I found out he had diabetes maybe a month ago. Hes been taking medicine for it. Lately though hes been withering away. Today he didn't eat hardly anything and he's shaking when he walks. I want to just take him and drive into the desert and die with him you guys.

Wow, for a long time I've been reading these boards without registering, but I can't not console you about Francis. I'm so sorry--I know what it's like to lose a pet. They're such wonderful companions.
It really hits home that you mention wanting to drive off with him. I remember feeling that way when I lost one of my kitties last year. It's such a helpless feeling. One of my friends pointed out something that really helped me, though--as much as words could, anyway. She reminded me that animals are much more intuitive about our feelings than we think and that that awareness is still a kind of caring and love, even though it isn't as complex or intellectual as human love.
While pets can't really think ahead, I'm pretty sure that my cat would want to know that I was going to be okay, if she could think that far into it. I now think more often about how lucky I was just to have the time with my her that I did--a lot of my hours (yes, I'm that boring) would have been much emptier if I had never had such a good companion. When I got a new kitten this year, I appreciated that fact much more.
I'm sure that Francis would be really happy just to have someone care about him so much, if he could think about it in that way. And I hope you feel better.
P.S. I know this probably isn't the coolest first post ever, but my second will be awesome. Okay, that's setting the bar pretty high. Let's just say that I pledge to eventually improve.
It's Harry!

I'm sorry too, Debby :( Maybe it's something else wrong with him? You should take him to the vet just in case.

I'm very sorry for you and your cat. hope you'll both be well.
do take him to the vet though. no matter what a stingy parents says, a cat's life IS worth saving even if it'll cost a few hundred dollars (speaking from experience)

Thanks so much you guys. That was a cool first post inkblotter, I appreciate it. Good news is hes still hanging in there and I spoke to my vet today and she said obviously the pills didn't do anything, but she has hope that insulin might do the trick. Shes going to order some human insulin that works better for pets than the other stuff and bring it to me tomorrow. He's even eaten and drank a little today, so I'm hoping he just hangs on and the insulin works.
Last night I took a nap on my bedroom floor and i woke up and he was laying next to me with his paw on my hand. :(
here he is yesterday:

He's drinking lots and ate his whole bowl of food today! Today is the first day of insulin, so I'm very hopefull he'll be okay.

I remember sometime last year posting pictures of my white cat, Luke, and arguing that he was cuter than Francis. Of course, all of Blamodom rose against me and I was shushed. Anyway... that cat disappeared long ago--probably picked up by a stranger on one of his wanderings, or maybe just hit by a car. I wasn't nearly as attached to him as I can see you are to Francis.
This isn't exactly the encouraging post I had hoped to make...
What I meant to say is, FRANCIS WINS! ...and I hope he pulls through.
And also... could someone create a thread explaining the background of Cody? I wouldn't want to pollute this thread with talk of another pet.

I hope that your cat pulls through this ok. If he's eating better that is definitely a good sign. One of my cats had cancer and she died really slowly, and got real small like that, but like I said she had cancer. My other cat Buddy is a fat black cat and he's probably almost 20 years old. He has FIV which is like HIV for cats, but he has lived so long that it really hasn't affected him. My other cat Bear has heartworms so we have to give him a pill every night. Sometimes he eats it in a treat, but other times we have to hold him and make him take it. Again like I said I hope that everything gets better for Francis, and I can't wait to see more pics of him as he gets better.

Even though he's much thinner in the recent picture, he looks so much like my kitty. In the earlier one, they could be twins. Aren't orange cats just wonderful?
I'm so glad to hear your good news and am wishing you and Franis well!

Francis looks like my Aunt's fatcat named Really Bad, who also recently got very ill and very thin, but he is now again happily corpulent. :D
everytime i see there are more replies to this thread i get worried that francis might've gotten worse, i know that's pretty sad but eh, i love cats. This one's mine:

I'm so happy to hear this, I almost did a little dance. I'm going to restrict it to this smiley, though. Not because I'm not really happy, but because my dancing is frighteningly bad. More horrifying than this smiley, in fact.
I'm glad for you and Francis!!!

Whew, I am so glad to hear Francis is doing better...he is such a beautiful cat (skinny or fat!) with so much personality  Excuse me for being nerdly, but I've never had an animal with diabetes (apart from myself). How much insulin do you have to give him - like one shot a day? Is it Novolog or Humalog or what? I'd be wanting to test his blood sugar on his toe or something & then he'd scratch the eff out of me :D

He's only on one unit a day of Vetsulin. Its human insulin that used to be available to the public, but now it has to be specially ordered by dr's/vets. When the vet took his blood to test he didn't even flinch! His glucose read 330, which she said was high for a cat , but not horrible. I'm going to borrow a machine from work next week and test it for myself. :-p

Awww..Vetsulin, hehe :D Well good luck with the tester; cats are usually quite good about needles & stuff and Francis sounds like such a wonderful pet that it shouldn't be too bad!

I don't think there's been a time in my 25 year old life when there has been less than two cats in my house. We seem to adopt every stray that takes a shine to us, but of course many strays come with there own past problems of neglectful previous owners or abusive children who like to hurt animals, so we've had to let some be put to sleep to stop their suffering. It never gets any easier even if you've only known them for a short time. We had one cat for 17 years after having her mother for a few years before that. When she passed away a couple of years ago, it was tough for the whole family. But I know we were able to give her a good life in our house. And we can take solice in that fact.
