see.
Thanks, -Ed

hey, I just brieflly skimmed the thread and saw that John mentioned there was no bass in one song. I play bass and have a pretty good recording setup. I could lay down a line if you want. You can check out my playing at

Of course I remember you, Ed! I even remember a somewhat philosophical 10,000th post from you. Very dramatic. Not really. Good to know that you're still alive. Don't be a stranger so much (unless you're getting some hot poonany, in which case, stay away as long as you need to).
Hows' Switzerland treating you? Are you feeling a bit Nuetral overall?
:D

Hey Peter. Switzerland's treating me very well. Haha. No I'm not feeling neutral at all because tonight our town's team won the Hockey Match 5-1.
Allez Villars Allez! It was a cold time, as it's a semi covered ice rink which is open to the elements. It was worth it though. Good game!
Allez les Renard Futes! (or: Come on Sly Foxes, which is our team name).

Alright, sorry to be so unsociable for the past little while, but I've been snowboarding and job hunting and recording Atli Part II, which is now up
Have a listen (http://www.myspace.com/thewoodlandishghoul)
Please take a quick listen and tell me what you think, but remember, it's part two, so it's linked with Atli Part One, and it's just better if you listen to that first, and then Atli Part II next.
Thanks to all who listen.
