I THINK a film score is written for the movie, but a soundtrack is a collection of other artists works that teh production team felt suited the movie.
I think so anyway. Harry Gregson-Williams makes phat film scores.

Originally, there wasn't a difference. They were, for the most part, synonymous.
Back in the old days, the music to films were put out on vinyl as simply "original music by", which goes either ways these days. These include conductors, symphonies and what have you, like John Williams, Henry Mancini, Arthur Lyman.
Soundtracks, in the loosest way of defining it, is simply a collection of songs that artists made for the film, or even just included from their own LP's to be put into the film. This goes all the way from The Big Chill to soundtracks like Stealth.
These days, the difference between the score and a soundtrack is pretty much laid out in those two terms only. John Debney, Graeme Revell, Angelo Badalamenti... these are mostly score-workers, while any other artist can just do a soundtrack.
The above poster pretty much was dead-on in how he said it. I just thought I'd expound on it.
I would also like to mention I rewatched the '78 version of Invasion Of the Body Snatchers the other night, and the score was one of the most peculiar I had ever heard. Off to find the CD...

The original one was slightly well put together... but most of it was so boring, like putting the Propellerheads and Monster Magnet on it. Props for Meat Beat, Ministry and Prodigy.

The best songs on Kill Bill weren't on those CD's.
It's a shame.

that score is pretty fucking great.
my favorite score and soundtrack are fairly predictable, given my taste... Until the End of the World. it's one of the only Revell scores i dig - and the sound track reunited the talking heads for a song. the score for the good the bad and the ugly is a close runner up in my book (i cannot think of a score that so completely defined an entire genre). of course, i probably owe an absurd amount of credit to the pump up the volume soundtrack for helping me to define my taste in music.
