I haven't read anything by him so I'm not sure,
but isn't it Palahniuk?
he seems to be really hip to read these days... *cough*

It is Palahniuk.
... and I haven't read Fight Club, but I know I enjoyed the shit out of Invisible Monsters... maybe there's just something wrong with me.

...but just make sure you don't call it literary, when it patently is not. That's my great fucking bugaboo. Especially in the case of Palahniuk, whose command of language is almost impressively lacking. God - it's SO FUCKING AGGRAVATING that he's taken seriously.

You're quite the pretentious asshole aren't you, Ted?
And for the record, I've never read anything by Palahniuk, just so you know my outburst wasn't caused by anger at your insulting of him, just of your general hatred of any literary work that isn't considered "intellectual." I think you are afraid of being seen as dumb, and therefor feel the need to compensate by constantly trying to sound smart. Good luck with that, by the way.

I think you should know what you're talking about before you start spouting off. I have no use for "intellectual" fiction - all I ask for is originality and style. When you open up a book and its first sentence can't be parsed, there's a problem - as was my experience with Palahniuk. Anyway, go fuck yourself and stuff.

Aye aye, Captain! As I said, I've never read anything by the guy, so I do know nothing about that, but it just seems as if you're always criticizing in order to sound more intellectual. But then again, what the fuck do I know? I also fall into the category of people who constantly fear that others will find them to sound stupid. So maybe I was compensating by being critical of you.
Um, the point of this is, I felt the need to spout off for once, and I'll go fuck my self sweetly now. :-p

Well, I just dislike being insulted. Anyway, I tend to get more agitated over things I don't like than things I do. I'll let you slide just this once.

I thoroughly enjoy Palahniuk books. I've read Invisible Monster, Survivor, Fight Club, Lullaby, Stranger Than Fiction and some other one whose title i can't remember. Literary or not, I still enjoy his books :)

Have we sunk so low that grammatical fiction is now considered "intellectual"?

Fight Club is the only film I can think of which adds to and outdoes the book. That's not to say I don't enjoy Palahniuk's writing though, cos I do. I don't think FC is his best book however, it seems a little underdeveloped. I agree that he is pretty much a one-trick pony with his stories and writing style all coming off very similar, but he has some really great and original ideas for stories that can be especially powerful. I think his disjointed "non-literary" style of writing only helps to evoke the modern, "non-literary" characters he is representing. He always writes in first-person after all doesn't he?

The ridicule was for Chuck Palahniuk's grammatical ineptitude, pal.

But is it not just a style he uses to evoke the characters more accurately? I would argue that Tyler Durden wouldn't talk or think like Heathcliff, so why should the writing be in a more accepted or classical style?

I like his name - Studs Terkel. It rolls nicely off the tongue: "Studs Terkel." It's especially fine if said in a dramatic voice. "Studs Terkel."

I don't mean to sound naive, but by parse you mean if it has all the correct combination of verbs, nouns, and conjuctives?

My gripe with the movie was I found the dangerous interplay between two characters far more interesting than having it resolve ONCE AGAIN into fucking multiple personality disorder!
Fuck that, it's the most lame plot device ever.

If you had been alive at the time, would you have called Monet inept because he couldn't color within the lines?
In all fairness, I haven't finished Survivor yet, and I haven't read any other books by the author, but I do really enjoy the detail in the writing. Hell, I learned how to eat lobster and clean bloodstains the last time I picked up the book.
Also, Bob Dylan can't sing that well.

I love the stuff like that in Palahniuk's writing, you get the feeling he does some good research into some really random things to flesh out his characters and their occupations.

Palooanuknuk's lack of ability is more akin to Monet being incapable of unfurling a canvas without tearing it, or of dipping a brush in paint without it snapping in his hands. Also, Monet would have to be making paintings for magazine covers and aftershave billboards.
It's a specious comparison, anyway.

Every book that guy writes seems like the literary counterpart to a painting of two blue dots called "Two Blue Dots". And then you say, "My little brother could write that, if only he knew how to swear" and somebody gets angry at you for not being progressive enough.
