Which songs would you play at a grand party, when there will be a lot of people with different musical taste! Make a top 10 if you like!

Ramones- Blitzkrieg Bop
Depeche Mode-Enjoy the Silence
Blondie-Heart Of Glass
Bjork-Big Time Sensuality
Dick Dale and his Deltones- Misirlou (from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack)
New Order- Subculture
New Order-Blue Monday
Joy Division- Love will tear us apart
David Bowie-Heroes
Love and Rockets-So Alive

All of them ultramainstream and poppy, but extremely good...and danceable

Knowing what the music at those sorts of parties is like I would not want to be associated with it.

Definitely Born Slippy by Underworld. Also anything by Moby or Chemical Brothers. Nice miscellaneous music.

I don't do parties, so chances are I would just play the same music I like to listen to. That is, anything I damn well please in the first place.

That being said, if I wanted to be a dick I'd play something like... I dunno. Merzbow.

Which sort of party? Because at parties at which I'm getting drunk, I don't much notice what music is being played - I just like the layer of background noise. Whereas if it's a party at which I'm getting coked up, I'm intensely interested in the music, and will want to change it every few minutes, as my whims fly and flail. I don't attend other sorts of parties.

I like you for that.

One time, I made a nice mix cd that had all the music my friend and I liked plus a bunch of silly songs that went with the skanky/sleazy theme of the party. They turned it off and played 50 cent type rap for the rest of the party.

It was AWFUL!!!!!!!!!

A bunch of songs about the finer things in life....drinking, smoking, and women.

Seriously, ain't that what a party is all about?

So, lots of AC/DC!!! The songs are great for drinking/partying, hard riffs and a straight "i don't give a fuck," attitude in the lyrics.

Notorius BIG
Papoose
Cam'ron
Jefferson Airplane
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Baile Funk
MIA
DJ Caffeine
Antibalas
Common

I think might make everyone moderately happy at some point.

Logic being that Baile Funk and MIA are better than typical Raggaeton.
Jefferson Airplane/CCR is better than Metallica or alternative rock.
Notorius BIG/Papoose/Cam'ron is better than 50 Cent.
DJ Caffeine just because it's better than happy techno.
Antibalas and Common because it's better chill out music than Alicia Keys and Dave Matthews.

I like what I've heard of WIRE. REM did a cover of their song Strange and always talk about being fans so someone posted a few of their songs on a messageboard. I guess I haven't heard that much but they seem wierd-good. (then again wouldn't necessarily play it at a party)

anyways...
ummmmm....first stuff that comes to mind...
first 2 Oasis albums (Danny might laugh at this but they always put me in a good mood and I used to play them in my college dorm all the time and made many a convert)
Outkasts' Aquemeni
The Chronic or Doggystyle just for kicks
Beck - like Odelay or Midnite Vultures
The Cars greatest hits
old B-52's like Rock Lobster, My Own Private Idaho, and "my name is Mary Alice and I am a Sagittarius from Jacksonville, Florida, I like cornbread and rock and roll music..." (oh that's not how it goes...sorry)

good call on Mates of State I like that song...Fluke is it called...where there the high falsetto "oooooh oooh ooooh" at the end (followed by "I'm About to Bust"...that song) I played that album at work after the store closed and we were cleaning up (we can't choose the songs when the store is open) and my co-workers said it made them want pot. I don't know I like them but I get the impression that many people would need drugs, and more than just alcohol, to really like it so I probably wouldn't play it at a party.

I thought of another setlist that's more jazzy...like some big band stuff, and some Jazzy rap, and Les Nubians (A french soul group, these two black girls, they are sisters actually, who sing like angels) and some spanish music. That would be a more sophisticated kinda part-ay.

I've also always wanted one day to have a pool party (I don't have a pool and never desired to get one, but my friend once rented out this clubhouse with a pool for her party, so something like that) and play the Breeders' Last Splash, Belly's Star

As someone who both listens to indie and hip hop I would have done the same thing.

Either Public Image Ltd. - Careering or Special AKA - The Boiler (feat. Rhoda Dakar). Surely perfect if you're bored of the party and want everyone to leave.

Wouldn't it be great if you were just DJ'ing at a party, playing nice songs...and then suddenly, you throw in "You Suffer"? Just to keep everyone on their toes.

BWWWOOUUGHHH!!!

I actually picked a lot of the music for last night... Chemical Brothers, Hendrix, Soft Cell, Kanye West, MC Hammer... eh.

Oh, and there was no Napalm Death around, but I did manage to play 'Mike Mahan Has Gingivitis'.

I know what I would play. I completely forgot about it... it has a Devo-ish sound. Anyone listen to Six Finger Satellite? That works good.
