I need a four track or something, it will only be from the pawn shop or wherever, but what do I need to be looking for? Because I'm crap with this sort of stuff and would probably buy a stuffed owl if the shop assistant told me to.

take a gander here. (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=rec/search?c=4753)
that should give you a general idea of what to be looking for.

Get that Tascam famous budget 4 track....forget the name but I had one once. Worked fine. Then I sold it for a quarter of weed...about a third of what it was worth!

Could just record live? You could do that off a Stereo!

Not yet, I'm staying away from the pawn shop in case I buy something stupid, last time I went in I nearly spent £300 on a guitar.

What kind? Would it have been worth it?

I'm sure it was just a '54 Les Paul Gold Top or something equally invaluable ;)

either Tascam 414mkII or porta-o2mkII. I would say the 414, as I've actually used one. also be sure to invest in decent mics (Shure Sm57/58 are pretty good for instruments/vocals respectively - although bear in mind the XLR interface).

as far as 4-tracks go, the nicest thing out there is the Korg PXR4. It is a digital recorder that has 8 virtual tracks per each 'real' track...totaling at 32 tracks. It lists for 500,but you can find it for around 380...at least that's what we sell it for at my store. It saves on Smart Media cards, which you can pick up at electronic stores, is the smallest recording unit on the market, and is made by Korg, who is very well respected and makes great products. There is a condenser mic built in to the machine, which is amazing. I record everything through the condenser mic...it is the equivalent of a $200 mic at least. there are built in effects, usb output, line in, 1/4" input, line out, headphone jack, and so on. its a great deal if you are still looking around. And if you are in the chicago land area, come to midlothian music. Our Orland Park location is huge and growing bigger...708 403 3733
good luck with finding what's right for you
