View Full Version : Every movie is STILL a metaphor for McCarthyism.

After watching "Land Of The Dead" today, which was really only missing a shot of zombies picking up a hammer and a sickle during that montage where they learn how to use tools, I have been inspired to have another go at this.
So yeah, post the name of a film and I will try to explain why said film is really a big metaphor for McCarthyism, until I get stuck/bored/banned.
Alright..... Go!

P.S. If you post the name of a film I haven't seen, you are a communist.

The Titanic is a potent symbol of the exploitation of the workers (IE Dock workers in Liverpool) for the benefit of the bourgeoisie, and we all know how that ended up. The metaphor is also played out on a smaller scale with the working-class guy who has sex with the upper-class girl inside a car, the very symbol of industrialisation, and then dies horribly. Sorry if I spoiled the end for anyone there.

It involves the intensive study of Mannequin and Weekend at Bernie's.

Mannequin involves an artist who falls in love with a "working class stiff" who becomes alive when she frees herself from the bounds of oppressive factory owners. The factories produce human symbolism of people who are all the same, and represents the mentality of the bourgeoisie. It is the artist who can see past the capitalistic boundaries set on the workers, or the Mannequin, if you will.
Weekend At Berines's... too simple. Bernie, a rich, yuppie piece of scum, is dead. Down with whitey. Ironically, all his "friends" and business partners are too naive to tell the difference between dead Bernie, and the materialistic Bernie which is alive only in the technical sense that he had a pulse. The two young chaps have to fake the fact that Bernie is alive, which represents the presentation of the self in the business world – never let onto the fact that deep down, you are a cold, heartless, rotting stiff who sees people as dollar signs.
I'm not sure I really captured what Mark was going for, but oh well. BTW, I concur, great thread.

from somethingawful....
The ghosts represent the proletariat, while pac-man represents the bourgeois. The ghosts have within them the power to overthrow the ruling class, but only if they coordinate their efforts; pac-man is weaker than he seems, and is able to supress the working class only by exploiting the ample resources at his disposal (power pellets). The monument is a call to arms for the oppressed members of the working class; if we coordinate our efforts, we can form a utopian society through bloody insurrection.
um. I dunno. how about You Got Served (it is your favourite film after all) or Dumb and Dumber, or Bean: The Movie?

Oh crap, my computer shits out on me for a few days, and the thread takes off. Oh man. Okay I'll have to just try to busk it...
Dream A Little Dream - I'm only going by a plot summary here, but.... you've got an old guy and a younger guy who swap brains, so perhaps this is about the interchangable ideologies of the older, Marxist form of working class liberation, and it's more sinister Stalinist reinvention. Dun dun duuuuuuuun.
School Of Rock - This is about dangerous subversion infiltrating the impressionable minds of the nation's youth. The product is a school 'band' that seems to share all power equally, although in true Orwellian tradition, some are more equal than others. (Jack Black) :O
Pulp Fiction - The object in the briefcase is the state. Ving Rhames is it's political ideology (the shepherd, if you will), and John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson are agents of the state. Bruce Willis is the workers. Ving Rhames is eventually buggered by a policeman until Bruce Willis saves him and kills John Travolta. Then a European tries to steal the briefcase until Samuel L. Jackson sees him off. A powerful pro-McCarthyist statement.

I'll have to come back for the rest a bit later. Mainly because I read the plot summary for You Got Served three times and I still don't understand it.

I think the problem here is that you're using the wrong term. Every movie is NOT about McCarthyism, ut in fact about class struggle. AKA - Communism. To say that it's a about McCarthyism is like saying "A Bug's Life" is about pest control. McCarthyism denotes paranoia and persecutuion. While most of the movies you mentioned are not about persecutuion (of those with wakened ideals) but rather exploitation (which deals with the awakening or ignorance of those same ideals).

Dude. I totally forgot this thread was even here. I'm so behind.
Bean - This piece concerns the devaluation (in monetary terms, as cultural merit is subjective) of art in a capitalist society. A highly specialised text, perhaps not suited for beginners.
Nightmare Before Christmas - A movie filmed entirely in "stop motion" - perhaps a subtle call for the cessation of a "certain movement." The message is the medium in this case.
Rocky IV - Is that the movie where that pretty much consists entirely of the guy who played Rambo punching a Russian man? I actually have no idea about this one. :O Actually, the Russian guy kills Apollo Creed, so maybe it's about the space race or something.
Driving Miss Daisy - Stars Dan Aykroyd. Also has a character named "Red" and another called "McClatchey."
I'll have to come back for the rest later, my brain hurts. :(
