In Australia, it's pronounced Ee-myoo.

I'm bored too! But I feel compelled to stay up very late drinking, as I have no uni tomorrow, so I can sleep away the tedious day!

I had to read the memoirs or whatever of a psychiatrist full of herself and just gloated throughout the whole thing who had bipolar disorder. She'd get all clinical and I'm like duh, you can get that straight from the dsm. But, the point is that she is a psychiatrist and anyone in the mental health field knows we want to keep it clinical.

She was like I am a manic depressive. I don't like the term bipolar disorder because it is too clinical and doesn't explain what we are.

Uh, last time I checked those with schizophrenia don't have "split minds". I hated this book with a passion and I want the room in my brain back!!

Maybe she gloated because she has bi-polar illness?

My dad is bi-polar/manic depressive, and it's obviously a difficult thing to keep under control once it starts up again. At least when a person stops taking their medications. I'm not trying to speak for you or anything, just that's the way it was with my dad.

Schizophrenia is one of those things which has gotten distorted thanks to pop-culture.

Now I may totally embarrass myself here, but when I was stoned last night I got to thinking about this one show on MTV I saw about these people that 'actually had' multiple personalities...but I don't know know if it was just my drugged brain making up stories.

But are there actually cases where people will have two or more personalities?

Hi There, Am Pam
08-05-2005, 03:16 PM
I was actually thinking of that when I was replying! I'm tellin' ya Maddie, it's the stoned collective unconscious speaking.

Yeah, multiple personality disorder is a seperate issue. More importantly, many theorize that poor quality psychologist create the problem by suggesting that the person has these different personalities. It's sort of like how lawyers might lead the witness or such.

It's currently called DID, or Dissociative Identity Disorder. I've listened to a lecture by someone who was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder. There is a total shift in the mannerisms when the "personalities" take over.

Leela
08-05-2005, 03:26 PM
Oh Yeah! DID! Wow it's amazing what will come back to you sometimes.

Yeah the show I was watching had this woman who had DID and SUPPOSEDLY she had a guy personality and one of her friends fell in love with that personality even though she was straight.

It was bizarre.

I thought DID was different than MPD... as in there really isn't split personalities but a loss of consciousness

Ugh, i wish I had my notes with me cause my memory sucks

Dissociation is a mental process, which produces a lack of connection in a person's thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of identity. During the period of time when a person is dissociating, certain information is not associated with other info

Most clinicians believe that dissociation exists on a continuum of severity. This continuum reflects a wide range of experiences and/or symptoms. At one end are mild dissociative experiences common to most people, such as daydreaming, highway hypnosis, or "getting lost" in a book or movie, all of which involve "losing touch" with conscious awareness of one's immediate surroundings. At the other extreme is complex, chronic dissociation, such as in cases of Dissociative Disorders, which may result in serious impairment or inability to function. Some people with Dissociative Disorders can hold highly responsible jobs, contributing to society in a variety of professions, the arts, and public service -- appearing to function normally to coworkers, neighbors, and others with whom they interact daily.

i found that at some websitehttp://www.sidran.org/didbr.html
