Anarchy in Brum...any thoughts? It's weird cos I was giving a wee history lesson about the Leeds riots last night.

Living in Leeds, as I do right now I know what a racist city this is. No bugger bleeding mixes. I always get on with the Asian guys at Bobs, our local corner shop, but I guess it helps that i give them money.

Its just idiots blaming the wrong people for their shitty lives.

Herr Lipp

Apparently the black community are secretly jealous of the more affluent Asians. Black people should just sort their own fucking shitty lives out. I don;t mind pakis much personally, the majority of them are hard working entrepreneurs.

Birmingham's a fucking scummy area. I was in a fairly decent part of the city earlier this year at a Funeral.

I think Leeds is pretty alright, at least around here, for people getting along. And it's not like there hasn't been a bit of "trouble" in the vicinity of late...I don't know, maybe I'm just wearing Imagine-tinted glasses or something, but I've never noticed any overt racial tension in the area. I mean, of course there's racism, but I don't fear for my life or anyone else's on those grounds. Aren't race riots a symptom of social deprivation rather than innate racism, anyway?

Thats what I was saying with the idiots blaming each other.

Whereabouts are you?

Herr Lipp

Craig, do you mean you wouldnt wanna live here because its a city or because it's in England? because the former would be misguided, as Scottish cities are far worse eg Glasgae, Kilmarnock , than your average English city. I too would avoid London, Manchester and even Leeds at all costs. But I can;t stand the claustrophobia, traffic and bad air more than anything.

I would rather live almost anywhere but Kilmarnock, venerable city of my birth.

And I am now in the bohemian enclave of Little Woodhouse, not normal Woodhouse. Very close to the bomb factory.

Interesting. Especially since I live in Burley Park. Youre just down the road from me.

Hang on, Im going stick my head out of the window and wave.

Ever experience the "joys" of the Haddon Hall pub?

In my opinion Britain's worst cities can be rated in this order:

Manchester
London
Birmingham
Glasgow
Dundee
Any protocity within the vicinity of Glasgow such as Govan or East Kilbride

ramblingrose

I hate Nottingham, can that be on the list? And Hull is the very essence of "godforsaken", surely.

I probably could see someone waving from Burley Park if you dressed in something fluorescent as I'm on the top of the hill. I often frequented the Haddon Hall when I lived in the beautiful Ashvilles, just off Cardigan Road near t'Co-op.

and sorry to be picky but Birmingham is worse than London, at least they don't automatically put evaporated milk in your tea in London. Eeew.

Ah yes! I still make the infamous co-op crazy-chicken fags-dash before running for the train.

The hill doesnt really cover it. Leeds is nothing BUT hills.

Im just about to head of to the Haddon now. Gonna see if I can keep up my record of avoiding fights with the chavs. If you ever head down there now, dont take any black male friends as the landlady Gaynor has a certain prediliction for them.

Birmingham is pretty horrible. Full of asians and blacks. wait a minute, wasnt this thread about birmingham???

London's not really that bad, it's pretty clean compared to other cities, the biggest gay thing is probably house prices. But London's public transport (apart from when its getting bombed) cant be knocked.

Herr Lipp

Sorry, I was relating to Central.

I wouldnt want to live in Brixton, Streatham, Mitcham, Penge, Bow any of those places really. I imagine North and West London to be a bit nicer.

1) East
2) South
3) North
4) West

Order of sides of London you least want to be outside at night time.

London is hellishly more dirty than Leeds and a lot dirtier than most other cities, but youre right about the transport. It always pissed me off when locals moaned about it. The tube never let me down in 5 years. In fact, i hate getting round cities without it.

I don't understand where the "super"tram will fit...there's not enough room to swing a cat up Otley Road anyway.
But Leeds does have the magical "Guided Bus" system! which makes no difference to your journey time! and is just tempting to drive up.

Have you been to the Crépery where the Polar Bear used to be? It was on the telly the other week in a program about entrepeneurs. I loved the Polar Bear, but it was ace when it closed down because I bought 10 CDs for not much.

I loved the Polar Bear, in a sense it still lives on in our hearts, but in another, more acurate sense, it's dead and it's not coming back.

I would recommend the crépery, who would have known you can have a whole square meal revolve around crépes.

I once listened to a woman named Linda Oglesbisbisbis tell an "hilarious" anecdote about a Scotsman telling her he'd "just had a lovely big crepe". I walked past it today and scowled. I contemplated falling through the launderette floor but Bruce Springsteen persuaded me not to. I also found a Dawson's Creek annual in Oxfam but managed to restrain myself, and spotted an R&B Peter Crouch outside Somerfield. I need something to do tomorrow night, maybe I'll go sit and shove a crepe around whilst reading a book. Do they sell alcohol? I couldn't tell.
And is the Polar Bear in Grand Arcade shut? I think it is but I can't remember. What about Relics? Argh, we'll only have Borders (spits) soon.

Fab
10-27-2005, 04:07 PM
They don't sell alcohol, no, but you could take your own and threaten to glass them if they make something of it.

The Polar Bear in the Grand Arcade turned into a vinyl (kinky) shop over two years ago, it's owned by Jason who used to work in the Polar Bear and is dead good.
