View Full Version : I listened to TFE today...

And I still like it. A lot.
Sorry Kris, but your prediction that this record would eventually turn to liquid shit in our ears (just like MSOTS) fails to hold up. At least in my case.
I discovered something while listening to it, too. Even two months after the record's release, I can't accurately say whether TFE is better or worse than the Pumpkins, because it's just so goddamned different from the Pumpkins stuff. And I find that wonderful.
"Now (and Then)" takes me to special places.
That is all.

I listen to the whole thing regularly...
Ok folks, let's get this in writing shall we? I'm sick of people insisting that TheFutureEmbrace is fantastic, and anywhere near the same level as the Pumpkins' work.
Fact : TheFutureEmbrace is a bland, boring, and uncomfortable sounding album. It has a total of 3 good songs (TheCameraEye, DIA, and Pretty, Pretty STAR). There are a handful of average tracks, but it's the real shitters of songs that weigh the album down until it sinks into patheticness. And there are a lot of them - All Things Change, A100, Now (And Then), I'm Ready, Walking Shade, and Sorrows (In Blue).
People need to stop praising this thing simply because it's got Billy Corgan's name on the cover. I'd bet my first born that in 6 months time, the number of people who come to terms with the above fact will increase considerably.

I agree. The vocals have a tensile energy that fits into the mechanization of the rest of the music in a satisfying way--the almost automatic force of the rhythm and guitar sequences dictating the vocals and such. A lot of the initial criticism of the album seemed to point to lyrical shortcomings, but it seems like the overall purpose demands abbreviated or vague lyrics to emphasize the ultimate control of the non-human musical elements.
And you could maybe interpret some deeper meaning from that--that technology has become something that humans now live to the rhythm of rather than control, or that the technologized (a real word?) world is part of an even more technical divine plan in which human invention is only a part, etc..
In another thread (yes, much too lazy to find it) somebody clever pointed out that Real Love from Machina II was a "wall" of "brittle" sound, and that the production seemed appropriate. I think TFE follows a similar aesthetic--only allowing a little more access into the sound, opening up the "wall" while maintaining the brittleness and rigidity of the individual working parts.
In other words, OMG its like totally teh machine from teh machina mystery...

I dont like A100 or Walking Shade, but the others are cool. Or maybe it's not "rockin" enough for you? Who aare your influences?
Your post lacked substance my friend, I dont mind if you dont like the album, but don't insist it IS shit when you can't prove otherwise. You're forgetting that what you think in your head is your opinion, not the truth.
And liking it because its got cr0gans name on it? bulloni man. most of my friends, upon scanning through my CD's, go "Billy Corgan?! Who?" to which I usually look a bit forlorn and try and dodge the issue!! heh heh
At the end of the day, Kris has said he doesnt like it because it's electronic, and that's cool, he likes harder shit more. I happen to like Electronic music, and therefore see this album as a decent piece of work, that is somewhat original (even if crogans 80's influences can be heard throughout) and completely seperate from the pumpkins.

So what if he doesnt like the album? no one cares, and he's choosing a stupid place to talk about it, dont ya think? what can be his only aim from badmouthing TFE on a Crogan board? to me, he's either trying to get a rise, or he's a fucking silly cunt. I just dig the instrumentation; there were some things I wasn't sure about while listening to the album at first, especially if you link it to "rocking" Pumpkins, but I think it's fantastic and Corgan's most focused work (if not his most "sublime" work) since "Mellon Collie". It's a wonderful headphones record, and my personal favorite at the moment for running around the lake at 4:00 a.m.
Only the new Sleater-Kinney and Ravonettes have really caught my ear this year on a similar level.

the fans won the lawsuit? Seriously? Where did you hear that (link maybe)? I hate to hear that because I thought it was stupid of them to sue him in the first place.
I like TFE. Camera Eye is probably my favorite. I usually listen to Camera Eye, DIA, and I'm Ready. I really like To Love Somebody but it's kinda sad and it bugs me because I can't bring myself to listen to it when my mom's home. She liked Michael Bolton back in the day and I had to hear his version one too many times and when she's home I think of Michael Bolton's version (blech). It is a good song, and I think Billy did a good job with the cover, it's a shame I have that connotation in my head.
If I'm in the right mood I can listen to the whole thing. Just the other day I put it on intending to just listen to my 3 usual songs and I just couldn't skip and listened to the whole thing. It was good.
It's not the best thing he's ever done, which I think is a lot of people's problem, and it is different from his other stuff. But like Adore did, it's growing on me still and has it's own charm. It's far from bad.

I listen to the album every now and again on the way to work...it's ok, but it aint brilliant....there's no passion left....But Camera Eye, Mina Loy and WalkingShade are fantastic....He needs to be in a band, not a solo artist. I think he works better when bouncing off other musicians....I don't care to much for the way he sings anymore...he tries to sing 'proper', if that makes any sense...

I listened to it yesterday for the first time in 2 weeks. I still love The Camera Eye, Mina Loy, All Things Change, and Strayz. The beauty of Now (and Then) really gets me everytime. It feels passionate to me, just calmly so.
I find the album can stand on it's own, it's nice, good music.
I love the heavy guitar, screaming, angry Billy who yells fuck all the time too. :)

Actually, Pitchfork gave TFE one of its best reviews, but even that was an average review. I like a lot of things about the album, but it's been a couple of weeks since I've listened to it.
It's grown on me, though there are still a good few songs I can't be arsed with.

Seeing as though opinions are neither right nor wrong and therefore there is no way of proving either, why shouldn't I insist that the album is shit? Can't I stand firmly behind my opinion? Does the word 'think' really mean fuck all? In a thread about the opinions of this album, shouldn't the word 'think' be taken for granted?
The album is shit not because I don't like the style, or the sound, or anything like that. It is shit because the songs are badly written songs. They're just boring. I love the Pumpkins, I even love the odd Zwan song, and my music collection covers a wide range of styles and genres. But songs like I'm Ready and All Things Change bore me senseless.
I guarantee you that if TheFutureEmbrace was the debut album by a completely unknown artist, no one would give a flying fuck and the artist would be dropped by their record label 6 months later.

I happen to think youre quite amusing too, but quit being such a longhead about Corgan man! If you don;t like him that's cool, but I think your review is a bit OTT. It's not poorly written at all, I dare you to write something that competes with it, it's just in a completely different genre. You slagging off the writing for some of TFE is like saying Joy Division, New Order, The Cure couldnt write good songs. I appreciate your sentiments fully, as I hate a lot of the tunage that gets bigged up on blamo, but really man you're going about it in the wrong way.

Once upon a time
Not so long ago
Tommy used to work on the docks
Union’s been on strike
He’s down on his luck...it’s tough, so tough
Gina works the diner all day
Working for her man, she brings home her pay
For love - for love
She says we’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got
’cause it doesn’t make a difference
If we make it or not
We’ve got each other and that’s a lot
For love - we’ll give it a shot
Chorus:
Whooah, we’re half way there
Livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it - I swear
Livin’ on a prayer
Tommy’s got his six string in hock
Now he’s holding in what he used
To make it talk - so tough, it’s tough
Gina dreams of running away
When she cries in the night
Tommy whispers baby it’s okay, someday
We’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got
’cause it doesn’t make a difference
If we make it or not
We’ve got each other and that’s a lot
For love - we’ll give it a shot
Chorus
We’ve got to hold on ready or not
You live for the fight when it’s all that you’ve got
