Do you think you could live in Scotland?
Molly

no, i couldnt go to t in the park. we had gone down to cornwall for awhile, and ended up there longer than we'd expected. which sucks, cause i had a ticket. my cousin had got it for me.
i could definitely live in scotland. its beautiful. i felt very comfortable there.

I'm watching shitloads of movies, going back to school this quarter finally, on vacation this week from work. Went down to see the side of my family that I'm closest to and haven't seen in a million years. Going to go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (tomorrow! Yay!), and the US Air Force Museum some time later this week. Lounging around. Wasting time.
Life is good. :)
PS. Glad you had a great time in Scotland. Europe is pretty awesome. Definitely different. (Did you meet up with any blamovians?)

Been out for 3 years or something. It sucks. But oh well.
I'm gonna focus on social sciences right now, and I intend to narrow it down sometime later once I taste a little of each to find out which I like the most.
I'm looking at a Bachelor's in Economics, History (preferably American, right now) or Sociology.

Boy, this statement is just... yikes.
Wisen up on the realities of the world for goodness sake... One-nation stints -- unilateral action -- will never win a culturally-based war now or any time in the future. I don't care who you are, you won't succeed.
Why do you think I was against some multi-national coalition and was pushing for a UN mandate as a requirement? It's because I realize that it's foolish for one nation to try and finish another government off as long as a significant amount of the society they are attempting to commandeer fervently believes in it, and/or the globe is largely against it.
And I feel as though winning a war like that has nothing to do with the capabilities of an armed force. No armed force can win on its own since industrialization and the rise of a global economic market. Every army is crap now! It's all ideological.
But if you wanna compare on just a practical basis (disregarding the dogma behind it, basing your judgement simply on raw capability), well, I think it's enough to simply say:
If the US armed forces can't do this thing with Iraq, there is no other military in the world that could.
The weakness is in our presidential leadership. The weakness is not the armed forces.

Well, to be more specific, I was alluding to all those with real political ties to the people of Iraq... The nations surrounding it. Those are the ones that would have made a difference.
Not one them were members of the multi-national coalition.
To take that a bit further, though, we really never had a chance to gain them as true allies. If the UN had been involved, a significant amount of the people of those surrounding nations would have considered supporting it a bit more. And you could bet that the people in Iraq would be much more at ease than they ended up being.

Uh, we've not lost a single war.
Not one.
You really need to brush up on your "real facts".
We were winning the war in Vietnam. We devastated their forces during the Tet Offensive. Absolutely devastated. That was their last gasp, and even though they incurred substantial losses and were essentially croppled, the NVA succeeded in their real objective... To make people in America sick of all the casualties enough to think "all right, that's enough dead, it's not worth it no matter how bright the future looks."

Nope. It doesn't matter what spin you put on the politics of the day, America physically (according to the kinetics and legal declarations of modern warfare), lost the war in Vietnam. They could not sustain an army in the country that was capable of being victorious, either through brute numbers OR adequate tactical decisions. They barged in knowing nothing about tropical guerilla warfare and were decimated - this even after Agent Orange and Napalm. They couldn't even define the aims of the war for themselves properly. If it was to defeat communism, it obviously failed in its objective. And basically you tend to lose a war when the opposing army is on its way to the principal occupied city and last stand of your forces and you decide to withdraw. Bye bye. You suck. Besides, the government pulled forces out after ignoring years of anti-war protests. If the government was so affected by what people in America wanted they could have withdrawn years before.
Did America even win the first Gulf War? Saddam Hussein was still in power after invading a foreign country. Some would say that was a failure too, they didn't even grab him for UN trial. It was getting a bit too much of a mess for the Allies again, if I remember correctly.

hey, I was only yanking your chain but I do need to say this:
a) you think the american people and their whingeing decided to make the army pull out of the war? ha ha ha as if america is some sort of democracy!
b) you make it sound like you were winning for many years, this is wrong. In the very beginnings you had the help of British and French forces, that needs to be said. When Britain realised this was nothing to do ending tyranny in vietnam, they pulled out. You will notice that from this point forward american casualties grew subsequently
c) so americans count women and children in their body count now?? laughable. any decent army would be more bothered about killing their enemy, not the enemies wives and kids. You didnt have the skills for jungle warfare, and bombs didnt work, you only killed helpless children etc etc. there were thousands of VC laughing at your troops, as they picked them off unit by unit.

Um, well then...
When you are at war, you have objectives. And when you meet those objectives, you are succeeding.
Now, in direct contradiction of your claims, our objective was totally and blaringly obvious, and I'd believe that a person would have to be purposefully blind to miss it... It's common sense. Our job was to hold the NVA off of the ARVN forces and protect their democracy. We never faltered in this. The borders never changed despite incessent assults from the NVA that lasted over a decade.
We did not invade the North because that wasn't our goal.
Jesus.
And yes, we most certainly left because of anti-war sentiment here at home. Good God, just look at who ran for president, what their stances were, and look who got elected. Nixon promised to end the war through Vietnamization, and he was awarded one of the biggest landslide re-elections in American political history in 1972...

My point is that physically and legally you can not claim to have 'won' the war because the opposing forces successfully invaded and occupied the territories you were protecting (and invaded yourself), which negated the claim to 'never falter' in protecting the democracy of the south. A withdrawal is the same as a surrender, the Americans were just too cocky to call it that. Besides, the political justifications offered at the time for the war referred far more to preventing the spread of communism due to it's perceived threat to Western interests than any noble cause to protect Post-Colonial Asian democracy. Basically America fought a war for itself on the soil of another country. The aim was purely selfish. They couldn't come up with any actual valid justification for doing it because the hard fact is that war benefited no-one, least of all the Vietnamese.
I never said it was the goal to invade the North. It was the goal to protect the South and you willingly surrendered from that goal.
This = you lost. Or at the very least you definately did not 'win'

French forces, you mean. The British returned the area to France soon after WW2 ended, and France tried to re-establish them as a colony, and that's when things got hairy. The French withdrew and we took over citing the "domino effect" of communism that hypothetically could endanger democracy. (Bullshit, I know, but that was the reason. Obviously, I would have been amongst the anti-war crowd for this one because that notion is just retarded and reeks of fabrication and exaggeration.)

What's this about counting innocents? Vietnam's Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs released figures on April 3, 1995, reporting that 1.1 million fighters -- Viet Cong guerrillas and North Vietnamese soldiers were killed between 1954 and 1975.
US counts of ARVN and US soldier deaths stands at 287,232 killed.

After Vietnam the Domino Effect didn't really occur-they did contain communism in South East Asia mostly. The US public thought for example that the Tet Offensive made the war impossible to win because of how it was portrayed in the media, even though it was considered a failure by the Vietcong. The media almost played the role of govt oppostion.

hey vordabois what do you study at college/uni?
1) the 1995 release states that nearly 2 million civilians lost their lives in the North and the South between 1954 and 1975.
2) yeah, that war was seriously fucked up. The similarities of that conflict to this deal with Iraq are striking, but key things keep it different... Mainly, the NVA were at least in part supplied by a behemoth, China, whereas Saddam went it virtually alone. And, the USSR supposedly stayed out of it, but it's pretty much assumed that they used China to funnel their supplies to the NVA. Also, we didn't invade the south and topple their government and create a new one (which is, of course, a huge difference).
In college, for me, I'm doing some sort of social science. I don't know which yet, but it's going to either be history, economics or sociology.

So I have a question for you, cuz I've heard stuff about it in British pop culture but I never quite understood...
How many (major) distinct accents are there in the UK?
I know you have the Scottish and the Irish accent, but I've heard something about a "northern" accent, and it's talked about like it's very pronounced... Is there a southern? Are there others?

Holy shit bruv! We have so many accents you wouldnt believe. It goes far beyond regional variations as people 30 miles away could use completely different grammar, words or phrases as their neighbours. Off the top of my head, here are just a few of the distinct accents I can think of (bearing in mind Britain is smaller than texas).
London aka Cockney. (this even changes depending on what part of london youre from e.g. grania (wasp in a jar - who I imagine to sound a bit like Liz Hurley cos shes posh) from north london would sound far different to Dizzee Rascal (from East London).
Essex/Kent - this is my accent :) Im from the South East of England. closest to londons accent, but we have a few differences. you're most likely to hear "AWWWWITE MAAAIT" (ALRIGHT, MATE) round this area. birthplace of teh "chav" which you may have heard about. (chavscum.co.uk
Scouse i.e. Liverpool accent - The Beatles
Geordie i.e. Newcastle/Sunderland accent - very distinct northern accent. but cant think of any famous people youd know that were
geordies.
Manchester/Leeds accent - another northern one. heard of Oasis? they are from Manchester.
Brummie i.e. Birmingham accent - Midlands of England. An extremely funny accent, which makes the people sound retarded but its all good :) cant think of any famous people you'd know
Welsh accent - Wales is its own country which no american ever realises. They have their own language and their own accent. But they speak English aswell.
General midlands accent - This covers Nottingham and a few other places in the middle of england. pretty standard accent. Daysleeper is from round this way. Theres nothing funny or embarassing about this accent
West Country i.e. Cornwall - the west of country. these people sound like inbreds ha ha. Nah not really they have a lot of farmers and shit and impressions of west country folk usually involve tractors
man that was so boring! Theres a whole lot more but I feel without being able to give you examples of people you'd just be swamped with info!! but yeah the american accent I do now by setting my irish accent up and then shortening the vowel sounds. I bet you, being american, could do a half-convincing irish accent?

Scotland is so beautiful. The whole island is.
It was strange, and maybe you noticed this too, Molly, if you had a window seat on the plane...
When I went to Germany, we flew in this little-r plane from Columbus Int'l to Chicago O'Hare, and then we went in this British Airways 747 from Chicago O'Hare to Heathrow, London. (It was the first time I'd flown in a plane, believe it or not, and I was 17. It was so kick-ass.) Anyways, the whole flying thing was new to me, so when we were going over Indiana to Chicago, I looked out the window and down, and I couldn't believe it... EVERYTHING is freaking square! Like, all of our properties are plotted in these gigantic squares, all perfect-like. Being mostly farmland in Indiana, these squares stood out. Rivers and creeks came and went, but they played basically no part in our boundaries between property at all. It was quite evident that when our country was being settled by Europeans, they purposely set out to keep everything all nice, neat and orderly as far as land management.
And then, after about 10 hours in that plane from Chicago, we made it across the Atlantic, and looking 40,000 feet down, England's coastline appeared.
Damn, I noticed it immediately, the oddest thing... every bit of land I saw was in freaking chaos as far as borders were concerned. Roads went willy-nilly wherever they wanted to, streams defined property lines, and even farmland contained no sense of order whatsoever. It was like this huge jigsaw puzzle.
I dunno, it was just one of my weird observations. Kinda made me realize a bit more how young (and big) our nation is. We could afford to do that, but those folks in England live in a place that was inhabited before land management even became an issue. I think that plays a big part in the land's overall beauty. Ours is so boring... Form following function... just bland.

thats because a lot of their roads were built there after there were already buildings in place. they were building around things. in north america, we built our roads and then our buildings. so we have a grid pattern. actually, glasgow had one of the first grid patterns set up. the main part of downtown is mostly square.
thats part of the reason why i could never drive in britain. theres no way i'd be able to figure out where i was going cause i think the roads are so illogical.

Where I live (and this includes London/Cambridge and Oxford a lot of our roads were first built by the Romans so ya know we have to follow path they took, as buildings blatantly wouldve been built around them.

dude you live in ohio! while the lay out of our towns and cities is usually pretty lame, obviously there's lots of fantastic wilderness. my recent experience driving across the country informs me that everything between the appalachins and the rockies is pretty dismal. however the west coast and parts of the northeast are pretty fantastic. as for places where people live, seattle is one of the most fantasitically beautiful cities in the world, especially for one so young (relative to europe).
i went out to some english down on the west-ish coast once though, and i admit it would be a really awesome place to live.

ok Walter 2 bits of beef with your generalizing
1)Americans don't realize Wales is it's own country and has it's own language? But that they speak English too? Oh really? Lots of Americans aren't as ignorant as others might want to make us seem and I've loved learning about different parts of the world since I was a kid. I knew when I was in Kindergarten that Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland were part of the UK but had their separate identities and histories and don't call them Brits. I know they have their own political parties supporting their countries' rights and Scotland even recently got it's own Parliament. If you like to read, believe it or not it's not hard to get ahold of books in America and learn that kind of stuff. Also I had a globe as a kid, first thing I ever bought with my own money saved up from the tooth fairy and gifts from my Grandma. As far as other languages Scotland used to have it's own form of Gaelic, right? And I know people used to speak Cornish a long time ago too - I think it was in Cornwall and I think that's in the south of England? Am I right? I could look it up, the info is available. There are different languages that used to be spoken here in the south, too. There are still Seminole Indians living here in Florida that can still speak Seminole. Also in some parts of the South Carolina coast the descendants of slaves used to speak Gullah - a creole of old Southern English and African languages. It's dying out but I just saw a cooking show with a woman who speaks Gullah the other day on Food Network and I've sold some of her cookbooks at my store. There was also a kids show called Gullah Gullah island that taught about that culture as well - so the language is dying but many people have a general knowledge that the culture once existed. In Louisiana some people still speak a version of French. Maybe you know those things, maybe you don't.
Yes, some Americans are woefully lacking in the basics but you can't generalize. If there is something that we don't know it just might be for the same reason there are things you might not know about America - you just haven't heard about them. Ignorance to me is not just "not knowing" something...it's not caring that you don't know. And I do care about knowing as much as I can about the rest of the world. So I hate hearing American mentioned as a generalization (Americans don't know this...for example) Ignorant people exist everywhere in every culture - why assume someone is just because of where they are from?
I've actually seen Welsh before in books so I know what it looks like but if I didn't you think I could hang around this messageboard with all you UKers and remain ignorant? Danny and other members like the Manic Street Preachers enough and mention them so constantly that I'd be dumb to not know what Wales it just from the number of times people have talked about that Welsh band.
2) military hicks? There are bad seeds in every group, the Abu Ghraib (sp?) idiodacy was wrong and an embarrasment to many in the military - most of them hold themselves to much higher standards than that. My dad is retired Navy, I used to date a guy in the Navy and they are generally quality nice people who want to do some good. They see it as a way to make a difference and in my mind they haven't recieved the Civillian leadership they deserve from the president - they are trained to do what they're told. Most of them join to defend the country and want to represent the US well, not as "hicks." My ex was from Puerto Rico by the way, and not Puerto Rican American...born and raised on the Island. The military is made up of quite a diverse population. They usually want to be good family people and make a decent living and are generally very respectful types. The disgusting ones are a minority I can assure you - I probably know many more American military people than you do. I just think that was another unfair generalization.

I didn't say I like the preachers btw only that they are mentioned here on Blamo quite a lot. And I think I just showed you the generalization isn't true. It's not that hard to say "most Americans" or "Many Americans" as opposed to "all Americans." And then there's the hick military thing which is also very untrue. I know lots of people do it but stereotypes and assumptions like that just rake my nerves to know end.

I love them. With this newest release, I've spent my last four weeks or so re-reading all of them so I could refresh my memory. That fifth one's a doosy. New movie comes out on November 18th. How old is your son?!
And yeah, J.K. Rowling is freaking RICH! She used to be on the UK's public assistance program, but look at her now... damn.

He's 10. He will read those books for 3 hours at a time!
I might just read them myself, I've seen the movies and they are pretty good.

There are some pretty significant differences. Especially in the third one, Prisoner of Azkaban. The biggest difference, I think, is that they left out the part in the Shrieking Shack where Sirius tells Harry, Hermione and Ron everything about what he saw that night when Lily and James Potter were killed.
I'm eagerly anticipating the fourth movie, because it is, by far, the best book of all in terms of entertainment. There is some mighty promising action because Harry is selected for this thing called the "Tri-Wizard Tournament", the book is based around it.

You've only listened to This is My Truth Tell Me Yours, which sounds nothing remotely like The Holy Bible or Generation Terrorists.
I'll compare you to Danny as long as you keep throwing insults and opinions around without justifying them.

for goodness sakes fab! havent you ever called someone a hippy before! that probably didnt have knee-length hair and was fucked on mescaline? Im taking the michael!
I'm sorry but I really don't think I will like any of the Manics shit 1) Ive heard all of their singles from teh last 10 years (I thought they were okay but its really not my genre) 2) I detest the fat bloke who sings. He looks like a cocky, fat welsh prick and I dont like his voice, even if he can make all the notes. 3) I really didnt like TIMT....
To each his own though man, to each his own. I could name 10 albums that you would rip the shit outta me for liking. Im not going to! But I could you know, dont take shit so seriously.
Oh and you are spiteful to me Fab, why? I dont even know your name! I'm surprised you even have an opinion of me (referring to your earlier post).

I think it's ok to say TMS suck without listening to links Fab provides. I mean, this is the general feeling here: "Not interested. Why not? They suck. Next."
No need for justification.

TIMT is nothing like their good stuff, I wasn't trying to make you like them, but was just trying to prove that they're not dull student rock.
I don't care what you like, I just don't take kindly to you describing one of the most vitriolic and impassioned bands of the 90's as dull student rock.
My name is Frank (my initials are FAB hence the name), I have an opinion of you since you're here an awful lot, whether it's accurate is another story, but it's impossible to say lots of stuff and not have people form an opinon of you, it's human nature.

Your own President didnt even know about Wales! So I'd say my generalisation is fairly fucking grounded. You're retarded beyond belief to think that everything I put is deadly serious. Then again, you are fucking american. No concept of humour unless it features shouting or swear words. Prick!
The Manic Street Preachers, like the majority of Welsh people are fucking sheep-shagging, wax-coat wearing, sisters-fanny-rubbing, stupid-sounding, moaning, wannabee-english bellends. ( ) Thank fuck I have no welsh relatives, I'd probably end it. They're fucking up there with french people for fucking wiping out completely in my book. And arabs. no particular arabs, all of them would do. :-p
sieg fucking heil.
Some ignorant, totally uninformed, drugged out, arrogant little prick like you thinking you're oh so funny in saying something like that to Mary Alice is really quite sad. Mary Alice is one of the nicest and most intelligent people around blamo. If you're threatened by that, just shut up and go cower privately in a corner and retain some semblance of dignity instead of trying desperately and pathetically to prove something (that you don't have and can't prove anyway) by throwing disgusting vitriol at her.
You're acting far more in accordance with the stereotype of 'hick' than anyone on this board from America is.
If you have ANY integrity, you'll apologise to Mary Alice or at least the rest of us for having to read that shit.
I'm not hopeful though.

thanks Lexy. Beofore I responded the first time, he never said anything just at me, I just thought I should point out that in this forum made of people from all over the world maybe those weren't the best things to say. I never expected any apology, I just felt I needed to say what I said.
After that I didn't take anything to seriously, he was just having fun being vitriolic I guess. I really don't need an apology after that either.
Still I appreciate you, and Danny, being supportive. And now we return this thread to it's regularly scheduled programming of Lochs, cliffs, and castles.
