Does anyone know this film?

I remember watching it as a kid and thinking it was excellent. But! All I can remember about it was :

- the main character was a little boy
- he discovers that there's this portal thing under his bed, which transports him to a whole new world
- this whole new world is populated by 'jim henson puppet' type creatures, one of which becomes his best mate
- it's live action, not animation

and, umm, that's all. If anyone has a clue what this movie is called could you let me know?

That sounds to me like the movie "Little Monsters" with Fred Savage. It was Ok, a good children's movie.

I fucking nearly had that movie memorized when I was a kid. An ending with a Talking Heads song... kick ass.
