So I've been using an MBox forever and I love it but one thing that bugs me is the playback/recording knob. If I turn it all the way to recording then all I hear is whatever's coming in through the mic so I have to turn it at least partially towards playback. The problem is this creates a playback "double" in my headphones that lags maybe 1/4 of a second behind what I'm recording which can make it very tricky to get lyrics or solos correctly timed. I'm sure there's something I'm missing - is there a way to turn off audio playback of the track you're recording?

I'd guess something like turn off the 'monitor' option of the track you're recording. What sequencer you using?

I think you can use it with other things too though.

yeah, using protools. Sorry I didn't mention it, I thought mbox was exclusively pro tools.

Very simple solution - mute the track you're recording, while allowing all the others to play normally.

The problem is latency, which basically occurs because, as you could probably guess (or might know), it takes a small amount of time for Pro Tools to process, record, and play back in real time what you're recording in the moment. Very high-end equpiment still has this problem, although, and I could be wrong, it's small enough not to cause as much of a problem. Getting rhythm down on a M-Box while listening to real time playback is very annoying. I do what I recommended above, just mute the track itself.

the MBox comes with Pro Tools included in the price, and it'd be foolish not to use it. However, Apple bought out Steinberg and now has all of their Final Cut Pro programmers and Steinberg's Logic programers working together....watch out, cause Apple is gonna drop a fucking bomb on the digital recording industry before too long, and it'll be compatible with EVERY interface.

One quick question - are you using two hard drives on your computer or just one? I'll tell you why I ask after you answer.

Two, and I know why ;) All my programs/OS are on my smaller hard drive and all my mp3s, movies, and pro tools files go on my bigger hard drive. Duh! I can't believe I didn't think to just mute the track. Thanks :)

Go forth and record in peace.
