I'm excited.

Roald Dahl was a G, man. He makes books that can be enjoyed by kids and adults, and they're always 'good' if you know what I mean. They may have some peril scenes, but you know ultimately they have a good message. James & The Giant Peach, Matilda, The Twits all legendary.

Depp has the Midas touch anyway in my opinion. I thought Finding Neverland was good too.

Loved the book, loved the movie. Was pissed at the announcement of remaking it.

BUT...I am a fan of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp.

At first glance I thought it would flop, but the more I see of it, the better it's looking.

rain of the hours: whats the point in slating a movie, and giving no reasons for doing so! thats just silly, particularly when Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is one of teh best kids books ever written, it has a sterling cast (new Charlie looks adorable, he's got pinchable cheeks :) ) and they've made the magical mystery boat scene even more trippy!

I heard Burton is going to make this very dark. So I'm very, very interested.

I hope they do a good job too...I loved the book and loved the original movie, will be hard to imagine anyone but Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. But I'll keep an open mind, I like Tim Burton and Johnny Depp as well.

Roald Dahl was one of my favorite authors as a kid, cool you mentioned Matilda, Fraser...that was probably my favorite book from childhood, besides Charlotte's Web. The movie Matilda was a horrible piece of crap though, totally uninspired compared to the book :(

I just hope Burton doesn't fuck it up like he did Planet of the Apes.

p.s. I'm excited though

i am not excited at all and don't plan on seeing it. i was pumped. tim burton sounded awesome, since he kicks ass at visuals. johnny depp sounded awesome, since he kicks ass at acting. then i saw the trailer.

oompa-loompas that look like they just dropped some X and came out of a dance club are not appealing to me.

i'm not excited about depp's take on the role of willy wonka. gene wilder kicked ass as wonka, johnny depp looks like a cross-dresser, has a horrible "accent" (if you will), and is simply dressed like a retard. whats with the hair?

huge dissapointment.

It's a remake man it's gotta be a bit different. I think the message is going to be different in this one, and I've already said it's confirmed 'dark'. Either way, with a decent cast, crew and story, I wouldn't be so dumb as to write it off before you seen it, cleetus.

Barbara: Yeah Dahl and..Enid Blyton made good books that I read before moving on to Point Horror *shits pants* :O! I think James & The Giant Peach was my favourite! Fucked up story :)

Original = overrated as shit, Dahl had legitimate reasons for hating it.

New = looks more loyal to the book. Thus, it should prove more enjoyable.

Correct, sir. Prime example: it's kept the proper title.

dufer that's retarded. Im going to watch Madagascar at the weekend man, kids films are jokes! :) Of course they are made for adults aswell, not many 8 year olds hold down 9-5s so they can drive to the cinema and pay for their tickets and stuff...kapeesh?

...I love Burton and Depp...but this movie ended up being cold and awkward. At times I felt like it was a chore to sit through.

I'm definately not used to being tempted to imagine what it would be like to ravish Willy Wonka though...it would kind of do my head in.

What a waste of 117 minutes.

I want my £12.60 back, bastards.

Johnny Depp was frightening and unfit for the role. And what's with the dentist sub-story? What a load of shit.

I liked it. I think the problem a lot of people had was they compared it to the first movie, when it really needs to stand on it's own.

Did you know Dahl hated the first one? True story.

And I liked Depp. I thought he was funny.

vordabois

I thought it was pleasantly original. Gets an A-.

It was kind of disturbing, really, but it wasn't overtly dark like the first one. After all, Dahl's books are indeed disturbing, but not dark, so I thought it fit much better. Maybe it's because in this one, it wasn't overdone to the point where it becomes something you're conscious of... It was much more engaging and fun.

Depp was amazing. The squirrel scene... By far, one of the funniest things I've seen in a while.

The best joke was at the end, though. Even my dad, the guy who's quite a movie aficionado (whose taste I admire greatly because he really knows his stuff, old movies and new) laughed out loud at the part where his father was like:

"After all these years...

...

...and you haven't flossed!"

...and you'd think it amazing because if you knew my dad, you'd know he rarely laughs at stuff like that.

PERFECT Roald Dahl joke. Candy man. Estranged dentist father. Totally creeped up expertly stealthy. Impeccable!

Oh, and that Freddie Highmore kid... Holy crap, I went and watched "Finding Neverland" after "Charlie"... WATCH THAT MOVIE! He's a great actor for how young he is. He even won Best Young Actor for the Broadcast Film Critics Association and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the Screen Actors Guild in 2004 for it. "Finding Neverland" is a real tear-jerker, though (I got a little weepy-eyed, myself), but he was amazing in it, through and through.

Finally saw the new one tonight, and I must say, I enjoyed it through and through. Depp was great, Highmore was excellent, and overall it was just a damn fun movie.

What were Dahl's reasons for hating the first one?

Herr Lipp
08-08-2005, 04:40 AM
One reason was definitely that in the first one, Charlie was naughty and stole some fizzy-bubbles. In Dahls version, Charlie is pure innocence.

I saw this film and thought it was good  though it didnt fill me with childish glee, I think I was expecting too much. Also i loved the old Oomap Loompah tunes (what do you get if you guzzle down sweets? eating as much as an elephant eats) and now theyre a bit crappy and different per scene. Kids new to it would still love it Im sure. Not as dark as I first thought it would be

Another reason could possibly be that, in the original, Willy Wonka was transformed into a father figure, whereas in the book he's really just a funny little man, much like Depp's interpretation.

It wasn't a cinematic masterpiece but it was definitely entertaining. It made me laugh a lot too. Also, i saw it on the IMAX screen so I got the whole "IMAX EXPERIENCE".

I also saw it on the IMAX screen. I like the first version, but I always fast forward through the songs (especially the mother song) except for the oompah loompahs. I enjoyed this one more I think.

my sister saw the credits and was like oooh the author wrote the lyrics for the movie:rolleyes: my nephew had to explain to her about the book

the second book is really weird

I imagine the money-men pulled rank on him on numerous occasions. he wanted spike milligan to play willy wonka! that would have been awesome, even though gene wilder was great.

I thought it looked really promising in the beginning, but after Augustus left it all went downhill. And I hated how poppy they made the oompa loompa songs. The movie gave me a headache. I knew it'd be different from the original, and I didn't have high expectations, but I thought it'd be different from that. It's really rare I completely hate a movie, too.
