The Ashes is a cricket series that takes place between Australia and England; MEGA fierce rivalry. It started way back in 1877 (more so 1882). This is the most anticipated series in yearssssssssssssssss

I was just happily remembering the good times heh. I am good, my hair is back but I may shave it again. Saunders was a shame, I hope Casey is good! How are you!?

Back to the cricket. How good was McGrath's spell after tea. 5 wickets for 2 runs from 31 balls.

I despise cricket games like this. The pitch is obviously inadequate if 17 wickets fall in one day. It doesnt give an accurate reflection, it just comes down to luck.

I dont like mega-straight pitches either, but you gotta have something ion a pitch for both batsmen and bowlers. THis hasnt.

Lords groundstaff, shame on you.

I just googled "colemanballs", and this (http://www.gasc10804.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/colemanballs.htm) site had me in stitches

"I've had 14 bookings this season - 8 of which were my fault, but 7 of which were disputable." - Paul Gascoigne

"I always used to put my right boot on first and then, obviously, my right sock." - Barry Venison

"I never make predictions and I never will." - Paul Gascoigne

"I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father" - Greg Norman

"Two Andy Gorams, there's only two Andy Gorams..." - Taunts from the crowd just after he had been diagnosed with mild schizophrenia

"The good news for Nigeria is that they're two-nil down very early in the game" - Kevin Keegan

"He dribbles a lot and the opposition don't like it - you can see it all over their faces" - Ron Atkinson

"Well, either side could win it, or it could be a draw" - Big Ron again

"He's 31 this year - last year he was 30." - David Coleman

Also related to this one - "In a year's time, he's a year older.", from the mind of Bobby Robson.

I wanna see Freddie given the captaincy by 2007 at the latest.

With him and Freddie (both young too) in the side together, England will have the most exciting team around.

Well, Tresco's just out, but he did score 90 - he should still be out there though. Bell's also out quickly. Vaughan seems to be progressing nicely at this moment, but Australia are counter-punching.

I think the BBC is being a bit hasty in saying "advantage England" - especially now we're 5 down.

and heh, they're running a section on bizarre injuries...

Richard Wright:
The Everton keeper fell off a ladder while putting his suitcases in the loft after a summer break in 2003 and damaged his shoulder.

Dave Beasant:
The former England stopper indulged in a bit of fancy footwork to try and control a falling bottle of salad cream. Sadly he managed to rupture ankle ligaments and was ruled out of action for two months.

Steve Morrow:
Tony Adams hoisted his Arsenal team-mate in the air to celebrate their 1993 Littlewood's Cup win. Unfortunately he dropped him, breaking Morrow's shoulder.

Colin Montgomerie:
The Scot pulled out of the Open at Sandwich in 1993 after just seven holes following an incident on the way to breakfast. Montgomerie was amazed it was raining and as he looked to the clouds, he fell over a step, suffering a swollen right wrist and badly bruised knees.

Ian Grieg:
The term accident-prone was invented for this unfortunate cricketer.

The former Sussex and Surrey player broke his ankle after falling from an upstairs window while trying to break into his own house.

Not long after his return to action, he was hit on the finger by a Pakistan bowler and taken to hospital for an X-Ray, which revealed a break. As he got up, he hit his head on the X-Ray machine and needed two stitches. Priceless.

I subscribe to the Guardian newspaper cricket email "the spin", and they predicted a 3-1 Aussie series win, with England finally winning a test that matters, I think its looking spot on.

The real difference in this test was Englands amazing first day of 407 in less than 80 overs. That aggressive batting looks to have won it for them. Im really excited of the prospect of both Freddy and Pietersen next to each other in the line up. With both still young, England could have possibly the most exciting middle order ever for many a year. It would be nice to think their fantastic partnership was a sign of things to come.

Century for Vaughan!

209-2, and things are going pretty well. Australia don't look as brilliant as they normally look, and have missed a couple of opportunities, and England have taken advantage.

And there's still Pietersen and Flintoff to come - a big score surely isn't out of the question.

McGrath just fucked one up. Bell (18 n.o) knocked it to him, and he should have caught it - but he just seemed to flail a hand at it.

I think somewhere in the mid-400's is desirable. Anything above that is fantasy cricket - but it depends on the general form.

Strauss though, disappointed again with a mere 6. Bell does look fairly weak. Vaughan today, has shown the form of 2-3 years ago - a captain's performance, and Tresco played well with 63.

A tie would be awful in this contest. Hopefully we'll skittle them tomorrow.

If we win this test...then at 2-1, you'd have to say it's difficult to see England not winning. If we win the Ashes though, it's such a boost.

A brief note on other sporting events: GO THOMAS, GO!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40687000/jpg/_40687286_bjorn-getty200.jpg

The irritating thing about USPGA on Sky Sports is that I missed Thomas Bjorn's 63. What a score - especially on that course.

And that's all shaping up good for the final day...Mickelson and Love tied at the top, with Bjorn on one behind, and Vijay lurking. It's too late for Woods though in my opinion...he's going to have to do something ungodly to pull this one out from Par. It's not outside the realm of possibility (considering Woods is already one of the greatest of all time), but I wouldn't bet on it.

Just another excellent four days of Golfing action - who on earth needs the Premiership?

i dont think so. All it would take to stop England winning would be the Aussies to win 1 out of 2 and England not to win either. A very highly probable scenario.

The Aussies are still way better than England and this game really should end up a draw anyway.

189-6...it's becoming pretty cagey out there. At this rate, Australia may well get us out, but will they have enough time when they do? If England get to tea, it could well be curtains.

And if that big cloud over the Oval opens up, Australia are finished. Tense, I tells ye!

Herr Lipp
09-12-2005, 09:41 AM
nah fook it blake even if we get bowled out, I reckon the Ozzies will be trying to twat everything for 4 or 6, and so be more likely to take risks i.e. lose wickets. Touch Wood - It's in the bag.

Reginald I. Perrin
09-12-2005, 10:29 AM
We're at tea now. Pietersen has done brilliantly - what a time to get your maiden Test century. About an hour or more after tea I reckon, and we'll have this one whether we bowl them out or not. Anything after that is a bonus - the Australians will be giving the tail-enders the full treatment.
I'm in two minds as to whether we should go for time or score, really. Giles can be good on his day...Hoggard is pretty weak and should perhaps try and just twat it out of the ground. As for Harmison, it depends on him - he can either go out for a duck, or do some business.

The Aussies will certainly be trying to rip it out of the ground, so let's hope our bowlers don't let them. A few rash strokes and it's goodnight Irene...there's still 3 1/2 hours in this game - ruddy hell.

It's a good week in sport overall. This last day of the Ashes, start of the Champions League, World Matchplay Championship - fantastic stuff.

YOU BEAUTY!!!!!

150 for Pietersen. Australia have no hope now - and really, they've pretty much accepted defeat. And Giles is doing superb on 34 - it's a fantastic feeling. The urn is ours, gentlemen.

Every REAL cricket fan wanted as much cricket as possible. Anyone who wanted the weather to intervene just isnt a fan of cricket at all.

I was up at Headingly last night, having a great piss up at the skippers cricketing home.

I only wish Vaughny would have put the Aussies in sooner, and made them sweat.

ha ha what a bell-end. We had to tie a previous test because of the weather you buffoon (which we looked like winning), it would've only been fair. Plus, it didn't matter anyway, we caned them. Oh so you're a 'true-fan' because you read a bunch of second hand journo hack's take on the cricket scene you receive via email   you're so full of yourself.

Its Comin Home, Its Comin, Crickets Coming Home.

*is aware that cricket will fade into the background in ooh about a fortnight*

I love jumping on the sporting bandwagon, the thing is danny, I'm still probably better than you at cricket anyway! Was my schools no. 2 sport behind rugger, I was a high flyer on the B team dontyaknow.

No we didnt. None of the tests were tied. I suggest you learn about the game before you comment.

Considering I won the cup for the U-18's whilst I was only 14, I seriously doubt you are better than me. I even hit the winning boundary off a player who went on to play county cricket for Somerset, and I took 2-2 whilst bowling. Lets compare that with playing for a "B" team, not even the first team.... HAHAHAHA!!

Thanks. You've just attempted to cower away from your error of confusing a "tie" with a "draw", two very different things in cricket, and made me laugh most heartily. Cheers, chav-scum.

Well at least in 2006 the Aussies will probably wipe the floor with the English. Even though before the series began I was going for at least a 4-1 Aussie victory but oh well. Well done England, they have been a considerably smarter team throughout the series. Vaughn is an incredibly talented captain and his fielding organisation is extremely good. Also the English bowlers (and Simon Jones the Welshman) made the most of the conditions and utilised their reverse swing ability to bamboozle the Aussie batsmen. From an Aussie point of view I'm not so sure that Ricky Ponting is quite the captaining force he used to be. Damien Martyn has been extremely poor and Jason Gillespie will be lucky to play another international test. As usual Warney was a pillar of strength and his batting impressed me immensely (If only I could bat with such care-free abandon). Michael Clarke is an emerging talent and should be a talisman in years to come. Glenn McGrath has shown he is definitely not past it and I wouldn't be surprised to see him back at the start of the series in Australia in 2006. The Australian selectors need to do a lot of thinking and consider the places of some of the older players and start bringing in some fringe and ODI players. Roll on next summer, I cannot wait to play cricket again at school.

pretty good summing up. I dont think you will ever see the Aussies making such poor decisions and performing so badly for a while, and England were like a juggernaut. With the Aussies under-performing and the English excelling it evened it out incredibly. The series could easily have gone either way, but yeah, England still have a lot of work to do to catch the Aussies up.

I figured I might as well show some knowledge as to prove i'm not just a bandwagon jumper-onner. Its just like the bloody rugby world cup. For a whole month the whole English population had been lifelong rugby fans, now they don't give two tosses. It'll happen to cricket too. People will forget once they realise that leg spin doesn't work on a frosty pitch. Its a shame so much coverage is given to football and not other sports.

Unless England keep it up, sadly I agree with you.

Glad someone else has got some knowledge here.

All I can say is WHAT A SERIES. Well done to England, it makes the next battle all the more interesting. Wihout Warne we would have been fucked! He took 40/100 wickets and scored more runs than Martyn, Katich or Gilchrist...

Man, we have lost the rugby then the cricket, WHAT NEXT

Its a fact that this happens in all sports. It was like cycling in the last weekend of July. Of course Lance won his 7th successive Tour but how many average people know about all the other races throughout the year. I do count Le Tour as my favourite cycling race but its not the only race I care for. There is an amount of ignorance in this country for other sports. Its fine to support your national team if they win but you haven't earned the right to complain when they lose if you're not a true fan.

Its programmes like bloody Newsround. They go on about David Beckham all the time and only mention other sports when England, only England, are winning. John Craven would never have had any of that nonsense.

Aww come on, let the kidz have their dumbened-down news bullitins. Then they'll start watching five news or something.

But I get yer point entirely. It's hardly even proper news, just showbiz and other unimportant gobshite.

There needs to be stricter regulations on children's TV. Also adverts on TV for fast food and toys should be banned like in Sweden. Kids are becoming more stupid - FACT, kids are becoming fatter - FACT. Its time to end this downward spiral and kick some parent and child ass.
