View Full Version : What's a Black Session?

When I'm looking at concert recordings, I occasionally come across one that is labled "Black Session." I have a Siamese Dream Black Session that is all acoustic and quite awesome, I also have a Radiohead Black Session that features the songs from The Bends. Judging by these two performances, I'd say that a "black session" is a performance that is intended to introduce a band's new material to the public prior to the release of a new album, but I want to make sure I'm right about this.

Black session.
I like the sound of that. Many meanings.
Dirty, depressed, unexpressed.
New material to me is white more than black.

But it could mean dark, undercover, secretive. Or maybe they were opening for a hip-hop headliner.

'black session' recordings might be a french radio thing.
i've got black session recordings from Suede & mazzy star that are both sourced from french radio. maybe france's answer to a Peel session?

Yes, that's what I've found as well. On some other BBS:
the show is called "black sessions" and its hosted on national french radio by a man named bernard lenoir. it's like the peel sessions of france.

Off-topic, but curious...
Chopstick, are you working at Wright-Patt AFB?

Chopstick, are you working at Wright-Patt AFB? No, and I probably never will. There is no work at WPAFB for officers with a Space and Missile classification. It's just a bunch of engineers. I hate engineers. The only thing worse than a nerdy engineer is an outgoing nerdy engineer. Today I met this engineer who was a friend of some close friends of mine. He kept yapping to me about flight sim games and firearms... but mostly firearms. Do people automatically assume that any military person gives a fuck that you want to fire a .50 cal revolver before you die? I don't.
I'll put it in equation form: If [TALKING] > 3[LISTENING] ; Then [SHUT THE FUCK UP]

Space and Missile classification? That sounds pretty nifty. What is it you're doing? Are you on teams that launch military satellites into orbit, or maintaining our ICBMs or research or something?
Main reason I asked... Last week was my vacation, and since I haven't been there in more than a decade, my parents and I went down to the US Air Force Museum. It was awesome. It was especially kewl to go then because they have "Bocks car" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bockscar), the B-29 that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki there... The sixtieth anniversary of that was three days ago -- August 9th. They moved a lot of stuff from around the plane... They musta been planning for some sort of ceremony or something that would draw a significant crowd.
They added a whole new hangar!!! And they took all the missiles and put them into a special rotunda-type thing! Holy crap! Last time I went, it was just two hangars.
Anyways, of course, you can see the base in plain view, and it's pretty huge, I gotta say. There are a lot more buildings than I thought.

Yeah, Satellites or ICBMs. I'll find out which system I'll be working on once I graduate from WSU and go to tech school. But no research. That is for engineers.
I was at the museum quite recently, too. Actually, I'm going again tomorrow with some relatives from out of town. It's a great place. Last year we cadets held our formal Dining Out in the modern flight hangar. Remember that big open space in the middle, right in front of the F-22? They set up tables there for big events.
Yeah WPAFB is huge. It also houses AFIT, which is the AF's own grad school. Rumor says that we're also holding the aliens we found at Area 51 somewhere at WPAFB. My cadet friends take advantage of their base passes to go to the Class 6, which is, I believe, the only place in Ohio where you can legally buy Everclear. Driving around the base is fun. They have some intersections with no stop signs--only yield signs.

Yes, that's right. For dance music records in Britain, the records are given around to DJ's etc on white labels if they don't have a label behind them yet.

I believe the show is called "C'est Lenoir" which is the name of the host, but also French for "the black". Hence "Black Sessions".
