View Full Version : Basement II, lyrics and tabs

On bumble's suggestion (to someone else, ha!), I thought I'd start this as a kind of repository/discussion of lyrics and tabs for the recently leaked Basement II songs.
I'll start -- this is my approximation of the lyrics for Abused:
Abused
now that everybody’s worn the expression
fact (?) that you wanted to use
it seems untrue now
but the funniest thing
is if it’s you now
to a perfect peace (??)
you may never understand this affliction,
although you feel the effects
you feel bruised now
body and mind
you feel used now
almost all of the time
and abused (x3)
Sunday morning and the (eye/out of my brother??)
watching the dead (?) moon pass
tell the news now
it’s supposed to behave (be hate?)
tell the truth now
you don’t know what you’re saying
you’ve been abused
abused (x7)
I know people see some evil intention
but the closer you get
the more you get confused now
why does everyone know that I’m abused now
didn’t want it to show
I'm unsure of the words in about 5 spots in there, so any input is appreciated. Listen along and post what you hear.
Edited to say if you haven't heard the previously unheard songs yet, go to the "It is officially time to shit yourself..." thread. There are Yousendit links on page 1 and 4, and raindogs has permanently hosted the songs on his site as well (not sure what page his link is on -- maybe 5?).

Just to get this started, here's what some other people have posted already.
kevinlong206 posted these lyrics:
Lyrics for #9 / New Disaster (a couple of unsure parts here, help?)
the ghost of your smile's always looking for new
bodies to haunt
and its been here and dissappeared
was hangin around a ???? for a while
gradually gone
its pleasing
and freezing
well i wonder what it is your after
keepin company with this disaster
looked all over town
got turned around
walked back through the mud
the kind you had left behind you
everybodys the same
in this long-?knowing? game
where every new blood
gets time to become resigned
now i wonder what it is your after
keepin company with this disaster
why you never try to tame your master
you just blow through the coals
blow through the coals
blow through the coals
'til everyone knows
that your smile is just a ghost
the ghost of your smile was seen on a body in the park
its old news
you see that its no use
waiting to start
waitin to lie
wait until dark
i told you man, i told you
well i wonder what it is your after
keepin company with this disaster
why you never try to tame your master

Here is Lisa's take on the lyrics to track #16:
No Name #16 (for now at least)
Wiped out in the city slick
Another sick rock n' roller acting like a dick
with cash??? _____??
Burning through the trash that piles up in this place
And fills up behind my empty face
Full of things that im not to do
You come over with all of your friends and
All their opinions I don't wanna know
And I'm looking over my shoulder
Looking away with nowhere to go
I run down to the corner lot
It's 45 past 2 I almost forgot to show
I got a date to make with mister so and so
After which
I wont care when you all start to bitch
And moan about being alone
You come over with all of your friends and
All their opinions I don't wanna know
And I'm looking over my shoulder
Lookin away with nowhere to go
Can't you just leave me alone?
You've already thrown all the sticks and stones
You had to send my way
Can't you just leave it at that?
And spare us both the bother
Cause I just bounced back, anyway
I got nothing that i want to do
More than make another song and, fuck you, to play
Whenever you make my life cliche
sorta ____???
In some little box with the name bullshit
You say to keep confusion away
You come over with all of your friends and
All their opinions I don't wanna know
And I'm looking over my shoulder
Lookin away with nowhere to go
You come over with all of your friends and
All their opinions I don't wanna know
And I'm looking over my shoulder
Lookin away
-so im stuck at two parts, maybe if i listened with headphones i might hear it right... i assume the first one is 'with cash' cause it would make sense, but it doesnt quite sound like hes saying 'with' maybe its 'burning' but the next sentence is 'burning' so that doesnt seem right... for the other part i cant make out what he's saying exactly... and i may have other parts wrong too so any input is great.

Lisa - this was what i heard when i listened to the song.
#16
Wiped out in the city slick
Another sick rock n' roller acting like a dick
**We don't catch**
Burning through the trash that piles up in this place
And fills up behind my empty face
Full of things that im not to do
You come over with all of your friends and
All their opinions I don't wanna know
And I'm looking over my shoulder
Looking away with nowhere to go

Lookin away with nowhere to go
Can't you just leave me alone?
You've already thrown all the sticks and stones
You had to send my way
Can't you just leave it at that?
And spare us both the bother
Cause I just *bounce* back, anyway
I got nothing that i want to do
More than make another song and, fuck you, to play
Whenever you make my life cliche
**So to fit**
In some little box with the *lame* bullshit
You say to keep confusion away
You come over with all of your friends and
All their opinions I don't wanna know
And I'm looking over my shoulder
Lookin away with nowhere to go
You come over with all of your friends and

In "Abused", I hear this (the first five verses):
now that everybody’s worn the expression
fact (?) that you wanted to use
it seems untrue now
but the funniest thing
is it fits you now
to a perfect "t" (??)

All but one, I think. One is live (right?) but all of the other ones are studio versions.
Basement II, like the "second" Basement record. The first one was going to be produced by Jon Brion and sounded more like Either/Or. He chucked that version and now we have Basement II.
Atleast that's what I've heard on here. :-p

Go to the "It is officially time to shit yourself" thread -- they are unfinished songs, demos mostly, and several of them have been heard before, but about 5 or 6 have not ever been leaked before.
They're really beautiful and worth checking out. :)

Saw this thread and had to change my shorts again.
This is getting ridiculous.
I'll try to get back with punctuated versions for contrast because...well, because that's what I do.
Actually, I find that punctuating Elliott's lyrics aids at times in deducing words as it underscores the intense logic of his lyrics. Just another tool...it's a scaffolding that can be removed later...or kept...whatever pleases...

The Worst Part is Almost Over
Mountains of hugs and I found this:
You think I'm unkind
But people aren't the way you think they are
They can't remember all the time
what it was you wanted
they paint you out in straight silhouette
don't you get the picture yet?
why you getting all upset?
the worst part is almost over
three's such a crowd
you outta tell me what you tell yourself
you ever gonna speak it aloud?
do I have to guess like everyone else?
with an iron will to walk the walk
and a glass jaw that can't be moved to talk
black eyes always watch the clock
the worst part's almost over
you let yourself be frozen by a doubt
you think I'm mean cos I call you out
you don't know what you're about
the worst part's almost over now
the worst part's almost over now, now, now

The only justification for that (other than it arrived that way) seems to me that these tracks might have been part of a reservoir Elliott kept for consideration while doing Basement and that a couple may in fact have been added to during Basement--I'm thinking of "Abused", which seems Either/Or in its musical bones to these ears, but has what sounds like late Basement era overdubs and vocals...but I could be dead wrong about all of this.

To me it sounds like songs considered for inclusion on basement from the either/or era. elliott said in interviews in the months before his death that he felt like he did when he was making either/or and a lot of songs he was considering were obviously from that era. we know one of the last things he recorded was the vocals for abused. i highly doubt that what we hear on this bootleg are from basement era recording. his voice was significantly different sounding when he recorded basement.
this may even be a tape elliott himself made of songs considered for inclusion on basement. Basement II might be a reference to the idea that the record he was making at the time of his death was really a second try at making the album since had already basically recorded an album a couple years earlier that was scraped. so who knows. its really all conjecture.

Yeah, it was one of the things that he recorded during Either/Or sessions, I believe. He added vocals and overdubs shortly before his death...

Everybody is the same in this long no-win game

High Times
coma kid taught me how
he'd come to follow you around
wherever you go
said i don't go where im supposed to go
and i dont go really anywhere you know
told me how he's driven by a curse
till he can't doubt into reverse
said i don't go where i'm supposed to go
and i don't go really anywhere you know
i made up my mind and i don't mind saying so
i went to meet you at central square
and when i couldnt find you there
i went walking around the city some more
people watching with a cold blank stare
and i saw your face in everyone i swear
seems i never get your kick quite right
i was walkin slow to a dirty dive
i was so sick and tired tryin to change your mind
when its so easy to disconnect mine
high times
high times
high times
yeah i feel fine

high times

Abused
now that everybody’s worn the expression
not that you wanted to use
it seems untrue now
but the funniest thing
is it fits you now
to a perfect tee
you may never understand this affliction,
although you feel the effects
you feel bruised now
body and mind
you feel used now
almost all of the time
been abused, abused, abused
Sunday morning in the aisle with my brother
watching the men in black
tell the youth how
they're supposed to behave
but tell the truth now
you don’t know what you’re saying
you’ve been abused
abused, abused, abused, abused, abused, abused, abused
Though the people see some evil intention
but the closer you get
the more you get confused how
why does everyone know?
been abused now
didn't want it to show
High Times

In the streets (of the wet/west/)(unaware)
But dont you get the picture yet?
Why you getting all upset
the worst parts almost over

Are you ever gonna speak aloud?
do i have guess like everyone else?
With iron will to walk the walk
amd a glass jaw that can't be moved to talk

You let yourself be frozen by doubt
you think i'm mean because i caught you out
you dont know what you're about
the worst parts almost over now
the worst parts almost over now
now, now.
New Disaster
The ghost of your smile
is always looking for
new bodies to haunt
and its been here
and disappeared
it's hanging around **aloof-loof**?? for awhile
gradually gone
it's pleasing
and freezing
Well I wonder what it is you're after
Keeping company with this disaster
You looked all over town
got turned around
to walk back through the mud
the kind you had left behind you
Everybody is the same
in this long knowing game
where every new blood
gets time to become resigned
Now I wonder what it is you're after
Keeping company with this disaster
Why you never tried to tame your master
You just blow through the coals
blow through the coals
blow through the coals
'til everyone knows
that you're smile is just a ghost
the ghost of your smile
was seen on a body in the park
it's old news
you see that it's no use
waiting to start
waiting to light
waiting 'til dark
I told you man
I told you
well I wonder what it is you're after
keeping company with this disaster
why you never tried to tame your master
Whatever
They come here alone
and they leave in two's
except for you and me
who just came to use
if you're all done
like you said you'd be
what are you doing
hanging out with me
why you telling me stuff
that's so blatantly untrue
If you'll be straight with me
i'll be straighter with you
if you're all done
like you said you'd be
what are you doing
hanging out with me
I haven't wanted to do anything
for a long time
but whatever you got right now
would probably suit me fine
if you're all done like you said be
what are you doing hanging out with me
I haven't wanted to do
anything for a long time
whatever you're doing now
would probably suit me fine
if you're all done
like you said you'd be
what are you doing
hanging out with me
hanging out with me
Another Standard Folk Song
He's a busted main line
but you oughta hear him out
bleeding fortified wine
out of the injury that i call my mouth
Trying to insult some
crazy fucker from the south
whose arrow comes to pick me out
and so i'm waiting
for a shot of white noise
don't wanna hear no
stupid screaming
little half assed middle class boys
'cos i got a headache
and i'm already full of useless stories
arrow come on pick me out
'cos i got a headache
and i'm already full of these useless stories
arrow come on pick me out
arrow come on pick me out
in broken air
broke/broken/grow

Another sick rock'n'roller acting like a dick
With cash
Burning through the trash

and fills up behind my empty face
Full of things that I'm not to do
You come over with all of your friends
and all their opinions I don't want to know
And I'm looking over my shoulder
Looking away with nowhere to go
I'm running down to the corner lights
It's forty-five past two and I almost forgot to show
I got a date to make with Mr. So-and-so

You come over with all of your friends

and I'm looking over my shoulder
Looking away with nowhere to go
Why can't you just leave me alone?
You've already thrown all the sticks and stones you had to send my way
Can't you just leave it at that?
and spare us both a bother cause I just bounce back anyway
I got nothing that I want to do
More than make another song and fuck you to play
Whenever you make my life cliche -inaudible-(So to fear?)
In some little box with all the labeled shit

I think you're right with the "so to fit" part, Lisa. Makes more sense than what I wrote. First time I heard that line, I through it said "Soda Film".
yeah the one i posted is pretty much complete except for that one line- with cash- its unclear, someone else heard something different, but that line makes most sense to me.

okay okay... on every interpretation i hear of #16 so far people have written:
make another song and, fuck you, to play
i hear:
another sonic "fuck you"
which makes more sense and i think that would make a good name for this song
well actually no, hes saying all he really cares about at this point is making more songs and singing them, hence:
I got nothing that i want to do
More than make another song and, fuck you, to play
makes much more sense than 'a sonic fuck you'
but, now that i listen, i see how you could hear that.

Someone else - tuh! ;) It probably is "with cash" but it does almost sound like there's another word after with ... but then i also think the guitar plays at the same time so maybe it's just that. I'll go with "with cash" then.
And yes it is "so to fit"
And i'd go with "another song, and fuck you" rather than "sonic fuck you".

i stand by what i said. the "fuck you" seems out of place other wise. like he randomly inserted "and fuck you" into the middle of the sentence ".. make another song to play."
Think about it:
I got nothing that I want to do more than make another sonic "fuck you" to play.
he's pissed off and all he wants to do is write a song that's basically a big "fuck you" to play. and listen close... you'll hear a "c" sound where you're hearing "and."
i'm right im right im right im right.... so there

Wow i'm just a lyric slut at the moment. i change my vote - i think it is "A sonic fuck you"
I want to make another sonic fuck you to play
I want to make another song and fuck you to play
I know these aren't the actual lyrics but this is basically what he would be saying in each one. The only one that makes sense is sonic fuck you. He's simply saying he wants to make another song that's one big "fuck you" to a certain person. I don't know what the other could even mean.
i see your point, but the whole song is him talking to someone else about how awful their treatment of him is.
another song and , fuck you (to that person), to play..
it might be sonic, i hear that too depending on how im listening to the song.. the song is directed at someone though, so saying fuck you to the person makes a lot of sense. i do that a lot..
it plays out in my head like when im having an arguement with someone about what i wanna do, i start to say something, they come back with some stupid comment, i say fuck you, as in no, and finish my sentence.. 'to play'
well thats my logic kids.. im overthinking this now :oh:
Mister Grieves

I agree with Lisa.
It's like the person interrupts his sentence, so he says "fuck you".
"I want to make another song - and fuck you - to play"
If he wanted to make another sonic "fuck you", he wouldn't have to add on "to play".
"I want to make another sonic fuck you" would be all he needed to say. Otherwise it'd be too wordy.
The word sonic would refer to it being aural, so he wouldn't need to reitterate the point that he's going to play it.
But that's just my opinion. Potato, Potahto. Regardless, it's an awesome song.

with that logic he wouldnt need to at it to the word song either... as we all know that a song it to be played... so neener

okay i found another error i hear that nobody's addressed in #16
he repeats frequently:
i'm looking over my shoulder
looking away
(which is how everyone is hearing it)
but i hear
i'm looking over my shoulder
booking away
listen to it!
my main argument for this is that it seems that you can clearly hear a b sound and not an l sound... but:
it also just makes more sense and is less redundant than looking over my shoulder, looking away... please feel free to jump on me and beat me with your stubborn sticks

I still agree with some dude ... if anything adding fuck you in the middle of a sentence just to direct it at someone is making it too wordy.
If he wanted to say fuck you he could simply say fuck you to them, but he doesn't want to - maybe it wouldn't have as big an impact, but through song it is a sonic fuck you. I think it does need to be made clear therefore that he is going to play it. If he said "I got nothing more i want to do, than make another sonic fuck you" i think that could still be taken to mean a gesture, not a song.
Also this still fits with it being a song about being angry with someone about their awful treatment of him. The sonic fuck you is just more of an Elliott way of putting this across - when has he ever been so direct as to aim abuse at someone in such an everyday way as to just put Fuck You into the middle of a line?
Anyways this is just my opinion again! :)

i just realized also that the "to play" part is not the end of the sentence. it makes more sense seen in context:
I got nothing that I want to do more than make another sonic "fuck you" to play whenever you make my life cliche, so to fit in some little box with all the lame bullshit you say to keep confusion away.
i mean... doesnt that make like a lot more sense to you than randomly adding fuck you in the middle of a sentence?

I think I agree with this...because the punctuation works perfectly that way.
Also, definitely 'booking.'
That's my two cents.
And now I must leave on an extended Journey.
However, when I get back I expect all lyrical issues in these new songs to be resolved, AND NO MISTAKES.
*gazes sternly, cracks whip, ducks spitballs*
I thought it was Sordid, but Sonic is a better preoccupation-- and both imply "song" anyway, as has been pointed out-- to say Song seems unnecessary/redundant because of the following "to play" (i.e., a song)-- to say Song would be exposition

I definately hear "booking away" now.
I still don't know about "sonic fuck you", though. But whatever, it doesn't really matter. Like I said earlier, potato potahto. The only one who truly knows is Elliott.

I think that you tune your HIGH E string down 1 step to D, and the you put a capo somewhere kinda high around 5-7th fret.

Here's my best take on track 16:
Unknown Title:
Wiped out in the city slick,
another sick rock n' roller acting like a dick, waiting.
Cash burning through the trash that piles up in this place
and fills up behind my empty face, full of things that I'm not to do.
You come over with all of your friends and
all their opinions I don't wanna know,
and I'm looking over my shoulder

It's forty-five past two, I almost forgot to show.
I got a date to make with mister so and so, after which,
I won't care when you all start to bitch and moan about being alone.
You come over with all of your friends and
all their opinions I don't wanna know,

Can't you just leave me alone?
You've already thrown all the sticks and stones you had to send my way.
Can't you just leave it at that,
and spare us both the bother 'cause I just bounce back anyway?
I got nothing that I want to do
more than make another sonic "fuck you" to play,
whenever you make my life cliche, so to fit
in some little box with all the lame bullshit you say to keep confusion away.
You come over with all of your friends and

I don't hear "sent down to jail". I hear "sat down in jail". In Audacity, I split the stereo tracks and put the left channel on solo so I could hear the vocals better.
And I heard:
sat down in jail with this friend of mine
who never closed both eyes

Bonjour. I was thinking... regarding the lyrics for # 16... Instead of 'sonic'.. or 'song and', would 'sonnet fuck you' make sense? or sordid? It sounds like hes saying sonnet. I could be losing my mind though. That's probably closer to the truth. Anywho, Hi! i'm new, i've been a lurker for a while though... I most likely wont be devoting much time to posting after this.. but I will continue to read. Thanks for the wonderful songs! g'day

Its Storyville. It fits perfectly.

In Storyville
I fucked a cop
Amped Up On Prescription Pills
It brought my heart to a stop
Im gonna tell you
Theres a riot coming
like a drug in the water
a punch in the stomach
makes sons into daughters
I met a girl on the square
You show me how to kill my cares
But once thats done then theres nothing to do
times running backwards for me and you
Theres a riot coming
like a drug in the water
a punch in the stomach
makes sons into daughters
my body's running
but I dont see why you bother
sat down in jail with this friend of mine
who never closed both his eyes
But one was shut all the time
to cover the thing he was scared of
while he watched with the other
there was a riot coming
Like a drug in the water
A Punch In The stomach
Makes sons into daughters
Theres a riot coming
Theres a riot coming
Theres a riot coming

I am 100% sure that these are the correct lyrics.

OK, having listened to this (and the others!) repeatedly on headphones, this is what I'm hearing on Riot Coming:
In Storyville, I fucked a cop
amped up on prescription pills
that brought my heart to a stop
I wanna tell you
there's a riot coming
like a drug in the water
a punch in the stomach
makes sons into daughters
I met a girl on the square
who taught me how to kill my cares
once that’s done, man, there's nothing to do
time's running backwards for me and you
there's a riot coming
like a drug in the water
a punch in the stomach
makes sons into daughters
my body's running but I don't see why it bothers
sat down in jail with this friend of mine
who never closed both his eyes
but one was shut all the time
to cover the thing he was scared of
while he watched with the other
there was a riot coming
like a drug in the water
a punch in the stomach
makes sons into daughters
there’s a riot coming
there’s a riot coming
there’s a riot coming
It definitely sounds like "Storyville" (even though I had no idea that was the name of the red light district in New Orleans!), "fucked a cop" rather than "fucked up cop", and I hear "wanna" rather than "gonna", and yeah, "sat down in jail" is what I'm hearing there.
On Track 16, it really does sound like "a sonic fuck you to play" -- it's not something I had thought of, but I can hear the "c" sound in there.
And I'm probably way off with this, but I wonder if the title "From a Poisoned Well" mentioned in the MTV article is actually the title for Track 16 -- not that I would know, but the song really does kinda sound like a response to someone, even if it isn't Sam. Especially the part about sticks and stones -- that whole verse. Just throwing that out there. :-o

he waved hello, silent like a mime

i won't walk the stairs with you tonight
going nowhere

she said you got a lot of things to learn
going nowhere
I saw you move a certain way
missed you a lot...
return to this abandoned place
should a been forgot
echoes drown our conversation out
echoes that only seem to bring about
a silent expression
easy when allowed
going nowhere
the steps made a pattern

Just had a semi-epiphany about one of the verses in New Disaster: it's not "long-knowing game" it's "long no-win game", like so:
everybody’s the same
in this long no-win game
where every new blood
gets time to become resigned
Also, I'm pretty sure it's "was hanging around aloofly for a while" earlier in the song, and not "was hanging around then flew for awhile" . . .
Love these songs.
Edited because I left a word out, like a big ol' dummyhead. :(

Hello. On the choruses of Abused it sound like he alternates between the two words: abused & acused. I also have a little different take on the ending. Tell me what ya' think :-D
3) Abused
Now that everybody’s worn the expression
'not that you wanted to use...'
seems untrue now,
but the funniest thing
is it fits you now
to a perfect tee.
You may never understand this affliction,
although you feel the effects
you feel bruised now
body and mind
you feel used now
almost all of the time.
Been abused, acused, abused.
Sunday morning in the aisle with my brother
watching the men in black
tell the youth how
they're supposed to behave.
Tell the truth now.
You don’t know what you’re saying.
You’ve been abused, abused, acused, abused
acused, abused, acused.
I know that people see some evil intention
but the closer you get
the more you get confused how...
Why does everyone know?
Been abused now.
Didn't want it to show.

Hmm, that's an interesting take on it. I definitely hear abused the first three times, but when he gets to the second chorus, it sounds like "abused, abused, abused, abused, accused, abused, accused" . . .
And I think the last verse as you have it is right -- I think someone else had it as that too, maybe with different punctuation.
Cool!
I will say that I'm having trouble hearing it as "men in black" -- that might be what it is, but . . . it's not quite sounding right to me.

first off - thanks for starting on the tabs guys - much appreciated - especially abused which i can't get out of my head.
quick question about sticks and stones and didn't want to start a new thread - this seemes like as good a place as any. wasn't mentioned by charlie as something recorded for basement - but also don't recall ever hearing it on a bottleg or even discussed here as an unrleased song. can't place it in an era - would sound good on either/or or even as far back as roman candle to me. did a board search but haven't seen anyone talking about it - anyone? this song knocked me on my ass - to think he had gems like this lying around is astounding

For the most part, the unreleased songs we discuss are ones that Elliott played live. There are very few that we have heard about otherwise... the instrumental version of "See You in Heaven," "Let's Turn the Record Over," "From a Poisoned Well." And of course, we have no idea what these songs sound like.
The people who have heard unreleased music on the board don't seem to like to talk about any songs until after the songs get leaked.

Here's one I couldn't find in the sweet adeline lyric section. Does anybody have a transcription of See My City Dead yet?
19) Taking A Fall
Took a light medicine.
Horrible in a hurry.
Lots of plans go awry.
Nothin's wrong. I won't worry.
But I roll for a dollar on your advice
and I lost you bad 'cause that's the luck of the dice.
Taking a fall. You don't know who to call.
You don't know who, do you? Taking a fall.
Why do the neighbor's kids have to scream when they're playing?
You know I never can understand what you're saying
and you won't hear a word out of me
'cause I know how indifferent someone can be.
Taking a fall. You don't know who to call.
You don't know who, do you? Taking a fall.
There's someone to call
but you don't know who, do you? Taking a fall,
but you don't know who, do you? Taking a fall.
You don't know who, do you?

Bradleybee, yours is very similar to mine -- I am sure of my interpretation of the first line, though:
Taking a Fall
Took it like medicine,
Horrible, in a hurry
Lots of plans go awry,
Nothing’s wrong, I won’t worry
But I rolled for a dollar on your advice
And I lost you bad, ‘cos that’s the luck of the dice
Taking a fall
You don’t know who to call,
You don’t know who, do you
Taking a fall

Taking a fall

You don’t know who, do you
Taking a fall
When there’s someone to call
But you don’t know who, do you
Taking a fall
But you don’t know who, do you
Taking a fall
Well, you don’t know who, do you
I'll have to re-listen to See My City Dead later to figure that one out.

Please listen and review these, 'cause there are several spots (see ??s!) where I'm just not sure:
Amanda Cecilia
Black and blue from passing around
Whitey says Lenny ain’t a hit no more? (??)
Cecilia Amanda, I don't want to see you get like you got before
Another . . . (vation?) (A nullification?) in a new party dress yesterday
Dancing on a remnant (?) scratch
In a place where lonely men pay to make their opposites match
Little Miss Amanda wants to know how long you're going to be gone
She asked me can I fix it so the record plays the rest of her song
‘Cos every remembrance of you has been buried below
Every memory that I unhappily know
I’m sorry for you, and your kid
The poems (?) you promised and you never did
She asked me are you a pretty dancer
But I don’t think I’m gonna answer
Black and blue from passing around
Why do you send me back to your daily score?
You got a little baby now, I don’t wanna see you ‘round here no more
Amanda put on her new party dress yesterday
Dancing to a record you scratched
Some dealing amateur actor making opposites match

These have been posted several times, collated and vetted by the Expert Multitudes of Sweet Addy (accept no substitute):
Amanda Cecilia
Black and blue from passing around—Whitey says, “Lady ain’t a hit no more.”
Cecilia Amanda, I don’t want to see you get like you got before—
Another patient in a party dress yesterday, dancing on a permanent scratch
In a place where lonely men pay to make their opposites match.
Little Miss Amanda wants to know how long you’re going to be gone,
And she asked me can I fix it so your record plays the rest of her song,
Cause every remembrance of you has been buried below,
Every memory that I unhappily know.
I’m sorry for you and your kid,
The things you promised that you never did.
She asked me are you a pretty dancer,
But I don’t think I’m gonna answer.
Oh, black and blue from passing around while you fake me back to the daily score.
If you got a little baby now, I don’t wanna see you around here no more.
Ah, Amanda put on her new party dress yesterday, dancing to a record you scratched.
I’m some dealing amateur actor making opposites match.

in some little box with all the labeled shit you say to keep confusion away.
Hey Folks, I think that makes the most sense and, to me, it most clearly sounds like that.

That is possibly the saddest, and yet most powerful elliott lyric. It just sums up so much.

awesome! I've been really liking this song since this new version was released.
one line that I hear different is this:
Got no interest now in your dress and your kids your cheap ex-love letters.
I hear it as:
Got no interest now in undressing you kids with cheap angst love letters
which makes sense to me because that's what I'm sure a lot of rock stars see the industry as... a good way to get laid!

maybe its addressing you kids?
Cos undressing and kids is just so wrong together
I think the first line of Abused is
Now that everybody's worn the expression
the fact that you wanted to use it seems untrue now
but the funniest thing is that it fits you now to a perfect 'T'
what was said about this song above is so true. Sad as they come. It honestly sounds so damaged and fragile the way his voice goes from being under his breath to being falsetto and then he starts howling (the only word i can think fits) 'Abused'.....its incredibly powerful.

Hmm, being one of said Multitudes, I believe in the thread where we were transcribing this song, it was generally agreed upon that the first line was:
"Black and blue from passing around while he says 'This lady ain't a hit no more'."
Also, most thought it was "Another vision in a party dress". But I always heard "Another patient in a parting dress" (as in a hospital gown that parts up the back)

Thought I'd post my transcription of the "Either/Or" lyrics, as I don't think the ones on Sweet Adeline are totally accurate. I love that Burt-Bacharach-style, "Walk On By" line break when he sings "One day you'll know what you're talking about, I can hardly imagine--it, until then I'll be..." Sweet. :-D
EITHER/OR
The strong are stubborn now
and they're innocent while at war.
Brave or bored? Either/or.
Sometimes I ricochet from the past
and at times the future I’ve already had before.
Champion or chore? Either/or.
I write the pages you rip out,
back in their places again,
one day you’ll know what you’re talking about
I can hardly imagine it,
until then i’ll be
filling in these blanks that you create
every time you win some petty score,
posing as hardcore, oh yeah, either/or.
Look at the spin chief, battered and broken,
clutching a plastic rose,
we’re all in the downpour you carry around for
trashing a lifestyle you’ve never known
It’s a useful dream that makes
quite an entertaining show and not much more.
Up against and for, either/or

Nah. That was another "Amanda Cecelia" thread. I think there are upwards of 17 now.
But the version above is genuine and bonafide as it hails from the Official Amanda Cecelia Thread (accept no substitute) and is absolutely perfect in any sense you could imagine.
God saw our trials here Below and actually appeared to me with the lyrics on a tablet.

For what it's worth, Way Back When this first surfaced, this was arrived at:
Either Or
You’re strong and stubborn now in an endless symbolic war,
Brave or bored, either or.
Sometimes I ricochet from the past and at times a future I’ve already had before,
Champion a chore, either or.
I’ll write the pages you rip out, back in their places again.
One day you’ll know what you’re talking about—I can hardly imagine that until then
I’ll be filling in these blanks that you create every time you win some petty score,
Posing as hardcore, oh yeah, either or.
Ah ha, etc.
Look at the spin chief, battered and broken, clutching a plastic rose.
We’re all in the downpour you carry around for trashing a lifestyle you’ve never known.
It’s a useful dream that makes quite an entertaining show and not much more.
Up against and for, either or.
I've never been totally satisfied with the transcription (what else is new?).
I really like what you did with the first stanza. That nails it. It's clearly a question:
You’re strong and stubborn now in an endless symbolic war.
Brave or bored? Either or.
And that little touch there at the beginning is really important to the song's drift.
Made my day.

Thought I'd post my interpretation of what the lyrics are for Another Standard Folk Song (aka Crazy Fucker):
Another Standard Folk Song
He’s a busted main line, but you oughtta hear him out
Bleeding fortified wine out of the injury that I call my mouth
Trying to insult some crazy fucker from the south
Whose arrow comes to pick me out
And so I’m waiting for a shot of white noise
Don’t wanna hear no stupid, screaming, little half-assed middle-class boy
Because I've got a headache, and I’m already Full of useless stories
Arrow, come pick me out
Because I've got a headache, and I’m already Full of these useless stories
Error, come on pick me out
Error, come on pick me out
A broken arrow
Feel free to chime in with your interpretations! :-D
