LOUISE: i need to find some elctronic shit that's tight enough to catch my attention, but none of that long-winded shit that just tires me out.

RECOMMENDATIONS PLEASE!

Aphex Twin. Albums: "I Care Because You Do" and "Drukqs" are okay for people new to the sound.

Audiobullys: More dancey but still great IMO. Try downloading the singles: "Baby Shot Me Down" or "We Dont Care". We Dont Care is funny

Then breakbeat/d 'n' b artists/tunes you might enjoy:

Adam F - Circles (cant recommend this enough)
Logistics - Together
Commix - Herbie
Codename John - The Pussy

Go get some Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Second Toughest in the Infants and Beaucoup Fish are all outstanding, or just buy the Singles collection.
Leftism by Leftfield is also utterly bloody essential, and I'd also recommend 'In Sides' by Orbital for the more psychedelic stuff

You're an audio engineer, so the first thing I recommend is an album by cEvin Key, called The Ghost Of Each Room. He uses Reaktor, Korgs, and some old synthesizers so well you wouldn't believe it's all recent (2001). It's on Metropolis Records, and you can find it anywhere in Chicago, really (but mostly smaller shops).

Also, do look into anything by the group Twilight Circus. They are more dub, but they're great. There's also a group called Venetian Snares that's great, the songs are hit-or-miss but holy shit, when he hits...

Aphex Twin (Of course) and Gary Numan

Electronica? Trance? House? What!

Gary Numan! Start at the start (ok, no not the very start, but near enough).

TheImplodingVoice
09-14-2005, 01:40 PM
Talking about start, you should listen to Krafwerk..they are one of my all time favourite bands.

Also if you're looking for something a little bit more "experimental" (hate that term) check Otomo Yoshide and Ikue Mori!

Tago Mago
09-14-2005, 01:59 PM
And if you like Kraftwerk, don't hesitate to check out Bruce Haack.

I thought someone else had, but whilst I'm thinking about them, you absolutely have to get some Broken Spindles, it's a one man affair and it's absolutely amazing.

I love it when people who do not listen to electronic music, and probably even Kraftwerk, throw half-assed generalizations on the people who listen to both. Godspeed you little internet, godspeed.

About Kris' Kraftcheese's kraftwerk comment:
He does't like Kraftwerk because they don't have solos or quasi meaningful lyrics about being sad or angry.

I think Kris thinks of music as a vulgar circus, instead of an art form, therefore his criteria for judging a song includes silly stuff like finger velocity. If he really cared about musical habilities exclusevely, he should be analyzing harmony instead of technique though...

yes. although it can be said that a lot of the bands he likes are not particularly technically gifted.

I love it how when any of you try to put me down you never have any facts. I know I shouldn't expect much from a Mexican, but shame on the rest of you.

I don't like music that relies too heavily on computers rather than actual instruments. Sue me, if you still can't get over it, suck my dick.

Gee, I didn't know a synthesizer was a computer.

Nice racial jab, btw.

Synths=lame

Reginald I. Perrin

I suppose you'll be throwing away all your rap records, then...seeing as all those synths and samplers that they use are so lame. Those rap records that rely almost entirely on "computers". Eh?

Tago Mago

I'd also love to hear what makes a synthesizer any less of an actual instrument than an electric guitar.

That's what I was thinking..what the fuck is a Real instrument?

Fab
09-21-2005, 12:47 PM
oh no, I've heard that argument against using synths a million times and i just can't be bothered anymore. one of my friends tried to convince me that a synth was in fact a poor man's piano, and wouldn't have it that synths were in fact different instuments.

You lost the right to call anything boring when you started liking Damien Rice.

It's an entirely different genre of music.

I don't like synths in rock and roll for the most part.

Nah, it's Ping Pong Bitches as far as I know. It's likely that "the magnificent" and the shorter version are the same though.

And I think I'm too sick still to go anywhere tomorrow. :\ I have half-minute long loud coughing/hacking sessions too, I would interrupt Trischa's dancing.

This is the kind of thread I always end up discovering new music from.... it's the best thing about the "long tail" and music.... before u had to read in a magazine or hunt around in a record store to find something cool -- which made the choices always subject to the "gatekeeping" of editors and music store buyers and etc... -- which would lead inevitably to mediocrity and the prevalence of "poser music" -- i.e. stuff that you want to like because you think it's cool, not because you really like it. Music journalism especially creates high-profiles for really lame stuff, because journalists are always looking behind their backs, trying to profile something that they think in 2 years people will think they were cool for liking "way back when".... I GREATLY prefer the democratic nature of threads like these, where people simply list their tastes and you can just look something up on itunes or youtube and check it out for yourself....

These days I'm really into techno and techno/rock and stuff like that -- try searching for these songs:

Thomas Falke "Revolution On The Dance Floor"
Groove Cutter "My Shooter"
Control One "Just A Little Bit"
Ian Carey "Redlight"
Kevin Weg "Dead Radio"

I don't usually go for techno but these are sort of like a wierd crossover between rock and techno/trance.

Here are also some downloads with some other cool stuff too -- http://www.electricfilebox.com/tracks
