One?

Bloody hell...

Male - gaahhh...ughhhh...Larry Olivier - The Entertainer. So many close ones, but Olivier at the very top of his game can only be matched. And this is the top of his game - a hidden jewel.

I feel like I'm been unfair though, as so many could match it.
Another day, it could be George C. Scott in Patton. Olivier himself in Sleuth, Hackman in the Conversation, DeNiro in Raging Bull, Pacino in Godfather: Part II, Kinski in Aguirre, Caine in Get Carter...too hard.

Female - fairly easier. Ingrid Bergman - Autumn Sonata. The meeting of the 2 Bergman's was worth waiting for. Still, ran very close by Marie Falconetti in the Passion of Joan of Arc, and Liv Ullmann, also in Autumn Sonata. Autumn Sonata is one of Ingmar's best because both actresses are at the top of their game, and then some.

I couldn't think of anyone else. Perhaps a better response would have been, "I can't think of anyone."

The day Gwyneth Paltrow comes near a great performance is the day I...well, do something drastic and out of character.

I liked her in Sliding Doors

and I guess Liam Neeson - Schindler's List
Hillary Swank - Boys Don't Cry, even though I know those are boring choices. I haven't seen as many movies as Nick, Ted and Blake for sure.

Whilst I will concur that the rest of her career is unadulaterated tripe, there is one pearl among the faeces; The Royal Tenenbaums.

As to the (horribly difficult) question at hard -

Male: Harry Dean Stanton in Paris, Texas
Female: Giulietta Masina in La Strada

I agree. Not surprisingly, to be good in that role required her to do little more than frown and speak in a monotone, and to look pretty. I think perhaps she found her proper niche.

my female choice was easy:

Maria Falconetti- The Passion of Joan of Arc

i can't really decide on a single male, so for nowe i'm gonna go with:

(drumroll please!!!!!!)

George Walker 'Dubya' Bush- Fahrenheit 9/11

True. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of roles that require an actress to move woodenly and speak like she has a mouth full of cotton wool.
