We have 6 warnings that cover 25% of the front of the packet.

SMOKING CAUSES LUNG CANCER
SMOKING IS ADDICTIVE
SMOKING KILLS
SMOKING CAUSES HEART DISEASE
SMOKING WHEN PREGNANT HARMS YOUR BABY
YOUR SMOKING CAN HARM OTHERS

From March 2006 there will be 14 different warnings with graphic images covering front (30%) and back (90%).

WHY DID I JUST LOOK THIS UP. CUBYE

I love how the UK packages say stuff like SMOKING KILLS and SMOKING REDUCES FERTILITY. How blunt.

Britain must be the only country to have this beauty:

Smoking damages sperm and can lead to impotency.

Cheers for that!

isn't it weird how much stuff one warning covers and the other one just lists a vaguely ominous ingredient that cigarettes contain?

You want to order those stickers on the net that match the font and size exactly and say stuff like "Who wants to die old anyway?" and "Smokers are less boring people"

"The best thing is, each packet has a different Surgeon General's warning. Mine say: "Warning! Smoking may cause fetal injury or premature birth". Fuck it, found my brand! Just dont get the ones that say lung cancer on ya know? Shop around! Yeah, give me a carton of low birth-weights. What the fuck do I care?"

For the past few years, Philip Morris has been required to do "public service" by spending a certain amount of their advertising budget on anti-smoking ads. Funny thing is, the crap they make for anti-smoking is so half-ass that it's almost comical. You watch one of those thetruth.com commercials and you pretty much put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye, but those Philip Morris ones are just like "Mikey, don't smoke! It's baaaad for you!"

who the hell funds "the truth" advertisements anyway? is it like a private organization bent on reducing cancer and saving lives by filling smokers with fear and doubt? And where would such an organization get their money? I mean shit, everything that makes money in the U.S. has to cause at least a little cancer and death, it's in our constitution or something.

once, i was with irish john and we saw my friend Nart who is this pretend squatter punk kid, and irish john ripped that warning off his bensons and gave it to Nart because Nart liked it, SIGH.

Kate and i bought a pack in Montreal a long time ago that had some dude with a respiratory mask on or something, and he was attempting to breathe and it was horrific and laughable all at the same time.

These people fund them:

http://www.americanlegacy.org/americanlegacy/skins/alf/home.aspx

"The American Legacy Foundation" was established in March 1999 as a result of the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) between a coalition of attorneys general in 46 states and five U.S. territories and the tobacco industry, and is funded primarily by payments designated by the settlement."

What's the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA)?

"The Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) is an agreement signed in November 1998 by the attorneys general in 46 states and five U.S. territories and the tobacco industry. (It) resolved lawsuits filed by the attorneys general against the tobacco industry and provided funds to the states to compensate them for taxpayer money that was spent on patients and family members with tobacco-related diseases."

Every container of cigarettes and all cigarette publicity material carry warnings that it's hazardous to your health. Just about everyone knows that it's addictive. These are facts that TheTruth.com ads hammer into your skull, but while they wrap themselves in the holy and honorable carcasses of a million tarred up lungs, they represent the scary idea that people are too stupid for their own good.

Right on, I've always felt the anti-smoking/drinking/drug stuff on TV kind of misses the point. I first learned when I was a small child, long before I ever took my first puff/sip/snort of anything; that tobacco, alcohol and drugs are bad for you. It wasn't that I was too stupid to retain that information and understand the meaning of it, it's just that I didn't expect to grow up and realize life sucks so bad that cancer and lung disease seem unimportant compared to curbing boredom and feeding addiction

I planned to start smoking years before I actually did.

God! I remember all that bullshit in, like, fifth grade health class about how you have to TRY to become a smoker because when you start your lungs and your throat are so torn and battered when you begin that it's a monumental effort and it's your body sending you a message and all sorts of nonsense. Ha! My first cigarette was smooth and delicious and a pure joy.

My Dad drives all the way to Belgium to get his baccy! (we live in England) He sells it though heh heh, a pretty decent little bootlegging scam, as each person who goes abroad can bring 3kg of rolling tobacco back with them. He doesnt smoke anymore, but dont tell HM Customs & Excise that.

This is why though: 50g of rolling tobacco costs £3.50 in Belgium, but £9.50 in England!!! What teh fuck that's ALL tax man. And they wonder why people bootleg, motherfuckers.

Herr Lipp
08-03-2005, 05:06 AM
Yeah I think you either become "addicted" to fags or just are bored at certain occasions (waiting for teh bus, at the pub). I am teh latter, my average fag count is only....2 a day. sometimes less. I still end up buying about 20 fags a week though, for joint purposes.

i smoke 2 packs a day and i smoke Djarum Cherry's and they are $5.92 a pack or $52 and some change a carton. They're clove cigarettes and quite lovely, I might add. The store doesn't always have them, cause I'm probably the only person who buys them. When they don't, I go for Camel Reds. $34 carton.

I think it's interesting that alcohol and cigarette companies are the only types of industries (to my knowledge) that have to fund efforts to get people to stop buying their products. How many people are buying these things these days with the thought that it's going to be beneficial or not have any effect on them at all? I personally think it's stupid. If you're going to do this, then you might as well stick similar stickers on fatty foods and things of that nature.

Yeah, I've never really understood it. You mean inhaling smoke with god knows what chemicals is *bad* for me? You don't say, oh wise public service announcement!

I don't think anyone starts using cigarettes, alcohol, or any drug (sans maybe a few crazy pot smokers) thinking it's gonna be the best thing ever for their health. But eating shit food isn't good for your health either, nor is using most hair products, or sitting in front of a computer. Especially shit food... it causes, collectively, more health problems than cigarettes, I'd imagine.

Also, does anyone remember the Truth commercial a couple years back where they decided to get the point across of how dangerous cigarettes are by putting a caged dog in the middle of a public square and having people beat the cage with a pole to piss the dog off? Yeah... that was the moment I started HATING them, and all their commercials (even when cruelty isn't involved) are gimmicky bullshit.

And cigarettes do really make people look cooler.

haha wow. We were actually talking about this the other day, a friend came back from holidaying in the States, and his cigarette packet had some warning about 'Smoking may cause impotence' with a droopy cigarette picture, and it was hilarious.

They're very full on with the anti-smoking crap here these days. We have these graphic ads of people getting cut open and showing the insides of their lungs and stuff.

http://lloydi.com/travel-writing/round-the-world-trip/country/10-singapore/images/cigarette-warnings.jpg

It's fucked up, you go to watch a movie or something, and you get bombarded with this disgusting ad showing some dudes brain getting sliced open or something similar. WTF, I don't smoke anyway, I don't want to see that shit.

My grandmother let us have drags of her cigarette starting at age 10 or so. My grandfather and her started smoking at a ridiculously young age. I remembered loving it, but not digging the menthol taste. I didn't start smoking regularly till 13.

Donatella Versace has these custom-made stickers with her logo on them that she has her staff put over the warning on her packs of cigarettes before they reach her hands.
